I know, I just mean as a general focus of the company. They're trying to make Halo nuevo Star Wars, which I'm fine with but not at the expense of the core aspect of the franchise. How much better would the MCC be if they put in even half the budget of Nightfall into it starting a year ago?
Great point. Could even go further and say that if the entirety of 343 worked on MCC and that alone, would it be in the state it's in?

Do they even make games? Every project they've released has had large portions outsourced.

Make a fucking working game first then expand the universe.

You mean, "Why are people who want to play Halo 3 playing the TS playlist when there is literally a playlist devoted to Halo 3?" Right?

I played it for one match, and the FOV is so bad it literally makes me dizzy. That's not even mentioning the terrible gameplay.

I would rather play PP starts Halo CE than a game of Halo 3.

No, what's fucking lame is that CE players don't have a playlist so we're forced into the TS playlist, and then people vote for Halo 3, despite there being a dedicated Halo 3 playlist.

My man.

I have just given up getting a CE match until the playlist is out.

Publishers need to delay when games aren't finished and spread games over the year. Halo has always been November but who cares really. Go for quiet domination in Jan-March while giving a teaser slice of the action in Nov-Dec. Let COD, BF, AC do their thing and hit when the iron is bored a few months later giving you a long tail to your game rather than being dropped for those 3rd party titles soon after launch.

More AAA games need to be released during the summer. Seriously, summer is always a dry spell for big titles and tons of people have time off. It's like a fucking breeding ground for a huge online shooter to take off from and yet nobody uses it. Hell, Mario Kart 8 launched during this window and sold pretty damn well despite fucking nobody having a Wii-U. Halo would sell like crazy with a June or July release.

There are ton of maps I'd want in a free "we're really sorry we fucked this up" map pack, but I would hope they would add in another forge canvas as well. One that doesn't use the crappy concrete palette that I'm already tired of looking at (and I don't even have the game yet.)

It really wouldn't. To maximise sales the holiday season is just when to release. You get your core fanbase (us) picking up the game. While also parents and other people not as invested in the game picking it up as presents etc.

Most retailers live year round waiting for the Christmas season. Massive, massive amounts of money is spent at that time.

Question for you guys;

How long did it take to download MCC?

I'm at 11 hours and only around 60%.

Including the patch, not even 2 hours.

I can't remember where I saw this from but I swear this was actually Myth-Busted by some site actually. The November/December holiday rush season only benefits the biggest of franchises and anything below that tends to get lost in the shuffle and undersells as a result (Dead Space, Mirrors Edge, Rayman, etc). Sadly, Halo might be falling out of that "prime" zone. The holiday November rush is really kind of an overrated season.

Edit - Obvious disclaimer, I could be very wrong

Had a fun 3v3 Halo 3 match that ended up being pretty close.

Then got into a 5v4 Halo 2 match on midship. I was on the team of four. One of our guys was afk. Another guy quit.

2v5 sucks ass.

They nailed the Halo 2 Anniversary BR it feels so good. Just copy and paste for Halo 5 please thanks.

I almost can forget about the game's problems solely because of this. Feels nearly perfect to me, and pretty much why I've been trying to get into H2A in MM more often than other games thus far.

Dunno who to blame for QA and MCC being a buggy mess.

But as far as the super dumb playlist gametype/map combos im gonna go ahead and #BlameTashi

I honestly prefer no voting. Provided playlist gametypes and maps aren't awful.

I'd go with one of two options

1) No voting system at all - You play what you're told to play. No veto system, nothing. This is pretty much what Halo 2 used, isn't it? I liked this system.

2) The Mario Kart 8 system. Everybody picks one of three choices. The more people who vote for one option, the higher its probability of being picked is. However if only one person picks a different map & gametype, there's still a slim chance that game type might get picked. After all picks are in the game randomly chooses what you'll play based on the weighted odds.

A system without voting or veto would be crap because....

......................................

.......we still have SMG/AR + motion tracker starts in 2014. What we need is a better way to manage ties or a change to the voting system in general. MK8 gets brought up a lot and rightfully so; it works well.

JIP quit culture has ruined the games I actually get into. Every time we go down by more than like 5 points my whole team quits.

They've been conditioned by the likes of CoD and Battlefield that quitting is inconsequential and they assume they'll just be replaced. Fuck modern FPS.

People have been doing this since long before any "CoD conditioning."

People are just selfish dicks is all. They don't need conditioning to not give a fuck. Happened in Halo 2 all the time.

They at the very least need to do something other than "the one furthest to the left wins" in the event of a tie.

and if you vote for Lockout/Blackout/Lockdown more than 3 times in a row you get a 24 hour ban from Xbox Live

Yep. In one bomb assault in Halo 2 if you lost your first defense you could pretty much guarantee someone would quit from your team.

Heh, I've reverted back to blaming bungie whenever something dumb happens in game. Classic halo.

My friends have a saying that carries across ANY game that's having issues:

"What is this shit!?! I'm about to call Bungie and cancel my subscription!!!"

Slayer Pro has radar.
The spirit of shishka haunts us to this day.

Yet another thing that should've been added since Halo 2: a mercy rule.

If a team scores 2 bombs and you don't score 1, it should not go to a 4th round. It's been shown time and time again that people quit this round and just generally feel demoralized, so why put the kiddies through it? Halo games aim for you, but they put you through the shame of a final round to waste 5 minutes getting stomped on.

I don't even remember MK8's system, but hiw can you apply a system that has one mode (racing) to something as varied as Halo MP?

I don't understand why people seem more concerned with who to blame than the actual problem at hand.

I don't care who is definitively to blame. All I know is that 343 is the developer and the figurehead and most importantly, the one handling complaints. They're the ones with their name on the box. So they're the ones who will get my shit. I'm much more concerned with my complaints being answered than who to blame those complaints on.

If higher powers forced this upon them then they have my sympathies, but that doesnt mean shit now that it's their responsibility/release. If shit goes down in my department at work then responsibility falls to me whether it was my fault or not (it often isn't).

People elsewhere are getting really angry with me for this opinion.

Pretty easily. Just like MCC already has, you get three choices.

1) BRs on Warlord - H2A
2) BTB CTF on Blood Gulch - HCE
3) Team Slayer on Turf - H2C

Everyone in the game picks one of the three. And then the game uses a weighted random selection to pick one of those three based on what everyone voted. So if 10 people choose option 2, that has the highest chance of being picked. If 2 people choose option 1, it still has a chance but a slim one. If nobody votes for choice 3, it wont get selected.

I look at it the same way I would if my HOA hired a contractor to do a job on the property and the job didn't get done. While it wasn't my HOA that fucked up, the responsibility falls on them to fix it.

And you could argue that the HOA did fuck up by hiring an incompetent contractor or didn't stay on top of the contractor to make sure the job got done.

Halo has varied playlists whereas Mario Kart 8 does not. So in Team Slayer, you'd have the options to vote for and it would do the MK8 jingle. It simply chooses at random one of the votes, so if 3 people vote for CE out of 8, it has a 3 in 8 chance of being picked. Example.

At this point it's clearly a design choice, but I think it's seriously unfair how the tie goes to the first map.

lol, back in the Halo 3 era whenever something went bad in a video game or something bad happened to you we called it getting Bungie'd

Bungie recieved their share of salt back in the day :p

Agreed. I'm just bothered by the fact that if anyone says anything negative about 343 then a whole brigade of people pop out defending them as the poor little puppy abused by its Microsoft overlord and I should feel ashamed of myself.

Assumptions are flying all around. The fact is that no, we don't know what Microsoft mandated. All those abuse stories, while likely, are still absolutely bullshit guessing at this point. But what we do know for a fact is that 343 is the developer with their name plastered all over this product.

I feel for them if bad stuff went down behind the scenes, but I've got a lot of shit to give about this "release" and they're the ones who will have to receive it because it's their job.

From the gaming side:

Ehh, I talked to Xbox support about a refund and they told me that 343 has a patch planned for today and tomorrow and that they "couldn't" issue a refund while the issue is being resolved. I saved the convo and will be calling tomorrow again

I really doubt Xbox support knows anyting about any patch. geez

Couldn't help but laugh and feel bad for 343i guys when I saw the "downloading latest data" prompt, right after the patch.

MM seems okay now to me, but I don't spend much time on multiplayer. It puts me in games at least.

Not sure what budget has to do with it, though. You're assuming that money was the bottleneck, when we don't have any proof of that, AFAIK. Could be they gave everyone all the money they need and they produced poor results regardless, a la Colonial Marines.

What? Budgets always have something to do with it, they're a business. With a bigger budget, they could have hired more software engineers earlier and fixed these problems during development rather than post-release.

That being said, and Colonial Marines is an example of this, you also need to make sure that the money being spent is being spent well, especially if you are contracting out the work to a different company.

Do they even make games? Every project they've released has had large portions outsourced.

I mean, I'm pretty sure they did almost all of the Halo 4 campaign, and Spartan Ops, and Halo 5 (which it sounds like has much more if not all of the multiplayer in-house now). Outsourcing isn't unique to 343i at all but I think MCC is way above the usual amount for AAA (correct me if I'm wrong).

I think they probably though eh, this project is relatively easy, we can just let all these other studios work on it so we can concentrate internally on Halo 5.

And you can also select a 4th "?" Choice which will pick any of the other 37 tracks in the game, sort of like a veto, which no-one knows of until it gets selected.

Seriously, I been praising Nintendo a lot here lately and in life, but that is because many of their choices make sense, especially Mario Kart's 8 Online Picking, Communities and being able to set your own rules with the community (no Ar Starts? What a dream) and the way they handled DLC (let players decide whether they want to search for the original 32 or all 40 tracks available so far).

Any US people know how Smash U handles map choice?

You could vote between blaming Saber Interactive, Ruffian Games, or United Front Games.

Or you could veto blaming 343 and just blame Microsoft.

Or you could simply blame Bungie.

Definitely UFG. Interface is all kinds of broken, but within-game things tend to work okay (after the games themselves launch). I can't say for certain how much the "interface" actually handles stuff like MM and save games, but as far as I can read into it, it does quite a bit if not all.

I hate to point fingers, but I definitely think a majority of the problems with MCC stem from how XBL networking interacts with the UI. Not to dig at UFG, but in my mind the UI is something 343 DEFINITELY should've been the ones working on in-house. Even if there were issues like this launch, at least they have a full record of work done on that UI and how to repair it. Right now, aren't they essentially trying to fix someone else's (UFG's) work?
