Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin announced for PS4/XBO/PC - April 2015

If they really wanted to be cool, they would have held off for a while, remastered Dark Souls 1 too (I know that Demon's is a bit off limits 'cause of Sony), and shot for 60fps. As it stands, remasters like these just aren't very enticing anymore.

Fantastic. I haven't played either Dark Souls game, so I'll play DS1 on Steam when it migrates and DS2 on PS4. And then BLOODBORNE

Yep. Exactly this.

Seriously, this can get bent. It's silly. The ONLY worthwhile option was a complete remastered 'Souls Collection'. A remaster of the weakest game in the series that's still fresh in a lot of players' minds just after Bloodborne drops?

Whyeth?

Can't do a souls collection because Sony owns Demon's souls. Remaking DaS would be a huge undertaking.

Glad I waited. Now lets see if we get the lighting effects we were shown the first time DS2 was presented. However, I feel Bamco is still going to cheap out on it.

Bloodborne is supposed to be more action oriented and less RPG like right? Can you even create or customize your character to the degree you can in Souls like choosing classes and whatnot? Just asking because it seems like Bloodborne is a different type of game with a similar fighting system, but I haven't kept up much.

From Miyazaki

You can also select a female character as the heroine, and there’s facial customization. Personally, I think not only with RPGs, but even with Tactical RPGs, character customization is one of the most fun aspects.

It's faster paced, but it's still an RPG.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Well, I'm in for the PS4 version. I didn't play Dark Souls 2, so I'm curious to check it out. Though I imagine it'll be a little tough to go back to after Bloodborne hits. I might be FROM-ed out at that point.

Hahaha!

Good thing I haven't bought the game yet. Now I can enjoy it with updated visuals, just like it was supposed to be. And all DLC is also included.

Yeah, that sucks. I would rather they didn't release graphical upgrades if it means segmenting the playerbase. It's already hard enough to get summons...

This is the worst part of it all.

There really is no reason for doing this on PC. Everyone should just get that graphical update and bump in online players numbers. If there is more story content then charge us a DLC price. I really hope they don't try to charge existing owners full price for this.

I bought the PC version Day One. This new version is a real kick in the teeth for people in my situation.

Never played the DLC. Should I just get it now or wait for this to drop?

Now I win, because I didn't waste money on an inferior product. I waited and demanded more and I won :D

Actually you don't win! Nobody wins!

From the trailer/screenshots, it doesn't look like this matches up to the original "vision" for the game. Environmental complexity was reduced, and the original lighting was removed and shows no signs of returning. Sure, you might get a couple of new effects but don't expect it to look like the TGS trailer.

What pisses me off more is how this move will essentially force a divide in the PC user base. In a game that shines thanks to the online stuff it's an incredibly stupid decision.

Is it written somewhere that DX11 version people will be on their own? Both versions will have the exact same content... the only difference will be the graphics. I don't see why they'd need to split the community.

I LOVED Dark Souls but skipped Dark Souls 2. Is DS2 a worthy sequel?

Like others have said, the DLC (which is included in this) is really, really well done, and reminiscent of the first game. And even barring the main game's faults, the game is utterly packed with content. I would also argue that the main game has some standout parts in comparison to previous entries, and that fans are waaaaaaay to apt to forget DkS1's faults. A simple example that I particularly like is that DkS2 finally made sorcery not the go-to easy mode as it was in DeS and DkS1. Bosses finally have good resistances, and because stats are defined differently and rings are less game changing, magic users actually have interesting risk/rewards. User accessibility is improved for the most part too, although the white sign soapstone is mysteriously more cryptic to acquire, for some reason.

DkS2's main issue is that it often feels less immense and complex than DkS1 in its world design, and its narrative is excessively convoluted. Whereas a playthrough through DkS1 excluding any youtube lore videos would still leave you the ability to make rich interpretations about the game's ending, DkS2's "piecing the parts" through rare and/or extremely rare item drops is frustrating and not particularly satisfying, since many of the game's themes feel half-assed compared to its predecessor.

PvP is a mixed issue; on one hand it plays with greater variety, but on the other hand it's inherently limited by a mechanic that determines matchmaking. This might be something they'll attempt to fix in this version, though.

I don't think we have actually seen what the next-gen version will look like yet, but that's why I said earlier I'm waiting for confirmation.

There are two versions now, DX11 version and DX9 version, and the video barely looked special at all. If that's the way it looks, I'll skip it altogether.

Also just because they scrapped an old version doesn't mean it's gone. It's very possible they saved all that extensive work they did and will re-implement it into a version that can actually work on new systems. I'm not sure why people think scrapping the version necessarily means they threw it in the trash or something :p

DX11 will allow the summoning of 5 phantoms rather than 2. Thats why they will have to be split.

I'd say go ahead and get the DLC. Seems better liked than the base game.

Oh, I was under the impression the video was from the next-gen version.

The additional summons is part of the 1.1 patch, which all versions get. That has nothing to do with DirectX...

While it won't include the enhanced graphics and sound, those versions (and gamers who already own Dark Souls II) will receive the additional content through a free, "large-scale update (ver. 1.10), which will add new features including an additional NPC to seek out along the treacherous quest through Drangleic as well as expanded story, in-game events, improved balance, and online matchmaking functionality."

Okay, so it's not really like the rest of the DLC but a revision of the current game with new enemies and items? Okay, I'll take it. I just hope they fix:

Bad hitboxes
Delay-based netcode
and some wonky enemies (like those Grave Wardens in the poison palace).

It does say it. DX11 is the onoly version to get 6 player online.

gamestop

That doesn't explicitly say that the 6 player thing is "DX11-exclusive." It's poorly worded at best. I'd be extremely surprised if the 6 player online wasn't part of the 1.10 patch and instead an exclusive thing. That would make absolutely no sense.

Bet it was. Godrays looked different than what I remember. Lighting as flat as ever. Mark my words.

I'm not sure! If that is the next-gen version it's completely fucking LOL, so I'll skip it too :p

Yeah, I was thinking godrays were different and there are glimpses of new content as well right?

Basically, I think what you see in the trailer is what you're going to get. Go back and watch the TGS trailer and weep for what could have been. At least most developers aren't bothering with cross-gen derpery anymore.

To be fair I never envisioned myself playing DSII again after Bloodborne's release so my opinion of this announcement really has no further bearing on my desire to play it.

DS2 is easily my GOTY, this is awesome news and I'll be there day one.

The timing's a little tight with Bloodborne though.

I had planned to go back and finish all the DLC at some point but a shiny PS4 version is just the ticket. I think I'm just about ready to retire my 360 - DS2 DLC was going to be its last gasp.

I'm glad I waited. The you lied downgrade is something I refused to support as a consumer.

Well it would make about as much sense as just trying to sell upgraded graphics as a new sku and including everything else for free on the existing version.

How about Bamco's tumblr?

All versions of the game will include the following features (Existing Dark Souls II owners will receive a patch to implement these elements):

*Additional NPCs added for an enhanced story experience.
*Parameter adjustments for improved game balance.
*Augmented item descriptions.
*Improved online matchmaking functionality.

Xbox One, PS4, and DirectX 11 versions of the game will include the following features (in addition to those listed above):

*Additional upgrades to graphics, sound, performance.
*Increase in maximum online players in single session (6 total).

ok im kinda pissed off about this.

All up to the dark souls 2 pc release there was so much speculation on the lighting and enchanced graphics being in the pc version. It came out and didn't have any of it but still looked decent and played fine so the world went on spinning.

Now we are back again to SPECULATING ABOUT THE GODAMN FUCKING LIGHTING in the pc version. Seriously? I thought that was over with. Godamnit From.

There had better be some kind of upgrade deal. I can't actually think of another game that was released twice on PC and charged full price for each.

Sleeping Dogs

Basically the Definitive Edition is the same premise as this game. Basically a revised updated with improved graphics and new content.

Alright, that settles that.

Still, it doesn't mean it will split the PC playerbase. They could easily just place a cap on how many people you can summon depending on which version you're playing. I think it's a little rash to assume that they're going to split the playerbase between the two PC versions. Not saying that it's not possible, but it's a pretty big assumption at this point.

A separate new pc version? :/

Well, I would like to play this with new DX11 bells and whistles, but paying twice for a game in 2 years is very lame.

Maybe 2017 steam sale when it's 5 dollars and I might be itching for a replay anyway.
