Uncharted 4 Gameplay Demo [Up: Sony - Was running at 30 fps]

Honest opinion, I was not blown away.
The game looks of course mighty impressive but with Uncharted and ND the expectation is to set some kind of new standard. This clearly didn't happen with this demo.
Maybe the demo simply wasn't particularly interesting, too much time climbing on the rocks, the shooting sections were pretty basic although they gave away a few gameplay improvements like the added verticality, more importance on stealth, a few new tricks like the rope, the ice/rock axe.
The games seems to be really inspired by the Tomb Raider 2013 reboot. It's not clear if they're hinting at an open world or semi-open world island as the setting which would be a significant change for the series. Even in this case since variety is an important part in the success of the Uncharted formula I hope that the game takes place in different places around the world and not in a single big setting like the TR reboot.
Overall I'm happy with the gameplay demo, it was more than I expected at this stage, it means that development is progressing well and I'm sure that they have lots of tricks up their sleeve, graphics will improve a lot as well, but next time I see the game I want to be amazed like happened with the U2 and U3 E3 demos, something that didn't happen today.

Honest question, what were you expecting visually that wasn't here? Because this is exactly what I was expecting from visuals if you extrapolated from the highly idealised initial showing. Bare in mind that the initial vid was shown simply to demonstrate the visuals...This wasn't, this is a pure gameplay sequence.

I genuinely wonder how people would have responded if they E3 showing didn't happen. I mean you have some posters in here praising stuff like the visuals of say SoM or Sunset Overdrive, which is completely fine, those games look good. This game clearly looks much better, and yet there is a rather tepid if not wholly negative response from some. Personally, I can see how people believe there might be a downgrade, but I only really see a difference in the three factors...Lighting which could be down to ToD...some differences in Drake's model which could be higher LoD for cutscene or change in the actual model (maybe hair was paired back), and heavy dof.

Right so I never had a PS3 to play Uncharted, but is this series just Drake being sarcastic and talking to skeletons? Because I like it.

It's what makes the series to me. I'm not that crazy about the gameplay (it works but it's been done to death) but there is a charisma to the characters that makes Uncharted stand apart from most games.

Something looks off.

one says trailer, one says footage. One was an in-game trailer, one was gameplay.

Its not modern gamers, its PC elitists. There is no planet in which you aren't impressed by U4 coming from a console background.
Only high end PC gamers can possibly enter this thread and say they are not impressed by the graphics.

And if you pay close attention, its usually always the same people here.

I don't know, people who played Killzone Shadowfall or the new Infamous game might feel a bit underwhelmed. People have super high expectations for Naughty Dog games when it come to visuals.

I think I need to take a break from GAF.

You and me both it seems.
It's becoming way too annoying to try and read just about anything on here with all the dive-by fanboy troll posting shitting up thread after thread.

It can get bad at times, but this past couple of days has been beyond terrible.

Now this is the type of thoughtful, balanced critique I can get behind. Unlike the one sentence drive by bs by some people who have an obvious allegiance to one platform or the other.
I do think it was too early to show big set pieces so early in development. They will definitely come later, no worries. Until then I am more than satisfied from what I have seen today.

I just expected it to look a lot better and from reading this thread, i'm far from alone.

May I ask which game except maybe order at the moment is better looking?

I don't know man. Its a year out and it already looks amazing.

I agree with your assessment but we don't know the full scale of the game yet. Remember when people gave infamous flack because the early screens showed no shadows? Lack of people in the street, etc. Compare the early screens for those games and compare them to the order or uncharted screens.

Are you kidding me? People are actually saying this doesn't look good? Between this and the Order 1886 there isn't anything out there that looks better at the moment.

Something looks off.

They spent a lot of time polishing that E3 footage we saw.
I doubt the gameplay part we saw was already as polished.
So it could very well be possible that they just had to scale down some stuff to get it to run live on stage. With more optimisation they might reach 60FPS and higher quality AA.
Models and lighting seemed to be of the same quality to me. But DOF was better in E3 trailer and the hair looked better.

I think this game is nearly done when it comes to the content, now they have nearly a year to polish it up.

People should really go to Order and Quantam Break threads if all they care about are visuals and not gameplay. Instead of discussing the awesome gameplay possibilities we see here, we are discussing about the differences between the E3 trailer and the demo when there is not much of a difference. Hell if people want downgrades look at horrible Witcher 3 trailer.

It honestly looked less impressive than I was expecting. Still damn good looking though, could come down to the capture not doing it justice. I also really like that DoF effect when you aim too. It's a smooth looking game.

Gameplay model's hair still looks whack compared to what was shown in the debut trailer. I wish they could nail that, because otherwise Nate looks great in action.

It looks exactly the same to me. If anything the DOF sampling/accuracy is lower, or different, in the new footage, which is what is causing the outline of his hair to look weirder in the new stuff. The hair model looks of the same quality between the two.

Really? ND wasn't making games on PS3 that were far better looking than everything else on PS3, why should,it be any different on PS4? In fact, I'd argue that they didn't even make the best looking game on PS3, because that was GoW3.

You must have had an amazing PS3.

You people are very touchy. I give a candid first opinion and it's 'BUT LOOK AT THE SKIN SHADERS'.

It looks slightly better. I'm not saying it doesn't. But it also looks a hell of alot like 2 and 3 in the overall presentation. I would say the jump is the same from 2 to 3 as 3 to 4 based on that demo.

Thats like my opinion man. Maybe I'm just not impressed with the locale.

This seems to be the crux of your criticism and I gotta disagree. UC2's demo is pretty much legendary, but it was a sequel that didn't have great expectations at the time, which is what made it so impressive, and we were happy to play through it again because it was something incredibly unique at the time. UC3 just blew its load way too early with trailers, and I was left disappointed that its huge set pieces were more or less all exposed beforehand.

They did it right with TLOU. Kept everything very close to the chest, and only showed enough to display its gameplay mechanics and story. I think they're doing the same with Uncharted 4, and I still think this approach is better for an audience that has become desensitized to set pieces. They should be cool surprises for players to discover in the game, and not the centerpiece of a preview.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
I wonder if Sully will jump on enemies from behind with a knife if Drake is in danger.

"Holy shit, Nate."

Game looks good, I'll be impressed if it is 60 fps at launch. It was absurd to expect it to look like the e3 reveal as well. "In-engine" should key you in that it's not what the game is going to look like during gameplay.

The "this is the best looking game ever" and "this looks like enhanced ps3" claims are both Hyperbolic to me. The game still looks pretty impressive even if it doesn't exactly match the e3 look.

There hasn't been any complaint about U4 gameplay, which is a pretty good sign. To be honest, I am very impressed with the demo, especially how dynamic and fast-paced the combat is.

Honestly, you have to remember the E3 demonstrations contained setpieces. Not relatively standard enemy encounters like this demo. And we're earlier in the stage of typical Uncharted games relative to when they start showing gameplay. I'm actually quite content with what was shown today.

Ok so before anyone judges the graphics do yourself a favor. Go and download the video from gamersyde and then while playing it adjust your video settings. I use vlc media player and after playing with the video settings (I'm no specialist on the matter but a few quick adjustments to sigma, gamma, brightness, etc) and it's A NIGHT AND DAY DIFFERENCE.

The original stream is so bright and washed out looking in comparison, makes it look way less detailed and worse than it is!

I agree with this , the game has almost 11 months to go it's to early for a set piece.
Come E3 we will get the set piece gameplay.

This game is almost a year away from release. I think the reactions are extremely premature.
