Uncharted 4 Gameplay Demo [Up: Sony - Was running at 30 fps]

This thread is fucking embarrassing.

Uncharted gets criticized for being a string of set pieces with little correlation, a minority shooting gallery, a watered down Tomb Raider rip off, and when it comes back with beefed up level design and gameplay people bitch and moan.

Truth is, Naughty Dog reveal trailers always use in-engine assets, maybe even running in real time, but from that trailer to release code there have always been artistic and technical discrepancies. (See Drake sporting a goatee in the UC2 VGA teaser)

Matter of fact, stop being so fucking finnicky and shallow expecting the typical Hollywood Michal Bay shit that you'd have criticized to shit and appreciate what's on show here. It's a much more dynamic, organic and cohesive gameplay experience than running through a bloated set piece pressing X every couple of seconds.

Exactly. This game looks like being the most dynamic and fluid of all the Uncharted's and yet people who have criticised the series in the past don't seem to care about the game play improvements that is clearly apparent even from this early look, instead complaining about downgrades in Drakes hair graphics or whatever.

I really don't care if something is different or not, to be honest:

This character model here is good enough.

This is a real game that's going to look like this that I am going to play next year. That's incredibly exciting.

Had some fun with the contrast and all that, reduced to 720p to compensate the horrible compression (and it was the gamersyde vid..)

Talk about an horrible game! Look goergous to me, people are debating on the downgrade level of skin shaders we wouldn't have seen in a fucking movie 6 or 7 years ago.. my god..

I think people are forgetting a lot of things there. Clearly, for exemple, The Order must be way more advanced in term of assets§light/iq, but this is a confined game. Naughty Dogs shows us a insanely large level with perfect IQ/distance of view, tons of dynamic things, great interactivity.. And it's meant to be 60fps (i guess...). And 1080p. What they showed is some sorcery compared to other things on the same hardware.

Disappointing showing. I'm fine with the level of detail. It wouldn't bother me with less.

30fps however is a huge downgrade. This style of game really needs 60fps over nice looking foliage. Lets hope their E3 target hasn't shifted.

The game play looks slightly better. It's still a bit too shooterish though. Thematically I think it would work better with a greater emphasis on melee and stealth. That clip shows they've leaned that way, but are still bound by the framework of the previous games.

That's just doing the XB1 gamma trick to make it pop more by adding black crush, though.

Not it's not, the other footage is from a Twitch stream, the gamersyde one is supposed to be from the Sony press site and even it seems to have not quite right gamma settings someone said earlier.

Considering there's still months to go and the game is targeting 60fps, I think the graphics look fantastic.

What I really love about the trailer was the level design and revamped gameplay. It seemed so open and vertical and options for stealth everywhere, the AI also played along with looking for drake at his last known position and such... Its nothing new, but it is something fresh for uncharted. And I love the new climbing stuff too.

I think this thread shows they made the right decision, business wise, going 30FPS over 60FPS.

The amount of shit this game got visually to start this thread really drives home why so many developers choose graphics over framerate.

I don't know if it's my internet connection or my Youtube settings, but all the videos of the gameplay I can find are 360p even though the titles say 1080p. Any help would be much appreciated!

The best part of this trailer?

The guns look like they feel a lot better to shoot. Hard to describe past Uncharted games gunplay, but it felt....squishy?

This ones looks like it has punch to it.

Anyone know what I mean?

Oh yes they did.did, Gunplay looked much better.

Is it just me or is anyone else getting a little tired of the rock hopping platforming segments? I have an idea of why they do technically (like the ladders in TLoU), but it just feels so boring. Then again I never enjoyed the jungle settings much in any of the games, for me all the memorable levels were the castles, ruins, temples and urban areas.

No, it's fixing it. You can see when the ND logo shows, that black should be black, but it's on limited RGB and instead is on 16 instead of 0. The video was rendered incorrectly.

Yeah, I love the gameplay expansions and how smoothly they are integrated with the bigger areas. One of my favorites was the stealth under the huge foliage.

Lord this day. I finally got home to catch up on everything.

Quick thoughts.

At first I thought it was a pretty significant downgrade from the reveal but once he gets into the open vistas and starts moving the plants around it looked absolutely incredible. I still think that the visuals are a pretty big gulf between what we first saw and this reveal but it really does look amazing. A couple parts seemed like they were using the LOD textures the whole time. There was a crispness on Drake and the foliage around him but a odd softness with the rocks and other geometry. It just looked strange. The splashing water in the cave also looked really odd.

That said the gameplay looks sublime.
ND are truly the god tier of combining cinematic moments seamlessly into the controls. All the clunky transitions between melee, gunplay, and qte that were present in UC3 seem to be completely ironed out and it is glorious. The enemies all react completely different depending on how they are taken out. They twist around in surprise when pushed off a ledge. They slip before hitting the ground clawing with their hands when they are going down a inclined ravine it was just marvelous.

Love the verticality of the level and general openess. It looks like UC1 + UC2 and TLOU. Pretty much the perfect combination as far as I am concerned.

So hyped guys! So hyped!

Did u watch the gamersyde download and take into account the lighting is slightly washed out? Because I have a hard time believing anyone can say it is a "significant" downgrade.

Looked damn good but not graphically amazing as expected, which sadly is an unfair expectation to put on them but ND have the mantle now of showing you stuff that looks like it's from the future which this doesn't. Still looks fun, if it's 60FPS I will be very impressed but if they caved to go 30 that would bum me out.

Started pretty disappointing. The linear platforming sections of this game need more innovation. Being able to use that pick to move around the wall a bit more adds nothing to the game and I have little faith the grapple hook will be a meaningful addition either.

Shootout scenario design is a huge leap for the series. Hope they focus on good AI though for difficulty. The harder modes in the Uncharted games are uninspired.

I see potential but I'm not blown away.

Oh, visually? It looks alright. For 1080p/30fps I would expect more, from ND at least. Rocky environments looked rough. Foliage a bit better.
My take on the pick is that it means you now need to time a button press while platforming. So no more auto-platforming with a lack of tension.

Thanks for all the LoLs folks.

After the E3 footage, I think I was expecting something graphically along the lines of the Order 1886, but with ND sneaking around. I did not see that, and still do not after looking at the Gamersyde 1080p footage, but I am not overly concerned. I think 60 fps is achievable with this level of fidelity. Animations looks smooth and really nice. The (self) banter made me laugh at least once. This game still has time to cook and I can't wait to see more.

ElTorro

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
The most important question is whether the game will take place entirely on that island, or if there will be more variety. Has that been answered by ND already?

It's impossible to tell as my tv settings or video player settings might be off? For me a few quick adjustments made the video look much better; more like the rich colored/detailed ones being posted here. Unless your 100% confident that your video settings are perfect it's worth playing with.

I'm currently re-rendering 5 minutes of gameplay footage with fixed black levels. I'll post it when it's uploaded.

This is an incredible attention to detail

The waterfall is falling and isnt passing through the 2, it is splashing on drake's head and making it flat and wet and part of it is splashing on the mercenaries hands and its splashing from his hand all around him and interacting like it would a real physical object, you can see the splash affects on the mercs right hand and drakes head and neck

I watched Youtube video and then download the Gamersyde 1080p video. Holy shit, the difference in video quality is like night and day. For best experience. hold DS4 controller in your hand and watch it on a big screen TV. So good.....oh, I don't know why all the nitpicking out there. Naughty Dog still have a year to polish this game and my mind is already blown.

For a title that isn't shipping for around the year, it's absolutely mind blowing. Naughty Dog will spit shine this game and they have been known to make some of the most technically advanced games on any platform given the nature of the hardware limitations.

Nope..nope.. no downgrade the lighting is different (Time of day?) from the E3 video.. except the 60fps thing.. watch the gamersyde video on your tv.. and seems the contrast is messed up little on that video but you can see its the same models.

DO NOT WATCH THE YOUTUBE VIDEO

Seriously, just watched Uncharted 4 footage on Gamersyde and all the subtle details are lost on youtube. Some of the textures themselves actually look lifted straight out of real life and you can see all the interesting rock reflections.

Imagine recording a home video in 1080p, and then saving it on a VHS tape. The quality gets destroyed, making everything look blurry and washed out. This is the same difference you're seeing on Youtube.

I'm just talking about the opening area. It just looks so different. I will concede that your point about the lighting makes a lot of sense though.

To be clear I think it still looks absolutely marvelous.

I watched the Gamersyde video. Ill check it out on my TV. Don't you guys think it looked like there were LOD issues going on or something in the beginning? Seemed like the textures weren't loading.

This was really a weird one for me.

Visuals were kinda.. interesting to say at least. Despite not feeling like they matched the quality of the reveal trailer model, the character models look fantastic (possibly just a cutscene model vs in-game model). The sheer attention to detail is astounding: Drake's body and clothes actually fully react to their surroundings.

If water pours on his head, parts of his hair get wet instead of the entire head part of the model; if it just hits his pants, you can see the stains. If he slides through mud, the mud stays on the exact sides of the model which collided with it, and the same with dirt. And in the same way, the environment reacts to the characters if they interact with the vegetation for example. It really looked organic in that regard. Also, the engine seems to be pretty powerful at creating huge landscapes and vistas. The more open level-design added to the feeling of being at vast and open place.

But man, there were many parts of the geometry that just didn't look good at all, especially some rocks and cliffs. I'm talking about the cave and jungle sections where some rock walls just look way too flat and kinda robbed of their characteristic nature in favor of giving players a guideline where to climb. And this might be my biggest issue currently: the game is at the same time realistic and unrealistic instead of focusing on one aspect. The game looks like the freaking real-life at times and yet it is unable to shake off its videogame origins. Like, to put it bluntly: Uncharted 4 looks maybe too much Uncharted for me.

What I mean by that is that the realistic visuals don't match with the at times goofy looking gameplay; there are still clearly marked walls that show you where you can climb instead of some kind of free climbing (which I first assumed was the case since Drake is wearing a karabiner). Drake making loud sounds doesn't have any effect on enemies. And there is just much more that and you know what: I know it has to be this way, not only because consoles can only do so much but also because this is still a video game that has to feel good while playing. But I was looking that video and all I was thinking "yep, sure looks like a Uncharted 4".

Once I realized that this is more of an evolution of a concept than a revolution, I noticed some things that looked very cool: Melee combat seems more context sensitive than ever and looks much better implemented before. The transitions between animations make it all seem very organic and it is hard to say when one begins and when one stops. The hook grappling thing seems cool, especially during mid-combat. And from what it looks like, it seems there seems to be an option for stealth which I would absolutely love since the series has some of the most tiresome gunfights I ever encountered - despite thinking that what I've seen so far from the gunplay looking better than the other three games.

I just realized that I wrote much more than I wanted to, but yeah, those are my thoughts. This has some potential, but isn't exactly the kind of huge leap forward in terms of the game concept which felt archaic at some points of the footage. Kinda felt like the most beautiful bird being kept in a rusty looking cage.

Also, I want to make clear that this footage didn't make me less interested in the game. I appreciate the fact that Naughty Dog actually had a live running gameplay demo which speaks volumes of their confidence and therefore I will keep following this title and hope that some of the next builds will showcase more impressive segments. This is after all a game deep in development and I hope that I could convey my opinion good enough.

And even then that video at Gamersyde kills a lot of foliage detail, some obvious macroblocking, anyway that's the best we'll get for now I think.

Uncharted 2 and 3 both had a variety of environments, many of which weren't seen until the game was out.

I am sure Uncharted 4 will have a few as well.

Assuming that you think The Order has higher fidelity in visuals, that game is going gold in less than two months compared to close to a year for UC4. Makes some sense.

But fucking lol at the "mediocre and pedestrian" comment.

It is beautiful. I think some people were expecting a more photoreal look to the environment. I prefer it as is, with its painterly vibe, making it look like concept art.

I think what you call a painterly effect comes from the compression here ;)
