Uncharted 4 Gameplay Demo [Up: Sony - Was running at 30 fps]

Looks great.
Very polished for being a year away.

But is the 30fps final? Or just a placeholder until they do the final optimizations?

Pre-Alpha right now but who knows. That could end up being the final framerate. Remember they are targeting 60 FPS for every game they make from now on (Doesn't mean they'll get there everytime). And who knows for sure, maybe they have the game running in the mid-40s right now but for public demo purposes it was probably smart to lock it to 30. I'm sure by E3 we'll know for sure if it'll be 60 FPS or not. As far as we know, that is still the target.

i don't even...

how can someone be on neogaf for so long and doesn't know the difference between a high res pic from a low res one?

Do you know what dithered means? That poster was just talking about the way the foliage fades out when it's too close to the camera, which is using ordered dithering for transparency.

I really hope the next Uncharted allows for a bit more exploration than in the past. Not quite a full open world, but open world-lite would be a nice refresher for the franchise.

I remember posting this in the Uncharted 4 theories thread and I feel like I got pretty much what I asked for in regards to an "open-world lite" aspect of the game. It seemed like there are enough branching paths, sort of like TLoU, to encourage the player to explore.

I would love if Naughty Dog went the same way as they did with TLOU Remaster. Options for locked 30 and better shadows/effects and unlocked 45+fps for those who wants more fluidity.

So far we haven't heard otherwise about it... as far as I know.

Even if UC4 is hitting variably hitting 30-60 fps with it without optimal streamlining, I would think they would lock it at a stable 30 when showing it the public so it's not all over the place. I'll wait for a statement from ND, unless they released one already about this.

Thanks!
I'm really curious on the matter, because I know they have said a lot of stuff about hitting 60, so it would seem silly to go back on that, but having seen the trailer, I understand that that is a TON of detail that they are pushing, so I wouldn't blame them for holding it back to 30.

....Now, I need to go ahead and finish UC2....
And start UC3 after that....been sitting on by ginormous backlog...

This looks exciting! I loved the part where he must use the rock as both navigation and cover in the environment. However, it does look like a state you want to avoid for total stealth based approach.

Also those leaves...LOOKED LIKE ACTUALLY LEAVES!

Damn, just thought about how they didn't announce Uncharted trilogy for PS4 today...guess they still could in the next few months for a summer release, then UC4 early-mid November.

Game looks like it will be great! I think it's possible that the game is still targeting 60fps. Perhaps it is not stable enough at 60 yet to show it off, so they locked it down to 30 for a consistent on-stage performance without tearing and unstable frame rates.

Assuming that you think The Order has higher fidelity in visuals, that game is going gold in less than two months compared to close to a year for UC4. Makes some sense.

But fucking lol at the "mediocre and pedestrian" comment.

Most people these days don't believe opinions are valid unless they're extreme. It's the only way to elicit a reaction strong enough to provide a nice rush of endorphins.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to find some elephant porn.

It looks exactly the same to me. If anything the DOF sampling/accuracy is lower, or different, in the new footage, which is what is causing the outline of his hair to look weirder in the new stuff. The hair model looks of the same quality between the two.

IMO, while the geometry of the hair looks the same, the lighting and shadowing is not.

Sadly, adjusting the image is not going to add the realistic shadowing and lighting that the E3 teaser had. Naughty Dog has said before "the only difference between the cut scenes and in game is a little higher quality lighting and shadowing." They hope most people won't notice the difference. Compared to the E3 teaser, the hair is missing smooth shadow maps, which help add translucency and blur. This allows hair to look real.

It's probably been said already but I'm too tired to read every page to check but rewatch the initial E3 teaser. Look at the background rocks, look at the trees and environment, it's all basically the same. I remember being really impressed by the first trailer, then I rewatched it and the "real time gameness" showed through when I looked at the background rock textures. The quality of his face just takes all the focus. Someone should side by side today's close up with the E3 one. They're the same.

The thing that impressed me most about this was the freedom, it seemed like there were more options for taking out the enemies and it looked amazing to play. That's all I want. This year's releases have been garbage. They've all felt sluggish and bland. Just boring. Zero risks taken in the story (oh no we might offend if we cover ANYTHING adult) or the gameplay (da muneez). This looks like actual fun and it looks like a PC game, the engine looks great, I don't know what everyone was expecting. What on PC looks better than this to the point where you're stunned? There's nothing. Just little details. Anyway the value of graphics has gone down to the point where I just don't care anymore.

Anyone remember "Rise Of The Robots"? That's where focusing on cutting edge graphics gets us. Just shiny blobs jumping around. To think I almost wasted a Christmas gift by asking Santa for that.

I honestly think that if gaming sites and companies didn't bring up resolution and frame rate the only people talking about them would be PC building forum users. I was running Dead Rising 3 on medium settings the other day by accident and had no idea until I checked the settings. I was still having fun. I put it on ultra and had the same amount of fun, not more. Nothing changed. Well, maybe my GPU temperature.

Isn't it weird how extreme the gaming community is? We either want 8 bit to the point where it looks like an Atari game or if 3D it has to run double the framerate (I've seen some PC forum users claiming that 60 FPS is game breaking now, only 120 is acceptable. Don't know what GPU they're using) of a movie and be quadruple the resolution. I get the framerate thing for fast games but not the resolution thing. If there's sufficient AA 720 and 1080 aren't that different. But if the game works at 30 people are so invested that it seems they'll convince themselves to not try it. A really weird form of elitism.

It looked like more Uncharted with better graphics... until 9 minutes and 15 seconds into the gameplay trailer.

BOOM. Sold.

Insane For Sony
I found an easy way to watch Gamersyde's trailer and make it look the way it's supposed to!

Switch your TV's RGB range to Limited if there's such option on the TV. Or if you have older TV, Limited is probably the only thing it can display.

Now, on your PS3, switch the output to Full. Then watch the video through PS3, and enjoy the restored brightness range :)

:O

Naughty Dog you did it again! I was floored. Such good footage. The graphics, the gameplay, everything was top notch. I can't wait until I have Uncharted 4 in my hands so I can play this amazing game. Lord have mercy. Kudos to Naughty Dog. I'm officially a fan for life, cause y'all keep hitting it out of the ballpark and impressing me.

For PS4 hardware, it's impressive but nothing near like what was being hyped up and not as good looking as the initial reveal but I honestly wasn't expecting it to look like that in-game.

Looked fun though.

Looks nowhere near as good as the reveal, nevermind this running at half the framerate they supposedly promised it'd be running at? Quite an amazing feat.

Nate's outfit reminded me of the Far cry 3 dude.

Color wise. Blue shirt tan pants is a pretty good color pallet.

definitely think its the best costume yet though I miss 3's scarf.

It's finally done! Entire Gamersyde video with Full RGB levels. It should look exactly as Naughty Dog intended now.

EDIT:
NO AUDIO. I screwed up when I exported the file and forgot to check the audio checkbox. A file with audio is being reuploaded now, but I'll leave this up for anyone who just wants the eyecandy.

Disappointed that it wasn't 60FPS, but it looked and played well imo. I can't wait to see what the story ND has to tell with this last go round!

Finally got to a wifi connection to watch the demo. Wow. Not going to comment much on visuals, had to use my phone, but this demo was exactly how I would have evolved the series. Guns that actually sound good, increased verticality, added emphasis on mobility, adaptive stealth, and even proper gun straps. Impressed as hell.

My thoughts on the demo:

Really liked that naughty dog chose to show a core moment to moment gameplay instead of a setpiece, firstly because the uncharted series setpieces were spoiled way too before the game released and i can't control myself to watch these pre-release videos. I hope that they take a the last of us approach in terms of what they reveal before the release of the game.

The gameplay of tlou was great because of how replayable it made the game to me, the game already has a really nice pacing, and i love exploring the game mechanics and the different approachs that i can make. not only that but also the fact that different conversations happen very often or if they are repeated, they are quick and well made enough for me to enjoy it again. Sometimes in uc 2 and 3, when i tried to go stealth, i sometimes encountered an impossible obstacle that i had to tackle the situation in an offensive manner. In uc3, if you take down every single enemy in the session before you enter the airplane, when you need to climb up to the roof, there will be two guards next to each other, if i take one down, the other is alerted. The problem is, if you alert the guy, the game spawns other enemies even if you killed everyone else. because of this, some parts of the combat in the uncharted series were a little restrictive.

so when they showed the new combat in this demo, i was wowed, they introduced new items in this demo (i don't know if they will introduce other ways to traverse the land, i hope so, it would be very cool!), and the stealth had a much bigger emphasis in it, you now can even break line of sight, run away without killing everyone, sneak up and stealthly kill them. a lot of options! the level was also huge, much bigger than even ship graveyard. and now with the stealth refined, you won't have some of the problems you had when playing those sections. this will make the game VERY replayable, and it will expand the gameplay a looooot! seriously impressed by it. maybe i played too much uncharted and the last of us, but i think these refinements will make the game much more enjoyable to a lot of people, even if they don't notice it right now. the hook and dagger are cool additions too, making the verticality and flexibility of the gameplay even bigger, props to the guys and girls at nd responsible for this.

another thing that i noticed was that they implemented these "narrative" scenes like in tlou where you can go to a point of interest, press triangle, and nathan will comment on it. it will make exploring the game much more fun than looking for the relics too (specially because those were generally too out of the common path).

nathan also took a note from that dead guy and put it on his note, what would that be? hints to a side treasure? or would it be like the notes from tlou (where some of them had codes and hints for vaults and items if you explored the houses and places of the game). would be very cool for the collectables to be these notes. I think that the map behind the note is just cosmetic, do you think that it can lead to a side treasure like i said before? the demo tried to compress the moment to moment gameplay, so if they included that, it can have some kind of importance to the game.

Oh and nathan has a brother? WHAT? i will be very cool to see them banter, specially that it's troy baker (would be cool to see james mccaffrey as his older brother, making monologues just like his little brother haha, but i love troy so it's not a problem).

anyway, loved the enhancements to the uncharted formula, and they brought the best parts of the tlou gameplay to uc without uc losing its owns characteristics.

i wonder what changed from amy stepping down to neil/bruce taking the helm. they didn't scrap everything altogether, but the game seems very far along since they took the helm, officially at least, in march.

I'm pretty surprised about the visual disappointments. In fact, asset wise, this is about as good as games are ever going to be. The IQ is pretty close to perfect for 1080p.

It looks amazing to me.

Exactly. I don't really understand how people can be disappointed with the visuals of all things.

hmm watching it again in better quality made me change my mind.. it is pretty goddamn impressive after all. the environment is astonishing, and i got a feeling it's even much more open and bigger than we think. that last shot when the camera went up... goddamn at the scale. maybe you'll go through that entire valley and not in a corridor? that'd be next-gen enough for me.

oh and i really liked how the foliage reacted to movement, a couple of times it looked just perfect.

i had a weird feeling watching this though, i kinda wanted it to be in first person lol, would've looked even more amazing perhaps. im the only one, right? right. plus im kinda tired of Nathan Drake.. sorry, just dont wanna look at or listen to him anymore :/

Yeah, I really want to know what kind of AA solution they're using.

Once again, I'm reminded of how top-class ND's level designers are.

The whole level itself is practically a set-piece, that just based off that combat fight, could had been 3-4 different set-pieces on its own right.

And this is just one encounter without any of the actual set piece moments.

Watched live stream yesterday and I was like meh.. looks like ps3 game remastered and then watched youtube hd version... Holy shit...Time to download gamershyde video and be blown away.

Few things
Leaves looks to be curved, are they model individually? Polygon count doesnt look to be limiting factor for games now.
That draw distance with all vegetation!
To me model looks better then E3 demo with more poly counts. I want to see night time gameplay now. In most of games difference between the looks of day and night graphics is err... night and day. Example that infamous night time picture of street.

Game play needs improvements though, if its going to be similar to previous uncharted games, it will be a disappointment specially after TLOU. I am not saying it should be same as TLOU but we should not be able to go through levels without thinking twice.

I haven't checked the thread in detail, but everyone notices the awesome branching paths of the world now, right? The game looks like it might be huge. It's probably really creatively strung together to make sure you hit all the right set pieces and moments to progress.

The game looks great in my opinion and the gameplay looks like it will be fun since there are now a lot more options in terms of how you tackle the set pieces.

Hopefully the levels are a bit more like individual sandboxes with a lot more freedom ala Crysis 1. Especially since there is now the grapple hook and rock/ice pick.

Here is a much higher quality version of my fixed RGB levels video.

For those just joining us, several of us have noticed that both the official YouTube and Gamersyde videos have been rendered incorrectly, using limited RGB range, instead of full RGB range.

When viewed on a display that uses full RGB range (such as a computer monitor), this causes the image to appear "washed out". You are not seeing the correct colours because the video is rendered incorrectly for your dispaly.

Because both the lower and upper ranges of colour values are limited, this results in a reduction in contrast level. This is most obvious when looking at the Naughty Dog logo at the start of the video - the black background is a very dark grey instead of black.

I used the Sony Vegas Levels plugin to correct the RGB levels (it has a preset for this exact thing).

edit - a better full length video has been posted by Canklestank
