Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis Episode 9:

Finally we get some kind of forward momentum after spending so much time in the capital. Also, Favaro pulls out his best Monkey D Luff impression and I know I would trust the guy who looks like Palpatine's body double.

The content of the speech was allright, but they super hamfisted it in. It's hard to believe that one full wipe to something so absurd had a guild of raiders contemplate quitting raiding, and that really undercut the 'believability' of his speech in turn, which was pretty good by itself.

Don't forget they've established that after dying you face your worst failures, so it's kind of understandable that they'd be kind of depressed right after reviving. The beginning of this season had indicated that those deaths were enough to make most of his guild quit too.

Their dialogue in the beginning of this episode also indicates that they think that this was due to the world changing, not a standard gameplay mechanic. They fear that the world is changing, making high level raids completely impossible. It's not just a matter of that one wipe. They can't exactly complain to the developers or something right now...

Does anyone else sometimes drop a show halfway just to pick it back up once all of the episodes have aired?

They still make Book Stores?

We only have a Chapters here so I'm not sure what other book store chains there are in other countries. With the move to more online materials I guess book stores aren't doing as well as they have compared to pre e-book times.

I still think having a physical copy is the best way to experience manga though. I prefer it over an e-book version.

Why does everyone in fate/zero speak Japanese?

For the same reason that many shows (English ones too) have characters speak in one language even if they come from different countries or areas of the world where the primary language being used isn't taught. Unless you're going for historical accuracy/realism it usually isn't worth it.

I think in the context of Log Horizon's world/story and what had already been established it made sense for them to suddenly feel like giving up after the 3x boss raid. As had been mentioned when Shirou first approached William the combination of losing memories and being trapped in the world was causing more and more players to lose interest in raiding and the game aspect of their world which is why they had to pull from Demikas and other solo players to complete the 24 player raid team. Just in this raid alone they had basically clawed their way tooth and nail just to get to that point barely getting by after multiple attempts per boss. They were barely figuring out the boss they were stuck on when two more equally as powerful ones showed up and basically acted like a giant wall that was borderline unfair. It's not like they could just log off and look up online if this was even possible or what strategies other top raid groups were using to attempt to take this triple boss threat down, in the story they're really the only raid group left doing the raid content. Remember the situation with the FFXI super boss that took 18 hours where people were vomiting and crap? Imagine that only it's not a game on your computer but you're living in this world doing the fighting for real. You've invest weeks into this raid living and sleeping in a cave fighting monsters and bosses that took hours to kill and suddenly BAM 3 of these multi hour bosses at the same time that wipe you out and sent you back to the start? They can't just log our and take their mind off it anymore, this game is literally their real world now and to invest that much time into a raid to fail due to something that really looks impossible is totally understandable.

As I said above I think the speech works almost perfectly as a "why we nerd about video games" speech even with almost no context of Log Horizon the anime or Log Horizon the mmo game they played before being trapped in the world. The only part I would really cut were the parts where William was questioning himself which were when the speech felt more log horizon anime and less of a general speech about gaming. I guess in the context of Log Horizon the anime the speech probably could have been cut for time while still having the same general impact on the story. Shard on twitter put it best that it feels like they just copy+paste the speech literally from the novel and a monologue like that which would work in a book doesn't always translate into video form. At the same time I get the feeling the creators of the anime really liked the speech and wanted to have the whole thing complete despite where they probably should have cut it down for the sake of a 20 minute anime episode instead of making the whole episode a 20 minute anime speech. Perhaps they could have done an edited version of the speech for the tv version then on the dvd/br release have the whole uncut speech in a directors cut version of the episode.

Personally I think the speech connected with me as a hard core gamer where I may not be a big MMO guy I completely get that mindset and that desire to "stay home on a friday night to game instead of being social". I was that guy in high school and when I did try to reach out and be social I would often get picked on and laughed at which would further lead me to wanting to spend time playing games and hanging out with the people like me who enjoyed playing games. Even today as a 25 year old adult at my work place my close friends are all into this kind of stuff and we'll spend whole lunch breaks talking about this stuff which sometimes gets laughs out of the non gamers in the room. I really stopped thinking about the speech in the context of Log Horizon and started listening to it like a speech being given by a gamer about why we play games. Very much like Kevin Butler's speech at the e3 2010 Sony press event as a gamer that speech was hype as hell, as part of the Sony press conference it probably should have been cut in half as it did interrupt the flow of information about new games the way William's speech interrupted the flow of LH's story.

So I guess the tl;dr for this is I ended up loving the speech because I'm a hardcore gamer and it resonated with me personally, upon further reflection in context of the anime it did go on to long as it was basically the entire episode outside of the last minute when Shirou has his character moment.

I would say that I enjoyed the concept of the speech as a 'hardcore gamer' (inb4 #gamergate) and I could relate to a lot of what he was saying.

However I felt like the scenario in the anime was derived in order to facilitate him giving that speech, the author heavy-handedly voicing his opinion, and that it really started to drag near the end. It's something where I feel it would have been more effective if it had been broken up into a couple of areas or episodes.

Not anime, but in my Japanese class we watched Sukeban Deka: Code Name = Saki Asamiya . It was, interesting, I guess. Kind of want to watch the first two now but I doubt they're streaming anywhere legally.

Importing the novel shouldn't cost you an liver unlike anime disc.

Also I thought Sentai already licensing the anime disc.

I'm not fluent in Japanese though I wish I was, importing books filled with moon runes wouldn't exactly be what I'd call a good investment unless I got serious about studying Japanese and was using the book as some kind of goal for the classes.

Well let me throw this back at you. Do you want Japanese VAs to 'speak' English?

I'm pretty sure that was the best part of Terror In Resonance and the series would have been much worse without it

Does anyone else sometimes drop a show halfway just to pick it back up once all of the episodes have aired?

Sometimes because of life I've done this, but outside of OP I generally prefer to stay on top of ongoing anime I'm watching. OP I've decided to join the "watch the arc when it's finished in a marahon" brigade so that the toei pacing doesn't bring me down.

I still think having a physical copy is the best way to experience manga though. I prefer it over an e-book version.

Yep physically owning manga is way more enjoyable then e-books. Maybe if I got a tablet that became a glorified e-reader for books/manga I'd feel different but reading e-books on my laptop/cell phone is a real drag.

Speaking of things that are a real drag

Sailor Moon R 15-16

Magical girl shows have learned a lot since Sailor Moon. Like how you don't just introduce new merch out of nowhere that barely changes the stock footage, even cosmetically. I'm glad Ami got a new attack - one with actual offensive capabilities - and seeing what the MotWs can do is nice, but man. The phone booth scene. The breakup. It's the Brainwashed Mamoru plot all over again, and lasting for nearly as long. Chibiusa's not too bad, though. Also, what kind of name is Bob-Floy for an ice cream parlor?

Is anyone else watching Seven Deadly Sins? It's kind of pervy at times, but the animation and the action is some of the best I've seen this year. It's pretty damn good. It's basically like playing a JRPG, but in anime form and it looks like some Dragon Quest/Toriyama influence went into the art as well. I dig it as dumb action-fueled fun. More people should watch it if they can cope with the random grope sessions.

I kind of forget about it and G-Reco (and YGO arc v) mostly due to the fact that neither is streaming on Crunchyroll or Funimation. I keep meaning to check it out

Super Yoyo - Episodes 1-22 [END]

Super Yoyo is one of the few anime to make it on AnimeGAF's List of Influential Anime. Being on that list must mean it's pretty special in some way or another.

Super Yoyo's premise in itself isn't that bad for an anime. Our protagonist is Shunichi Domoto who is only really competing in yoyo to defeat Seito Hojoin who beat him in a yoyo battle. He gets more and more engrossed into it, to the point that he's talking to his fingers (and later his yoyo), and causing injury to himself just to keep playing yoyo and defeating his rival. It really does sound like a normal run of the mill sports anime!

Shunichi is interesting as we see that he starts to develop a real lack of self confidence in himself at some points. Early on he starts talking to his fingers (with faces drawn on) for advice on what to do with himself and his yoyo-ing and later in the tournaments he randomly starts assuming he's going to lose and there's no hope him winning. He's the complete opposite of most of these protagonists who always seem to be full to the brim with confidence and always believe in themselves. He does try though, sometimes to the extreme. Practicing for hours on end and putting on weighted clothing (where did they get that idea from ;) ) all to get better at yoyo. It generally has a negative effect on himself as he regularly gets hit in the face, has cut fingers and later on even picks up a serious injury in the arm all from the intense yoyo-ing he's doing.

The two major 'List' worthy events are Episode 9 and the entirity of Round 2 (and the semi-finals match to a lesser extent).

Episode 9 is very strange and is something that anyone going in this blind would never see coming. It's as if it belongs in a different anime it's so out of place.

Episode 9 Spoilers:
What happens is that Earth is being invaded by the Yoyo Devil and he's hypnotising the entire world into having bad Yoyo etiquette. Shunichi is visited by an alien who forces him to defeat the Yoyo Devil and save the world by transforming Shunichi into Yoyo Man. The Yoyo Devil sounds like Dr. Claw and is later found out to just be a slightly overweight man who is just really clumsy. Yoyo Man saves the world. It has absolutely nothing to do with what happens before apart from it being to do with yoyos and having the same characters. In fact it also has nothing to do with what happens after as it's just a random dream Shunichi has while asleep and having a back massage.

Round 2 of the Yoyo Tournament is where we see that whoever is running this tournament is the most forward thinking person in this show. Up until this point the tournament has been pretty standard with matches being challenges in doing the most tricks the fastest without messing up. Round 2 however involves a Cyberspace Machine where the players must enter the Digital World to race their opponents on hoverboards powered by Yoyo tricks. With the current gaming landscape thinking about VR more than ever and to a lesser extent Motion Control it's an amazing thing to behold. Sure everyone taking part looks like a third rate superhero when they are all connected up to the machine but it really is an impressive idea (Shame that the video game adaptation of this is just a regular old Game Boy game, it might have hoverboards in it who knows).

The ending of Super Yoyo is definately one that will stick for a while as
Shunichi actually loses the final match against Seito Hojoin, losing the tournament in the progress. It completely threw me off guard and I didn't expect him to lose at all because let's face it, who would've expected the protagonist to lose against his rival in the final battle?

The dub of this is absolutely hilarious and is a reason to watch on its own. The voicing in this show seem to have been altered for some reason or another with some strange effects. Most of the time everyone's voice is echoed slightly giving the effect that it's either a permenant dream sequence or they're in a cathedral. Other voices are sped up and down which makes some characters, especially Hojoin sound robotic. Other voices just sound plain bad. Chuta has this odd Daffy Duck style voice which gets very grating and his is the worst sounding in the show. The rest are all pretty bad as well although nothing as bad as Chuta.

In short Super Yoyo is not really that bad of a show, it's a shame that there is no subbed version available as I feel that it wouldn't be as bad with the original cast (Topping the VAs for this dub is no challenge at all).

Personally I couldn't get past the first episode since the main "hero" is a straight up molester.

Just picked up the Ouran High School Host Club blu and the (six) audio commentaries are a fucking riot. Like just as enjoyable as the show itself. Each one features Caitlin Glass (ADR Director and voice of Haruhi) with different cast members. Totally worth picking up in the Right Stuf sale for anyone that enjoyed the series.

I didn't mean to once again derail the thread into Fate talk :X I'm just going though my Crunchyroll que watching the anime from the past few days I missed due to having an entire weekend of video gaming, speaking of that.

Log Horizon S2 E10

That speech by the guild master has got to be one of the all time best "FUCK YEAH GAMERS" speeches of all time. Even without any knowledge of the anime Log Horizon or the in universe game Log Horizon he mentions in the speech I think any hard core gamer can relate to what was said.

In the context of the Log Horizon anime, it's crazy how this episode was basically just a monologue by a secondary character who really hasn't been around that much and yet it completely worked. We get yet another view of Log Horizon the game and the world they are now trapped in and some new insight into events that happened in season 1. Just another great episode of one of the best series I've ever seen.

Were the Log Horizon novels translated officially into English? I would totally buy and read them if they are to support the series because it's that good.

Edit: So apparently reading though the comments I'm the only person who liked the speech this much and thought it worked really well :X

I think the speech is fine , i think that the pacing of the speech could have been a little bit faster .
Seeing william questionning himself as he tries to convince everyone ( including himself ) was a nice POV of another kind of character in LH . I liked it. It's just a shame that it's just the "moment" , the only moment so far that he got to be devellopped ( Talking about william )

THAT'S IT, I figured it all out. With the confirmation of Mako, I can confirm that the entire Inou Battle series is a dream Mako is having during one of her many sleep sessions in class.
All the Kill La Kill references hint at this such as the tennis racket and the boxing gloves. It plays out Mako's real life wish, that of making friends, but because it's Mako it can't be normal. So Mako inserts super powers to spice things up and being a reflection of the super powers in her everyday life. She makes the lead annoying to obviously mimic how annoying her little brother is. Inou Battle even displays a perfect older sister for comparison. All of this is a complex dream she has to pass away the time.

She's even shown in water in the 2nd KLK ED, just as in her sequence in Inou Battle.
You think I'm wrong? Prove it.

That's awesome. You should check out the OVA (had a region 1 release) and the manga. Nothing like completely off-the-walls gritty 70s yo-yo action. Series is crazy.

Yeesh, I didn't know people despised Saber this much. I mean, I think her design is (blonde, virgin, etc.) is pretty hilarious and her motivations are kind of dumb but she was always kind of whatever. I'm don't know much about that kind of history but wasn't Britain conquered by outsiders after her rule? I could understand her wanting to prevent that from happening, regardless of the current state of the UK.

What episode is the classroom scene from?

For what it's worth I like Saber based upon F/Z and what has currently aired in F/SN. The only real issue I have with her across what I've seen is that Shirou for no reason seems to have out of nowhere romantic feelings for her (which I assume is because she's the main romance option in the first route you have to play in the game) but that's more his fault then hers. Then again perhaps later F/SN UBW or playing F/SN the game may change my opinion on her. The whole blond/virgin thing never even crossed my mind then again if someone said "pick your waifu F/SN style go" she would be at the bottom of my list not because she isn't attractive but because her stoic chivalry knight personality isn't what I'd call grade a waifu material FWIW.

Seven Deadly Sins 1

So this is basically Fairy Tail but with a female lead who's completely inept and seemingly has no problem with being groped by the random stranger she just met who happens to be the guy she's looking for, and a male lead who's basically Natsu but isn't afraid to grab some boobage if he can. It's decent enough that I'll continue with it but it didn't really blow me away, might be a series I pick up in manga form and check out the anime later on down the line as I feel some of the awkwardness of the groping scenes wouldn't be as bad in manga form.

Gundam: Reconguista in G 11:
The long awaited return of GENIUS KLIM NICK! That alone seals this as an amazing episode, before we even get to the incredible space battle. Also, tying Raraiya up with a rope because why not?

There are so many different factions at work right now that I'm expecting every episode to introduce yet another splinter group for the rest of the way through the show. As expected of Tomino. I feel like he set out to create the most Tomino show possible, and he's succeeding. Is it a coincidence that anime died during the years that Tomino wasn't making anime?

Why does everyone in fate/zero speak Japanese?

The only people who needed to learn it are Irisviel, Maiya, Kayneth, Sola-Ui, and Waver and they all seem like capable people.

Irisviel & Maiya = Learned from Kerry
Kayneth, Sola-Ui, and Waver = Learned it in prep for the war

I'm watching and really digging it, it's a comfy shonen battle series. Also it has one of the better jobs I've heard from Sawano.

Well she is very popular so of course shes hated by a minority group. par for the course. See also Asuna and Onodera Kosaki.

In the VN Shirou basically thinks "holy crap this is the most beautiful girl I've ever seen in my entire life." This being anime everyone looks really pretty so it isn't really clear. Beyond being a beautiful pure virgin girl she's also extremely devoted, even when Shirou appears to be nothing more than a sexist twat and an idiot (Fate route Shirou is infamously sexist).

Celestial Method 10

More and more, it feels like they're dragging out the drama just to pad out the episode count. Starting to feel weary watching this.

Because if they don't then you get Black Lagoon which has scenes in Thailand but everyone speaks Japanese and I'm pretty sure Revy doesn't even know Japanese so she will randomly switch from Japanese to English and nobody wants that. Plus I think Rock speaks everything they encounter.

Basically just this

I came here to say that I want more Revy engrish so this point is invalid, assuming the italics aren't meant as ironic. Which if they are, then agreed.

excellent post but you forgot about
the wheelchair kid being able to walk again thanks to the power of his brothers YOYO skillz

Oh yeah I did forget to mention that. I will say it reminded me of that old vampire hunter in Dracula: Sovereign of the Damned. In that
he was fine all along and it just took a little encouragement for him to get up from the wheelchair.

Someone took great joy in making certain the audience saw up Fake Sailor Moon's skirt this episode. Presumably giggling the whole way through the revelation that it was Zoisite.

Meanwhile Queen Beryl took one look at Mamoru and wanted the D so bad she called off the much anticipated execution of Zoisite.

Cross Ange 10

I just want to get this out of the way first.

I called it.

I CALLED IT.

Like, the minute Hilda took over from Zola I knew they were going to keep the chain going. Who knows, maybe next week when Chris dies or whatever, then Rosalie can buy Zola's stuff and sex up Hilda so it goes full circle.

Ahem...I've said this before, but confrontations in Cross Ange are at their best when it doesn't involve the mechs. Ange and Momoka running around shooting people/running? I'm all about that. Far better than the DRAGON battles. It seems like Ange and Hilda have decided Row row, fight da power? I wonder if they'll actually go for it. In the mean time, everyone should look forward to next week's episode when the girl's plot to commit mass genocide while participating in a talent show.

Kinmoza FINAL THOUGHTS

So, this show is amazing, let's get this out of the way right away. OP is good, ED is incredible and jazzy. Everything is incredibly cute, the characters are all lovable and the humor is wonderful. And the Engrish, oh my god the Engrish! And then there's the finale, which I won't spoil here, but it is the single best episode of anime this side of Gurren Lagann! If you can stomach the cute, WATCH THIS SHOW! It's on sale at RightStuf right now for $24 ($20 for DVD)!

Special shoutout to Woofdawg, who I'm sure would love this if he hasn't seen it already.
