Since Chun-li is already a lock, all I need is Karin, Sakura, and Cammy. Juri too.

Juri. She's the only character I'm into; otherwise, I'll probably end up playing as Ryu.

Seeing as how concept art of Rufus was posted (And I think he looks better), I would've liked it more if capcom went with this concept they had of Juri.

I love this outfit so much, if by some chance Juri doesn't make it in I want Sakura to have it. Grown up Sakura let's gooooooooo!

Did you guys know that the number one most requested character for SFV
by me
is Linn Kurosawa?

At that to the list of facts for SF on did you know gaming!

Also check her out in Alpha 2's background!

Its really gonna depend with where they want to start on the canon. If its post 3rd strike then you can go in some interesting directions with the roster like Ryu being trained by Oro, having a new final boss, Akuma being a little older, etc. I would assume a 50/50 split between old and new characters.

If the game takes place before 3rd strike, you may almost be looking at a roster retread, maybe 25 percent new characters, but more of the same and more characters from 3rd strike and Final Fight.

Personally Im hoping for a new direction. Sure, I want the main shotos and all, but the new gameplay ideas can give a lot of room for new characters and with SF IV releasing on PS4, theres a way for anybody to play a Street Fighter game with a large cast of returning characters.

After Ultra Street Fighter IV had essentially every returning character worth a damn I think it would be wise to go with a mostly new cast this time around, to help it stand out from IV. Not on III's absurd "Everyone but the shotos and Chun Li are out" but maybe not have the entire SFII cast back.

The cast of Championship edition needs to be present, just like it was in SF4. (I'd be ok with removing Honda) so that leaves us with 4-5 slots that should obviously be filled with completely new characters.

Then one brand new Boss, because that's the tradition for mainline titles, bringing the total to 17, plus maybe Akuma, which would make 18.

There is really not much room for speculation here, except about which countries should the 4 new characters be from, and what styles of fighting should they employ.

I'm going to say a middle eastern country, a south american one, an african country and maybe the US to close.

I hope they don't play it safe. I'd go for 6-8 returning and 8-10 new.

It's all fun and games until your main gets cut lol.

Fighting Game casts are serious buisness.

Once a character someone doesn't like get added (and this will happen..they all can't be winners) and a character they do like is "cut"..arguments of slots being wasted and such will pop up.

I do not envy Capcom.

I do think SF3 did it the right way by almost getting each character archeotype filled (i.e Grapplers, charge, and the like), so if some classics are missing, hopefully their playstyles aren't missing too. The problem was that a lot of SF3's cast was a bunch of weird motherfuckers (cool IMO but weird) that didn't appeal to a lot of people IIRC.

I think Ryu, Chun, Ken (pls), Akuma are obvious locks. I'd put Guile (idk to see the end of his story?...but mainly for his theme) and Gief as well. Sagat and Bison fill in some good blanks too. I hate him but Blanka too (of course i think Dan and Sakura would have to come along too). Sim, Honda, Hawk, Fei probably don't have a chance. Cammy is a wildcard. Guy and Cody probably gets the axe. Alex will probably make a reappearance...not sure about the rest of the SF3 cast. I imagine at least 1-2 of the SFIV new dudes will return (Juri and Abel have plot relevance. Viper was popular enough to get into Marvel.)

so if the 16 character thing is true (I'd like 20), It would look similar to this.
Ryu
Ken
Chun
Akuma (secret Boss again?)
Bison (it would be weird if he makes it and Rog and Vega does not tho)
Guile/Gief
Cammy
Alex
Juri
Abel or Viper
Yun
Yang (easy to add plus it looks like their stage)
Grappler or Charge (depends on who between Guile and Gief gets in)
Rekka
Stretch and Shit
Probably a New Shoto because fuck you that's why.

Not gonna lie, I hope most of the sf2 characters are abandoned since sf4 was kinda the sf2 revival. SF5 is hopefully looking to the future aka Sf3. Im hoping for a ton from third strikes cast and only a few oldies.

Agreed.

Quite frankly, there are a couple of stinkers on the SFII roster that really shouldn't be prioritized for this game.

you know I wonder...with all the fond memories people have of Third Strike....why was it such a failure?

Because Next Generation was horrible, Second Impact was less horrible. 3s was the first "good" version of SF3 (imo).
It played completely different from any SF before it
Arcades were dying (in america)
Alpha 3 was far more popular and came out around the same time
It had no characters anybody cared about other than Ryu and Ken

I remember reading somewhere that she's in some weird ass limbo where Capcom actually does own the character, but can't really use her in anything outside of minute cameos.

Considering all the weirdness capcom gets into with characters they don't actually own.

I believe that.

They can't use any of the EX characters I think, all these characters gone.

All twelve dolls. Do it Capcom! Do It! Do It! (Seriously though --no more shotos, dolls, or clone characters)

I'm hoping these characters make it in:

Juri
Hakan
Remy
Q
Powered Akira / Daigo Kazama / Zaki (rival schools)
Skullomania / Shadow Geist inspired new character (SF ex)
Hokuto inspired new character (SF ex)

And how bout changing/updating the returning characters age and attire. I know the costumes are iconic and all, but how about mixing it up a little. Maybe have Ryu go through some mid-life crisis so he goes to a laundromat to have his clothes washed; and Zangief puts on some pants and a vest; and Juri gets her eyebrows redone... you know, little tweaks to show some character development.

Glad to see a lot of this thread really wants Juri and Q.
I'm pretty confident Juri will be back. She seems to be the most popular character wise out of the newcomers in SF4.

I see.

BTW I wasn't dissing 3rd strike...I'm awful at it but it is really fun. Just was wondering why people are so found of it and yet it failed.

i now know

Online play wasn't a big deal for fighters on the DC and PS2, lol. Especially when 3s came out.

3s came out in 97, a couple years before the DC. :p
The Dreamcast and PS2 versions came out after the Dreamcast, though, both of which are online capable systems while arcade machines typically aren't. I wouldn't be surprised if games like Counter-Strike and Q3 took over as multiplayer games and that's what killed the fighting fad for awhile. I can't help but wonder what would've happened if fighting games had online alongside the first FPS games that did. Shoot, I'd say the popularity of GGPO is a testament to that.

I'll definitely agree that no online isn't nearly a damning bullet point as being 2D. In fact, the game didn't really fail; the Anniversary Collection sold really well
for a 2D fighting game.

Basically yes. This is my point of view as well.

I know I'm probably in the minority as far as GAF goes, but I really did not like the 3S roster. While I would occasionally dabble with most characters from SSF2T, I just cannot get into most of the characters in 3S. I did like Remy, Yun, and Yang though. And Urien was pretty cool even if I wasn't a fan of his playstyle. I did, however, love the parry system and wish that Capcom would bring it back.

Most of the characters I'd want to return are definitely from the 2nd and 4th installments of the game.

I guess only time will tell... doesn't 16 seem relatively low for a starting roster size for this entry in the series?

Most fighting games that start off on a new engine have a low roster. Even when Street Fighter IV first hit arcades it only had 17 PLAYABLE characters. Seth and Gouken were NPCs.

We need Alex and more female characters in this game, 50/50 sounds good.

Screw Deejay and Honda, its not like anyone plays them. Kappa

Aw, they can't reuse animations from SFIV to pad out the roster?

This is a misconception; the game literally only has maybe two real "freaks"; I don't consider Oro a freak, Q's design is actually pretty neat and normal by comparison and Urien wearing a speedo isn't too out-of-place now that you've got characters like Juri with whatever you call those pants showing off her butt.

Just two...in a cast of many non-freaks.

No they don't, SF4 was sort of a reboot/going back to the basics thing which is why they used all SF2 characters from the starts. That is not the case with this game and the original 8(or 12) characters are far from the best characters they have.
