Street Fighter V Roster Discussion: P-P-P-P-PATTERN BREAKER

I like your list except for c. Viper. I always felt viper was an sf3 character design, I think she and juri are the only two characters who will survive sf4.

Ha, I didn't even realize until now that I cut all of the sf4 characters except Juri. I dont really hate Viper's appearance, but I hate the way she plays. In fact, pretty much all the new sf4 characters eschewed traditional footsie and spacing based fighting for unfun gimmicks.

Edit: Oh right, there's also Gouken. Fine to keep him.

Bison definately should come back but in a new slimmer body. Psycho Power is eternal, I'd love to see him work with urien.

As much as I like Bison I still disagree. He's been in enough games and let's see some new blood. Or maybe Gill comes back and he's playable and balanced?

There will be a new big bad but bison would be in the background slowly gaining power. Adds a lot to the story IMO.

I actually dig the luchador thing El Fuerte's got going, but he could stand to have a better ring name and the chef gimmick was a bit much.

Hey, that's another reason for Gill to be the villain again. It gives Capcom the chance to save on development costs and include him and Urien.

Capcom devs haven't been able to watch any new anime or read any new manga since the 90s, which is why we won't have any new main villains besides ones looking like Yasunori Kato or Cars. Though I suppose since Seth looks like Dr. Manhattan maybe someone watched Watchmen.

Because the SF1 versions are neither memorable nor the definitive versions of those characters. And in Birdie's case he got drastically redesigned to the point he's not the same character anymore. And because you only played as Ryu (and Ken, sort of).
No offense but I don't want any KLK in my Street Fighter. SF char design-when done right-is a very precarious thing.

And most of the iconic designs actually came from Asian kung-fu flicks, not anime. Ryu for example was based on a a kyokushin-kaikan karate master whose name I unfortunately forget :S.

Chun belongs to Cammy.
No amigo that would be Poison ;)

Also with all this Sean talk...if this takes place after III I'd love for Sean to come back sort of taking Akuma's role, all pissed at how Ken let him suck so bad in 3S, and Mel coming in as the Ryu counterpart.

Or just something to get a rivalry btwn Sean and Mel to hint at them being the next Ryu and Ken.

Ryu is based off Yoshiji Soeno and partly his master Mas Oyama from whom the training under a waterfall originates:

[...]as the Ryu character is based on the real life events of Yoshiji Soeno, who was a practitioner of Kyokushinkai karate under Mas Oyama, the traditional Kyokushinkai techniques can be clearly seen in the character's fighting style.
And Kyokushin is correct, too, not Shotokan which the American SF2 manual incorrectly stated (Makoto's Rindoukan is basically Shotokan).
I know Ansatsuken is the name of their fictitious style but the normal moves are based off Kyokushin. Btw., Ansatsuken seems to be more a fighting philosophy than a style since Gen's fighting style is also called Ansatsuken though he clearly does crane and mantis Kung Fu.

I've never watched Kill la Kill so I wouldn't know.

And the character designs are from all over the place, but manga/anime is one of the main sources. Guile/Rose/Urien/Gill/Seth/Juri are all based on JoJo characters, while for example Cammy is inspired by Alita/Gally from Battle Angel Alita.

Blanka is also similar to one boxer of Ashita no Joe, both in voice and character and even the rolling attack. That boxer lived in the jungle of the philippines, not brazil.

You're basically describing Toshinden 4. The main characters' sons and daughters became the main cast, and the previous main character became the secret legendary badass hiding in the shadows.

I tried so hard to forget about Toshinden Subaru. Painful memories have returned.

This is some new stuff to me. I'm familiar w/ JoJo but the only two of those you listed I can think of as being JoJo-inspired are Urien and certainly Gill (Cars). I don't know who Guile/Rose/Seth/Juri are supposed to be inspired by tho.

Also did not know Cammy was inspired by Yohko/Gally. That's pretty awesome; I love that OVA and enjoy the manga (if anyone's wondering they started publishing the new series Martian War Chronicles in Japan around last month; hopefully it gets licensed).

Ah, that's his name! Thanks.

I think that name was mentioned in the SF design blogs BigMex had on 1Up some time ago. I think they're still up there, too. More than worth the read ;)

Rose - JoJo's mother in JoJo 2
Guile - Army dude that had same hair style in JoJo 1. He become cyborg at end of the manga.
Juri - it's possibly that she could be based on psycho girl in JoJo 6

It's just my assumption tho.

Juri is based on Joleyne, the protagonist of part 6. Rose is Lisa Lisa, and Guile is Stroheim. Seth is similarly to Gill and Urien based on the villains of part 2, the Pillar Men. Seth is probably more inspired by Wham than Cars, who has a similar wind-based attack, with his looks probably based off of Dr. Manhattan. Coincidentally enough they're both voiced by Akio Ohtsuka.

Fun fact, Cammy's cat alt is based on Alita's Imaginos 2.0 body.

Wow, I didn't know street fighter was inspired by anime. I guess it make sense.
So, Does that mean the Hadouken was really inspired by dragonball?

Nope, it was based on Space Battle Ship Yamato, IIRC it had a weapon that would charge up and fire an energy blast which inspired the Haduken.

Capcom were super nerds, yo. Most of their arcade games were based on comic books, action movies, kung fu cinema and D&D.

^Oh, god, you're right.

Your comment completely changed, lol

I know, it sucked and it was rather hostile in retrospect. Not trying to hide anything, I just changed my mind. I should spend a couple more minutes before I post, I think.

Well, I expect Karin's chances of finally being brought back to be about as likely Capcom reviving Mega Man at this point. I wouldn't mind seeing them bring back Ingrid, as that would likely be preferable to most of the new additions they have in mind (going by SFIV's track record), and I could enjoy caterwauling the likes of which would make the response to Lucky Chloe look tame.
Not sorry.

Karin can easily come back, since she's in the same spot as Strider. Which had worked out with no problems. It all depends on Ono, which he even stated that he could have gotten her but was too Lazy to do so.

Is she really? A genuine question on my part actually, as some seem to be under this impression, yet unlike anything Strider appears in, the two games where she shows up don't have separate copyright information. Most seem to assume this because her creator didn't originally work for Capcom.

I guess Karin can come back....I guess. TBT I want more "serious" fighters with 100% solid designs, not stuff like Rufus or Fuerte. Especially Rufus, tho. Jeez did he ever suck.

Karin's at that weird "is she, isn't she?" age. She doesn't look serious enough as a fighter but looks too child-like innocent for me to find sexually appealing. Kind of like Sakura I'd guess. At least with a character like Chun or Cammy, they not only look like fighters but they're also adults, so I feel comfortable saying they're hot.. Or Viper and to a lesser extent Juri; they don't really look like fighters to me but they still serve good eye-candy.

I guess if it were the other way around, it'd be like putting Mel in while he's 12 or something. I can't buy a 12-year old beating up Akuma, and he's way too young to be sexy to an adult.

Also thanks IntelliHeath and Sesha for that info; been forever since me reading JoJo, but the name Stroheim does ring a bell. I didn't think that series would have such a big influence tho.

I wonder if Ono or Diago are YuYu Hakusho fans ;)....

This irritates the shit out of me. Come on Ono. :/

I'd like Q.

I'd like Karin, and I'd like her and Sakura to have grown up a bit.
Sailor fuku outfits can be DLC or something, let them graduate pls

And... Juri, Poison, Ibuki, Dudley, Makoto.

(assuming the originals plus shadowloo & cammy are returning)

If anything Capcom basing their designs on older anime and manga can't be a bad thing. If they only based it on current stuff we'd end up with a plethora of characters like Lucky Chloe.

I could see it inspiring the name, but the Hado Ho was a giant space laser that didn't look much like the hadoken and I find it difficult to believe that a group of borderline plagiarists like the SF team developed the Hadoken stance independently of Dragon Ball.

Isn't Karin's family like stupid rich?

She has the best tutors on the world! Of course she could fight! Also something about a stuck up bitch turns me on. Hope she's in the game.

So I heard we are going to hear more details about SFV in the Capcom Cup event. Is this true, if so how many hours until the event.

Damn. Where and what time is this supposed to kick off. I fell like it's going to be Sunday before we hear anything.

It's in San Francisco. The "Special Announcements" occur at the end of the event, which is 10:15 Eastern Time. That's where SFV will most likely be shown.

I doubt that they will show another character. It'll probably be just Ryu and Chun-Li going at it with a breakdown of what the mechanics are or could be.

Yeah, they mentioned it. I think it wouldn't shown until 10:30PM (EST) or something like that.

I wish for one more character but I can imagine that it's too much to ask for.
