DSFix 2.3 taken down after DMCA complaint [Up: Was mistake; being resolved]

This is total bullshit. I'd love to know how your fix is copyright infringement as well.

Also interesting that it's rhe German branch that filed the complaint.

Typical big Japanese gaming company. Only comes out of hiding to announce product or do the unexplainable. Edit: the plot thickens. Japan branch not responsible for this? That's almost backwards.

I hope you win this, Durante.

DSFix is not only how I found Neogaf, it's the sole reason Dark Souls has a presence on PC. Without it they would have sold no more than 1000 copies of that crap port. Bandai's entire profit from Dark Souls PC is 100% thanks to Durante's free gift. They certainly wouldn't have had Dark Souls 2 PC and it helped lift the brand on all platforms.

How out of touch can they be? They think DS PC sales would have skyrocketed without DSFix? It would have bombed in a couple days if Durante didn't fix it out the door.

What's your plan now? There doesn't seem to be an intelligent instance that is checking if these complaints are valid, pretty much wild west, just a kill switch for companies.
Are you going to try it again with another hosting site?

On what grounds would they even file a DMCA claim for this? DSFix doesn't contain any copyrighted content from Dark Souls at all, it's a generic DirectX interceptor that's been shown to work with several other games without any modification. The only part that might not be completely external to Dark Souls is the framerate unlock, IIRC.

So good at fixing broke-ass PC ports that his work has actually been declared illegal.

That is plain stupid.

You fixed a broken port for free and got them many sales.

This looks like a shit-job by an overzealous lawyer at namco.

Expecting backpedaling in the coming days.

Sigh. This is another great example of how worthless legal departments typically are for copyrighted-material companies -- unless someone actively babysits them, they'll just randomly do idiotic shit like this to prove that they're getting paid for a reason.

I would harangue the BandaiNamcoEU twitter account, but it looks like they only have, like, 700 followers?

Yup. I remember the pre-release topics here of people not being able to believe it was limited to 720p. People thinking it was a translation error or that they just limited the res on promo shots. Then it actually came out like that and it was laughable until Durante fixed it in like a few hours or something.

Anyone you can tweet at FROM about this? It's concerning that dropbox assumes by default that its users are criminals, without any burden of proof whatsoever on the party claiming infringement. Really, this whole situation just doesn't make sense; I'm hoping it's some weird misunderstanding.

I am going to assume this was some automated process gone wrong, but if it turns out otherwise that is a pretty stupid thing for them to have done.

The law is set up to encourage things like this sadly.

What a terrible company. Yes, I understand legal divisions can have floating "objectives," and that's probably how this got caught up and reported; that doesn't excuse an imbecilic, detrimental result of that process.

Hopefully this gets resolved quickly, otherwise Namco is tripping on some of the good will they've built up recently.

Do BN not want people to play their game? The increased clarity from DSFix makes it much more hauntingly beautiful, and we can actually see the damn fine textures.

Only thing I can think of (and this is a stretch) is that they're actually fixing DS themselves with a patch since they did just move the game of GFWL.

That's what I don't get.
My only guess is that they plan to sell a remastered version of the original DS on PC and consoles, and an already existing, better playing/performing version of the game might steal some of the value of that release. Similarly, the original versions of Deus Ex and Sleeping Dogs have been removed from storefronts after the "remasters" (in some instances they actually perform worse than the originals) were released.

Just wanted to say that I wouldn't buy DS1, like many others, if it weren't for DSFix.
Thank you Durante for your great work with the fix and I hope Scamco realizes what you've done to their favour soon.

Durante just needs to file the counter notification.

Then, if he's feeling salty, he can countersue for damages for filing a false DMCA claim.

It sounds like the counter claim should be filed, and if that fails, then open the gates of hell on Twitter.

Edit: On a wider note this is disturbing. Copy right claims on mods. I've heard of a few other cases like Tecmo but this one seems really frivolous.
