NPD Sales Results for December 2014 [Up2: Nintendo Sales Notes]

I don't understand markets I guess. I guess the lack of hype killed sales.

Also isn't Forza really popular? Is it because it's not a game in the main series?

Forza is arguably the most inflated sales franchise in MS's exclusive lineup.

It's not a poor seller, but its sales are also largely inflated with the mainline series being heavily bundled.

even considering that Europe likes racing games a lot better (and it seems to be doing decently there), Driveclub is a special tier of suck in the US

Yeah there's no way around that. Maybe even biggest bomb this year? I mean it was one of the titles announced with the PS4. To total less than 100k.......man just brutal

Can we please get 3DS numbers? Anyone? Or even just a clue to how much it did. After seeing that pie chart with Vita, I'm kinda worried...

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
And the race youve all been waiting for...

The Crew debuts more than 40% higher than Forza's debut. Drive Club is barely a blip

End of the year in LtD though Forza's was #1 with like 510k or so but that's a couple more months

Consider the difference in install base and demographic differences.
Yeh. We should be glad we even got the game thanks to Nintendo. But that is probably the last of the franchise
Unless it goes multiplatform

That pie chart shows 3DS (Pacman) literally eating the hell out of poor Vita and you... are... worried? What?

Damn, FH2, SO, and LB3 sales are really low... they all deserved better than this :(

Forza has never been *really* popular. And the first Horizon didn't exactly light the charts on fire either. It's no surprise that 2 bombed.

Driveclub is doing well in the UK due to bundles and is doing alright in Germany(100k LTD). I haven't really seen it chart much elsewhere other than AU/NZ.

Sunset Overdrive seems like a bomba. It's not doing well in Europe like FH2 either.

Wow those Bayonetta 2 numbers are terrible.

It certainly gives it worth to the line-up though as its ESRB rating (as others obviously) and type of game can appeal to anyone and makes it easy to offer in bundles. Not sure how Forza will do this gen though with XB1 doing pretty poorly in Europe.

Decent numbers all round. I'm guessing the Dec NPD numbers are indicating Nov closed more of the gap between X1 and PS4 for MS than Dec managed. Curious to see how much an impact the post Xmas price drop will have in Jan. Anyway it shows console gaming is good and strong right now.

PS4 managed to stay pretty competitive this month HW wise, no Nov. style wallop. This year will be very interesting with strong software starting to roll on PS4, but price advantage gone.

Do we have any idea about Ubi expectations for The crew? Was this good or bad for them?

It didn't do well multiplatform. At all. That's the whole point. It tanked on a much larger install base with demographics that should have been more receptive than family audiences

Well, the leaderboards on DC are up around the 1m mark so either it only sold 8.4% of that number in the US, or there were a lot of copies sold digitally, which you can't count because NPD doesn't cover them.

Way too much for that craptastic effort.

My 6 y/o nephew wanted Sonic Boom Wii U for his birthday. I was considering vetoing it and getting him something different, but I decided not to on the account that he's a kid and doesn't really know a "good" game from a "bad" one. I sure hope I don't regret my decision...

I thought The Crew could pull it out but it just got dominated by DC. Daaaaaamn.

So only 280k for Sunset Overdrive, maybe 100K more with the bundle, maybe 20% more with digital sales. 450k at best, what are you doing XBox owners?

Yeah I still expect PS4 to lead most of the 1st half of this year if not all. Though MS did make things interesting with the price drop and it will certainly be much closer than it would have been.

Mainline Forza is much more popular than Horizon, but the numbers are inflated due to bundling. Here are the leaderboard numbers for Forza 2-4 as of May 2013:

Was playing some Forza 4 today again, after a very long while, and decided to check the number of players on the leaderboards of the Forza games:

Forza 2: 3.3 million players
Forza 3: 5.9 million players
Forza 4: 4.6 million players

bayo 1 did 200k in the us on the 360 after 18 months. it did 150k on the ps3 in that same time. a year from now. 135k after three months isn't that bad.

That... Actually puts it into perspective a little bit better. Ninjablade can cancel his smile

Well Wikipedia failed me again....

Interesting to see if MS has any surprise first party exclusives in Q1-Q2, although it seems that first party games are not exactly selling well for either platform.

They have a few cool indie exclusives, Evolve & Witcher partnership.

I thought 300k gap would be low difference gap for XBO and PS4 in December, so it seems if the numbers split range is correct that it's probably under that gap by some amount. So I think this shows the contraction is going to be especially large starting from January, even above the average prediction. I bet the numbers therefore are going to be positively dire for Microsoft's next few months, even compared to how bad console numbers relatively are for this time of year.

If the gap was 400k, and the gap December is 250k or less, that means altogether they cut 700k gap maximum, and that's gonna start to be rolled back now.

Very interesting strategic choices ahead for both companies. I wonder what Microsoft's next strategic salvo is for 2015. Sony's got their price cut still to do, and thus a huge boost in their cards. I bet Microsoft no doubt has a Halo 5 bundle in the cards for Fall, and that'll likely cushion their numbers quite a bit for at least one month. Quantum Break is a wild card, and I think Tomb Raider is going to be fascinating to watch for a number of reasons - one because I hope the entire series dies after the TR2013 abomination so I hope there's real damage to the brand due to the SE deal, but two because it'll be interesting to see how much draw it can have considering the series history. Is it going to have any significant crossover with a brand previously so associated with PS? Or will it do normal numbers?

But what can Microsoft do to make their system especially enticing for year end? Because if their strategy going forward is to give most of the year away and then earn back a huge chunk during Holidays, they're going to need some legendary deals considering Sony's strategic reservations (they have more cards left to play) and their big game year ahead. It's not going to be similar to 2014's year end AAA emptiness, to say the least.

Fun times ahead.

It's good to see that the Wii U is starting to turn around. If only it had this momentum from the beginning.

The turn around to still not have any conceivable chance at hitting GCN numbers, which Iwata said would be a failure in the past. "Turn around" is a very liberally used phrase these days ;)

I'm also interested in the FF games that were out this year. Namely if FFX HD maintained its lead over LR.
+1

We had the following FF games last year.

FF XIV: ARR PS4
FF X|X-2 HD PS3/PSV
Lightning Returns: FF XIII PS3/X360

Would love to get an update on the LTD of these games.

bayo 1 did 200k in the us on the 360 after 18 months. it did 150k on the ps3 in that same time. 135k after three months isn't that bad.
The numbers were much better in Japan on PS3 and X360 AFAIK. Bayo 2 didn't really do anything in Japan.

LTD in Japan
206k PS3
111k X360

Compared to Bayo 2
51k Wii U (Last known figure)

This is very true, but MS also made a huge mistake not making more white consoles, it seems to have sold out very quickly in the US, whether that was for SO or the white itself is another thing.

They did do a lot of advertising for it though. Im hoping MS will bundle it at some point.

Betting that Driveclub did better digitally given the $10 discount for Plus subs.

Might turn more sales if the Plus Edition ever drops as well.

Their servers melted down over that amount of traffic? No wonder we haven't see a PS+ version yet.

Yeah, that's kind of fucked up. At least, with MCC, it around a million dealing with busted public matchmaking, not that it excuses that game's problems or MS/343 similarly fucking up like Sony/Evolution did.

Sad about SO and FH2 doing so low. Oh well, this is the early part of the generation where there isn't anywhere near a large number of potential fans to sell to yet, though it disappoints just how much the supposedly core crowd sticks so closely to the yearly safe bets. And, now, maybe people can stop pointing to Titanfall being a bomb when they look at how poorly many other AAA games have fared by comparison.
