NPD Sales Results for December 2014 [Up2: Nintendo Sales Notes]

Reading what posted in the past few hours, it seems that Captain Toad did fantastic. It had a better NPD debut than 3D World (215,000)! Of course, it's 9 days v.s. 4 full weeks (it came out on December 5th), but I was expecting more like 150,000. Definitely impressed, the budget price did wonders. Pretty good for KH2.5HD and...surprisingly The Crew. How the heck did The Crew sell more than 300,000 units, HOW.

Also, going with retail ranges for SSB 3DS and MK8 and comparing them with NoA's PR numbers, we have

MK8 digital sales - > 200,000
SSB 3DS digital sales - < 300,000

In the case retail numbers are near to the posted numbers, digital numbers shouldn't be that far off the ones just posted as well.

Nintendo's not doing to too bad with their digital front, and indies are seemingly finding a home, but they have a lot of work ahead of them on that front. When you have figures like this but also 7k+ figures for titles like Bayo2... you know something is really amiss.

I wonder if Kirby's budget price won't find it reaching similar, if not possibly higher, figures in its first month of NPD. Kirby is a decently strong brand in NA, and we've seen pretty good figures come out of Deluxe on the 3DS.

Anyway, that's surprisingly high for Vita. Like it's 5th best month, third best excluding launch period.

New model and the bundle, opens up a lot of double-dip opportunity for the already existing base. Good source of a bump, and the bundle was also likely a good entry point for some new comers to the handheld.

You make good points, but when the margin is big between them in both November and December, don't you think that should concern Sony?

They are the biggest months of the year gaming-wise after all.

The question isn't concern, (of course they are concerned), the question is how you react to it.

I don't know about you guys but 3DS had freaking Smash Bros and Pokemon going into the holidays. Why were people expecting decline? This was better than last year in term of software.

Not really, since Sony does have the rest of the world on lock. Sony's goal with the PS4 in the US isn't to win, but to keep Xbox One from having a large enough lead that it counteracts PS4's lead in the rest of the world.

They do now, I'm just guessing if this trend continues the roles will reverse if this trend starts happening worldwide. I haven't been following worldwide sales much, but isn't the Xbox One closing in fast in many regions excluding Japan?

Sony just sold a million consoles without a price drop in NA. I think they are more than happy with that. They need to make money, not win NPD bragging rights.

So do you think selling healthy numbers is the priority over leading the competition? That's a good point as well as I wonder if Xbox One is selling at a loss.

Pokemon was a remake and mostly people assumed they would already bought the 3DS for X & Y.

Pretty healthy holiday season overall =). Even the Vita got a boost =).

Can we just get a last gen # pretty please? It's not too important anyways... I'm tired of doing approximate math xD

Microsoft also had a temporary price cut and some pretty aggressive bundles. It was, essentially, an extended Black Friday promotion and I don't see why Sony should throw their long term profit and sales projections down the toilet to match what was a temporary act of desperation.

If the trend continues through January and February now that the price has gone back up then, yeah, Sony will have to react. But as it stands they had a good Nov+Dec doing absolutely nothing.

Huh?? But ps4 has a larger install base. Why is xbone aelling more multiplat games?

Dont get it

Because there are a ton more XB1 gamers than there were before November, and the vast majority of PlayStation and Xbox gamers are people only interested in multiplatform games. To these people, they only need either a PlayStation or an Xbox and some just got an Xbox with a good amount of games for $350.

In fact, I would probably put myself in the camp of not caring about if I own a PlayStation or an Xbox if it weren't for the fact that Street Fighter 5 is an exclusive, so I will have to go with PS4. Conversely, I also care about Tomb Raider, but not as much as I care about Street Fighter.

The 3DS is now... four years old.

Huh...? It did decline.
I wasn't really talking about it selling 1 million like last year. But people were predicting lower sales overall.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Oh, yeah. Was mesmerizing to watch the innertube's duck's face instead of his for the reactions.

lol

On a side note donny, I'm speaking directly to you so that shinra doesn't see me, mind bringing my 3DS predictions a bit upwards to around 810 :p

don't tell him though. it's our secret

Nope, maybe UK or Brazil.

The price has gone back down already though, Microsoft is doing a good job of being aggressive. But like you said, it could be better for Sony to wait rather than throw their long term profit and sales projections out the window.

I know the Vita numbers are still horrible but I love how we go from obviously lowballed posts like these to probably over 100k.

The Vita sold 95K last December and like 90K that November, so I can see why people were down on it. 20K in the holidays would be ridiculous (given it did that on non-holiday months when it was stocked), but 50-70K wouldn't have been completely unbelievable.

Hey Donnie, are you the man woth the graphs?? Can u post any Line graphs showing LTD, monthly sales for all current gen consoles??

TerryTravis does a good, big one, but it usually shows up in a few days. Here's Road's from earlier in the thread.

npd-home-14z3u83.png

After 14 months:

Wii: 7.4m
PS4: 6.7m
XBO: 6.2m
PS2: 5.3m

Next month, the PS2 (at 7.3m) will finally cross streams with the PS4 (and the Xbox One again).

PS2 holds the record for home consoles* second December for at least another generation with 1.95 million. Wii did 1.35m.

*Overall best second December is GBA with 2.1m.

Without holiday & launch sales these two hardly sell a thing for 10months of a year.

I lowered mine from 800K to 750K shortly before the deadline. Also changed XB1/PS4, but altogether, it was probably a wash.

Sub 20k is too low for the holidays as you said. Lower than 5 digits would be 9999 max.

I expected nothing more than 50k myself, it is just sad that some people have to exaggerate so much for the sake of trolling.

Really? I completely missed that!

The point still stands though. It's not like they were completely destroyed over Christmas and they could react pretty quickly if they needed to. What they don't want to do is get into a race to the bottom where they devalue the console so badly, piss all their profits away that all it would take is the right Xbone exclusive and they'd never recover.

why worry losing 600-ish K from your US lead if the rest of the world you tosses in 2-4 (example number only, not saying that's factual) times that?

Lol, I think the Vita actually sold more in the US than Japan this December... I didn't think that was possible...

US Vita/TV = 150K
JP Media Create = Dec 1 - Dec 28th = 1,168,570 - 1042,924 = 125K

Sure I'm leaving out the 29-31st, but it's hard to tell how much of week 1's 58K was before 1/1 (that's I think when most of the folks buy systems, like on New Year's day itself in JP).

So we're only predicting a 100k difference in hardware?

That......is.......not a big difference at all, especially with the price cut :/

If that 100k difference is true, consider me to be in a shock. After those massive (and I might actually put it lightly with that) bundles and the price cut.

I think it is less about the sales of Vita and more about how SCEA is treating it. I mean they didn't even bother with any bundles for it for the holidays. All we had was the Standalone Vita 2000 and the May-released Borderlands 2 Vita bundle. I don't remember any other bundle on sale during these holidays.

shinra might have the upper hand

I'm sure he's part of Hydra (queue Marvel reference)

Oh and thanks for all your efforts again for the predictions thread, it's fun and appreciate your effort towards building such a community :)

Well, Microsoft have certainly found out how much consumers consider their box to be worth. Will be interesting if they keep chucking in lots of free games.

Sony will probably react in the Spring and match the lower price. They could also then do another price cut at the end of the year if Microsoft move again.

Sony planned for pricecuts better than Microsoft. GDDR5 is a blessing in more ways than one.

I don't believe so... Someone can correct me, but everything I had heard is that XB1 is doing horrendously in Europe besides the UK which generally matches the US in tastes. Outside of the UK, Europe has always favored PlayStation compared to Xbox and they are really favoring PlayStation this time, it seems.

donny, do the thing you have done for the past few months when i make a post like this
