Resident Evil REmake Remastered Review Thread

GameTrailers - 9.3
Resident Evil HD Remaster takes one of the best entries in the franchise and cleans it up for modern devices. It still holds up remarkably well. This is the perfect opportunity for newcomers to jump in, and hardcore fans can look forward to the definitive version of a survival horror classic.

Video Review

Game Informer - 9.5/10

It's difficult to understate just how initially bizarre it is to play a classic Resident Evil title with this updated control scheme. I've played the 2002 remake and other early entries dozens of times since its initial release, and was worried the more hyperactive character motions would taint some of the deliberate combat and trepidatious exploration. The minor hit to those elements of the formula is well worth the exchange. Having a character that simply moves in the direction of your analog stick means that's one less thing to think about, freeing players to enjoy this amazing horror game more directly.

These new controls, along with a new easy mode that boosts ammo and health and makes enemies far weaker, present the perfect jumping-on point for RE fans that've been hesitant to try out the classics that solidified the genre's legacy. Purists can stick to the original controls and aspect ratio, but I doubt I'll be going back after shedding the clunky mechanics. I'd love to see Capcom remake the entire catalog of early titles in this style.

Destrructoid 9.5/10

Although I'd love the chance to play a remastered Resident Evil 2 for the first time with updated controls, I'm glad Capcom decided to revive the first entry again. Resident Evil is truly is a timeless classic that every generation should enjoy, and a perfect example of how to do survival horror without decking players out with a full armory.

Welcome back to the mansion.

Hardcoregamer - 4.5/5

If there’s one game that deserves the remaster treatment, it’s Resident Evil. The thirteen year old remake is arguably the best game in the long running series, not only staying true to its source material, but expanding upon it greatly with new content directly built into the core story. While the HD Remaster isn’t a full blown remodel, what Capcom has done allows for an even greater audience to experience the Gamecube classic.

The alternative control scheme ensures a new generation of gamers can play the survival horror title while quickly understanding the movements, and at the same time allowing old school fans the ability to relive the memorable tank controls. It certainly helps that the visuals have been touched up, and the PC version supports multiple graphical options and a smooth 60fps. Whether you missed out on the greatest remake available or you’re a dedicated fan, Resident Evil HD Remaster deserves to be in everyone’s collection.

PSU - 9/10

Resident Evil HD is a stunning recreation of one of survival horror's all-time classics. While some aspects may appear outdated, Capcom's zombie killer is one of the toughest, most rewarding adventure games you'll play, and the HD makeover ensures it looks better than ever.

Videogamer- 9/10

There will be players that despise Resident Evil, of course, decrying its controls and save states. Granted, some of its puzzles can be more than a little obtuse. And its aforementioned graphical issues grate, if only in parts. For me, however, Resident Evil remains a game as odd, unsettling, and unforgettable as its setting. The HD remaster only emphasises this.

Push Square - 8/10

Resident Evil has small issues here and there, and the silly writing and survival gameplay have never been for everybody, but these negatives don't change the fact that this is a fantastic release. The REmake is as enjoyable as ever, enhanced by small improvements that make it that much more playable, and the whole experience hints at just how great a new "classic" Resident Evil could be with today's technology behind it.

Metro - 8/10

In Short: The remake is no longer the technical marvel it once was, but Capcom has done their best to reissue it in a way that maintains all the splendour, scares, and laughs of the original.

Pros: The quality of both the original game and the remake shine through, with a sense of slow-burning tension that is the equal to any modern game. Wonderfully awful dialogue and acting.

Cons: The visuals are a constant compromise, with the quality of the backdrops varying from scene to scene. The new controls are too fast, and spoil the mood.

Gamesradar - 8/10

And that’s really the story of this whole REmaster. It’s an often brilliant but uneven wrapper for a game that’s still, after nearly two decades, one of - if not the - best B-movies in videogame form ever made. Any visual low points are worth enduring because the game itself remains a cold-as-a-morgue-slab classic, and this version offers the best-sounding, most versatile way to play it yet.

IGN - 8/10

I love coming back to Resident Evil, and this version does a good job of updating the look and feel of an old game for a modern audience. Some of the older visual flaws detract from the experience and pulled me out of tense moments, but the gameplay hooked me right back in. Resident Evil relies on atmosphere, tough limitations, and danger creeping around all corners, and this port recaptures the formula of a classic, relentless survival-horror game.

Gamespot - 7/10

All the same, there's a beautiful simplicity to Resident Evil HD that serves as a reminder that the best mysteries don't need convoluted stories to be enthralling. Later Resident Evil games would add more viruses and unnecessary subplots, but the original allows that menacing mansion to do most of the talking. In this series, less is more.

There is backstory to uncover, but the focus is on the here and now. Your motives are clear and your monstrous enemies are plain, and the scant cutscenes always serve a purpose. (The infrequency of cutscenes is just as well, given the high compression of those old audio files, not to mention the general awkwardness of the voice acting and dialogue.) It is you, the mansion, and your imagination. As it happens, that trio makes for a fine adventure, without the need for more monsters, more outbreaks, and more guns

Press Start AU - 9/10

All in all Resident Evil HD Remaster does what it sets out to do – it brings a game from almost thirteen years ago into the modern day and standard and successfully makes it playable for both the new generation and old generation alike. Improvements aside, the game itself is still quite an enjoyable experience owing to its non-linear progression, fantastic artistic direction and new features that make it accessible to newcomers as well as series veterans.

This doesn’t come without its slight downsides though. The new camera can be frustrating in tighter spaces where camera angles are switched quickly and the new control scheme can remove some of the challenge from the game. Similarly, it’s quite obvious some areas received more care and attention in the remaster than others. And obviously there’s not a whole lot that can be done about the atrocious voice work.

Regardless, Resident Evil HD Remaster is still a fantastic game and quite possibly one of the best, if not still the best in the genre. And one that I cannot recommend enough.

Cubed3 - 9/10

While The Evil Within was supposed to be the survival-horror title that was Shinji Mikami's opus, it was the remastering of his immortal classic that will be the one people will remember from 2014. With accessible control options that make it so absolutely anyone can handle it, there is no longer any excuses for this incredible game to be passed on. While there are some minor hiccups with the frame rate in some areas, and an oversight to make door-opening transitions skippable, this is the best game Capcom has put out since Strider 2014.

Capcom really needs to pay attention to what made this title so great, and since they are acknowledging its greatness with this remastering, it paints a more hopeful future for what was once a great franchise. With so few quality survival-horror titles, it is a miracle that something like Resident Evil HD Remaster exists.

Crave - 8.5/10

Many regard Resident Evil as the first successful survival horror video game. Surprisingly, since 19 years ago the genre hasn’t progressed as far as one would have hoped. Resident Evil HD Remaster makes that particularly evident with its experience that, without nostalgia, would still pass a far better than average survival horror game in 2015.

Much of my enjoyment was derived from re-experiencing something that had tremendous impact on me as a child, and I have a strong feeling that newcomers won’t enjoy it as much as I did. That said, this is a survival horror game that fans of the genre owe it to themselves to play, and with this new release priced being as great as it is with a $20 price tag, there’s no excuse to miss it.

Venturebeat - 8.5

I’m willing to bet that fellow survival-horror fans will be refreshed with this trip back to Raccoon City and the mansion that started it all. It still manages to be deep and suspenseful some two decades later, which is a testament to how skillfully crafted the original was. By keeping true to its roots, Resident Evil HD Remaster manages to strip away all of the superfluous additions we’ve seen piled on over the years, leaving only survival horror in its purest form.

Rushed re-do? Not at all. Capcom treated this classic with reverence, which is truly appreciated by this series fan.

PC Gamer - 8/10

A brilliant, brutal survival horror dripping in atmosphere. It’s from the oldest of schools, but still offers a rewarding challenge.

JIM STERLING REVIEW - 9/10

Again, though, these gripes are things people have debated over for decades, and you ought to know by now if they’re a big problem for you or not. This review is thoroughly pointless from the standpoint of informing potential customers anything, but that’s okay. We got to rant about environmental design and zombies for a little while, and that has to be worth something. Minor annoyances aside with some of Resident Evil‘s more dated structural choices, it was a nostalgic blast to go through the ReREmake, to the point where I’m now merrily playing Resident Evil 2 on my PlayStation Vita because I’ve gotten back in the mood for Capcom’s spookily camp brand of schlock horror scares.

Speaking of which, let’s get a Resident Evil 2 remake on the cards, guys. I know you can sit on your holes and pump out rerelease after rerelease of the first one and make bank, but if you can do for Leon and Claire’s adventure what you did for Chris and Jill’s, I’m sure there are many of us who’ll line up with our damp wallets gaping wide open.

Gamesided - 8.5/10

Resident Evil HD is the definitive edition of one of the series’ greatest works. The brilliant level design, lighting engine, scare tactics and mood-altering score nails the deeply atmospheric vibe as great as we’ve ever seen. It’s the same Resident Evil you know and love; it’s just got an extra coat of paint added on top. Even with some of the blemishes littered around the upscaled full HD output, I’d heavily recommend picking this up to anyone looking for a true survival horror experience.

The golden days of Resident Evil may be behind us for good. Instead of lamenting what it has become, let us compromise by appreciating what made the series great in the first place.

We Got This Covered - 4/5

Honestly, the hardest part of this review process has been trying to figure out the basis on which to judge this retro classic. In the year 2015, sitting through a mini cutscene every time I have to open a door and parse out my saves feels downright archaic. The idea that I can’t control the camera and have to assume I’m aimed at my target in a tight corridor before pulling the trigger also seems obscene. However, Resident Evil HD isn’t being sold as a new AAA game, but is instead a 20 year-old title being brought to new light.

If you’ve already run through the mansion countless times, I don’t know if yet another shiny coat of paint will be enough to merit purchasing it again. However, if this is your first chance to play through the game that really brought the survival horror genre to light, it’s past time for you to experience one of the best titles of the 90s.

Rely On Horror - 9.5/10

Resident Evil HD Remaster is a survival horror experience that rivals the likes of modern indie darlings and the few triple A horror games that have succeeded to please genre loyalists (most recently Alien: Isolation and The Evil Within). Fans can now experience what I feel is the definitive version of the game on current-gen consoles and PC, while newcomers can see just how amazing survival horror can get.

This also goes down as one of the best remastered editions produced by Capcom. Now, let’s hope strong sales for this game result in a remake for Resident Evil 2! - See more at: http://www.relyonhorror.com/reviews/review-resident-evil-hd-remaster/#sthash.BkBKAFd8.dpuf

Game-Over 9/10
$20 is about the perfect price point for something like this. Don’t read spoilers, don’t use strategy guides, turn out the lights, and let yourself focus on the game for a while. Put away the cynicism. Yeah, in the cold light of day, Resident Evil is pretty silly, but if you let yourself react to it on its level, it’s frightening in all the right ways. - See more at: http://www.game-over.com/content/2015/01/resident-evil-hd/#sthash.lvaSGtNJ.dpuf

It's probably the best Resident Evil game, and arguably the best survival horror game ever made. There's no reason not to buy this.

Awesome. This is the one main series RE game I have yet to play. I wonder if it's better than Code Veronica in terms of old-school survival horror.

looks like I'm getting this today. GMG is the cheapest price right now?

EDIT: seems so. $15.40 with code SAVE23-PEROFF-MOSANT

I missed out on Remake for the GC, so I can't wait to play this. RE is one of my favorite series and I prefer the horror/puzzle aspects to just full on action.

The only downside is I promised myself I wouldn't build up a backlog this year so I'm not buying this until I beat the game I'm playing now (Pikmin 3 - which I'm loving).

Gonna get this for PC soon but I have too much else to play at the moment. Will be my first real RE experience. Hype!

I'll add
Zona Red 8'6/10 ( spanish site, I'll translate into english)
In one way or the other, do not hesistate in trying what is the best version of the first Resident Evil game, no doubt, and that is more than enough. If you're still unable to enjoy the game, then stop trying to get the hold of the classic Resident Evil gameplay. This is the best exponent of the classic gameplay with all its goods, so at least try it if you want to know how this long series was on its origins.

Too nit picky to support it. If the quality of the background varies then I'd rather just play the consistent quality of the GC original. Shame, I always wanted to play it on new hardware.

From the OT...

I reviewed Resident Evil HD for GameSided. I gave it 8.5/10.

I hope it sells really well so we can have the RE2 remake. I would also dig a RE3 Remake but that's asking too much from Capcom.

Oh, haven't played it since waaay back when on the PSX. Should try to find the time for a re-run! :)

surprised this isn't reviewed lower due to the out dated gameplay style. (Not saying I care about it, but the average "gamer" might.) Maybe the added non-tank controls really make a difference.

In its original form this game was as revolutionary as any game I've ever seen. Remastering the GC game just gives those who are too young or never played a chance to gaze into gaming history, so I'm all for it. Take a look people!

I absolutely loathe the original RE trilogy but I still had some bit of fun with the original REmake. I can't believe Capcom is getting me to spend money on RE1 again.

*will secretly love this version probably*

Great scores !

I think I'm fine with my Wii version for now ( or untill it goes on sale) but I hope everyone on the fence picks this up.

It is one of the finest horror games ever made.

bish gets all the credit :)
How horrible is the background upscaling? Some crazy people like 2xSai and eagle filters on sprite based games, so I need someone with some taste.

Glad to see people in here are sticking to tank controls.

I'm all for player choice and opinions but picking the "modern" controls is just wrong.

I'm betting most, if not all, reviews are done by people familiar with RE1 or REmake. I'm curious how people with no experience with this kind of game would fare.

I'm so excited to play through it again I pre-ordered a few weeks ago and pre-loaded it last night and have been glancing at the countdown on my PS4 ever since

I'll go play this! Never played Resident Evil before. Is there a difference between this game and the original RE in terms of story/plot?

I played this on Gamecube, but don't remember it. I just remember that it was real nice looking, and that I loved it.

Before that I had played the original PSX version a whole bunch, and that's the one I have clearer memories of. It'll be like playing the remaster for the first time.

Preordered and loaded I am excited as heck.
I miss when Resident evil was about horror and wasn't just and action shooter that had monsters.:(

They redid some of the voice work, and changed up a few things. In terms of the basic storyline however, it's pretty much the same.
