Resident Evil REmake Remastered Review Thread

How horrible is the background upscaling? Some crazy people like 2xSai and eagle filters on sprite based games, so I need someone with some taste.

Some of them look alright, and had 2D assets redone tastefully to maintain the illusion. Others are a gigantic, smeary mess. And some proved too complicated to rescale so they rebuilt the room with 3D objects instead of being fully prerendered.

Visually, it is an inconsistent mess. Gameplay wise, this is still one of the more important pieces of survival horror history. If you don't want to deal with the problematic visuals, I guess you could still pick up the Gamecube/Wii version and run it through dolphin. It'd just be pixelated backgrounds instead of smeared ones at that point, though.

Honestly surprised by such great reviews. Looks like a really lazy "remaster"...

Personally, probably gonna grab this on PC somewhere down the line... not sure when.

I kinda expected a lot of people to not have experienced this game, or even played the original - but not quite this amount of people. I'm jealous of those who's first time exploring and experiencing the Spencer mansion will be with this version of the game.

Capcom, the people have spoken. The review scores say it all really.

It's not lazy. It's an inconsistent and somewhat incomplete mishmash of assets and technology, but it's definitely not lazy. They obviously put a lot of work in to reach this state.

I don't like the end result but I can appreciate the lengths they went to given the nature of the game.

If revelations does poorly in review scores that should send the perfect message to capcom

Yes. Im Halfway done with my platinum for the PS3 version. Just need to finish up the last speedrun, and then head on to SURVIVAL mode.
There isn't really much left to upgrade. The fact the game got to be as it is now is sort of a miracle, really.

Platinum has been answered already.

Thanks for the answer.

I am kind of conflicted on whether to grab it now or on a sale later.

I can get it now but I don't have the time to finish it, so I will likely play it when I am free. By that time, the game might as well be on sale. For example I bought inFamous: First Light on day 1 and have yet to play it and it was a PS+ release for Jan. I am also knee deep in my backlog. Hmm...

.

Its cynical and sad to see 'meh lazy' being banded about with so freely.

The interview with the development team behind this remaster a few weeks ago was illuminating in the process they went through.

Lol at the reasons GameSpot gave for low rating. Limiting camera is a problem in old re games? Its like ordering a chicken pizza deliberately and saying this pizza sucks cause I don't like chicken. Annoying inventory? What? Is this reviewer for real? Did he never play an old re game? Too many bad players are game journalist IMO. I thik good gamers should play a game write a review and have these useless English majors edit their work before publishing.

C'mon now, don't start this. Why is it not valid for someone to review the game and criticize it for reasons that a new player might? After all, this game is appearing on modern consoles, and there will be plenty of new players. Some of them might be turned off by these old design decisions, and it looks like the reviewer was as well. Whether he's played the original game or not, he's allowed to find fault with it in 2015. Besides, it's not like he trashed the game.

No that's not acceptable IMO. You want me to review a 2d fighter and take points off because I can't sidestep? That's ridiculous. You have to review a game based on what it is. This is an old school RE game port. And this is how the game was made. They originally rated it 9.6 (i think) ofcourse different reviewer. If they took points off for low frame rate, short campaign, fine that's a valid complain but complaining a game for what its original design is just dumb. The complain he gave out is more of him struggling to adapt and get good at the game rather than legit excuses IMO. Its on the same level as people who suck at punishing Zoners in fighting games and then calling it a bad game because everyone projectile spams.

Only valid excuse there IMO is the sound compression that's good excuse if its true.

I love RECVX more than RE4.

It's one of my all time favorite RE games and it's what ultimately made me a fan of the RE games. I love everything about no matter how terribly designed it was, I can play that game blindfolded at this point, I own every version.

I really liked CVX too, but I can see why some people hated it.

It's the Resident Evil formula on steroids:
  • Really hard enemies
  • Really long story
  • Huge levels
  • Tons of backtracking

Wow, I think all those reviews just swayed me. No Vita release
or Wii U, I wanted that good off TV play :(
so I'll be preloading it for PS4 tonight. RE at midnight, spooooky!

I wonder if they can remake RE2 like this. It would look hideous but getting to play it on a modern console would be...well, normal, considering you can play it on a Vita. lol.

Are you under the assumption that game reviews all start out as 10/10 by default, and then reviewers deduct half-points based on the flaws they come across? You certainly seem to think that's the case. That's not how people review games, or movies, or music, or books. Any reviewer will tell you that.

Why would it look hideous? I thought this looked decent enough, and I remember the GameCube version was great too.

Or do you mean if they did an HD version of Resident Evil 2 (no remake)?

PS3/PS4 version is cross-buy, right? I might buy it on PS3 so that I can play it later on PS4.

I'm playing through the PC version and experiencing the game for the first time.

For what it's worth, this release is actually the best possible scenario considering the situation. The original renders are gone at this point and Capcom has remastered the audio, 3D models, and even remade some backgrounds entirely.

60 FPS, 16:9 mode, and M/KB controls are working perfectly.

I dunno, man. The game is still an obvious classic, still great to play by even new players who give the controls a chance. Knocking off points for having unfamiliar controls is like shitting on Casablanca because it's black and white.

Is that even a valid criticism considering Capcom even added the analog controls for the modern gamer who is incapable of adapting?

No but the excuses he gave out is just absurd. Look at the ign review. Their excuses as to why they assigned the score they did perfectly acceptable and valid. The GameSpot guy on the other hand seems like he was just frustrated that he was bad at the game.IMO of course. And I know different people have different opinions. But I am still allowed to criticize other people's opinion.

I think this is mainly happening because Capcom is broke and they saw cleaning up the Gamecube version as some easy money. It's getting a great response so far though, so if it makes money hand over fist, who knows. But I'd wager on Code Veronica or RE4 being more likely candidates, they'd be less work to make presentable.

Game Informer gave it a 9.5!? Wow, that was unexpected given how they've treated some survival horror titles in the past both in preview and review content. It's topped their Best Horror Games in the past so it probably shouldn't be that much of a surprise, but it's pleasant all the same.

I'll be holding off on it as I still have the original GCN title that I regularly dip into, but I'll probably get it down the line.

Hmm...I'm not sure if they'll do a REmaster of 2 .REmaster 2 would likely involve enough work that they'd just make it a full blown REmake 2, instead of trying to redo the assets in an exact but slightly improved fashion.

Which reminds me that I need to make time to do a play though of RE2 (GCN) after a 7-8 years break.

No point getting it now at full price if you're not going to play it. Just wait until a sale or when you have time.

Some people legitimately don't enjoy Resident Evil. To them the game isn't a 10/10, or even a 7/10. It might be a 4/10. Regardless of how someone feels, why do they need to give 'excuses'? By using that word, and phrases like 'knocking off points' you're indicating that the game is owed some 10/10 score, and any reviewer that deviates too far from that has some 'splainin to do.

That's ridiculous. Maybe he only thought the game deserved 7/10 because that's how he felt while playing it. Why does he have to have a solid 'criticism' to justify each point lower than 10/10 that he scores the game?

I agree on this. I want the game (specially if it's cross-buy PS3/PS4) but I have a huge backlog and I know I won't play this for the next few weeks. I'll wait.
