i get why people are mad. there's severe controversy over white people emulating black hair styles, and it often feels like white people only embrace certain elements of black culture when it suits them to do so.

but at the same time, you've got to respect personal agency to do what you want with your body (and by extension, hair).

there's no real right answer, but harassment isn't it. getting indignant over a haircut is kinda ridiculous.

To hell with them. There's nothing with her hair. The fact that things like that are being adopted and adapted is great and will lead to a more diverse society.

On another one, those twitter warriors are obviously cowardly gang bullying a young insecure teenage girl.

Getting mad about a haircut is such a first world problem.

Culture is malleable and changes over time, it's one of its' greatest features and isn't something anyone should want to keep in a static state.

I can only hope more white girls wear afros and braids, it might encourage black girls to wear their hair natural. /shrug

I get the criticism this is based on, but jesus christ that's acting like a complete asshole. This girl is what, 13 or something? Christ.

Yes we are ...

Real talk, I have light skin and dreadlocks, and I say that every once in a while. Though I do get annoyed that people think I'm cosplaying as them because I wear a black leather jacket.

The twins were a wasted opportunity in the Matrix 2.

Is everyone on twitter a twat? It certainly seems that way.

The comedy racism sprinkled in there gives me my daily dose of irony.

our bodies, our music, our fashion, our lips, our hair…everything about us is ripe for the picking by people WHO DO NOT TREAT US WELL.

This is what stood out the most for me. Do some people really think that way?

Bodies...lips...huh?

I think this stems from black women seeing hairstyles that they were being mocked and ridiculed for wearing become acceptable and trendy now that white people are doing it.

There is a discussion to have about that, but this little girl isn't a talking point. Everyone watch "Good Hair" by Chris Rock.

It's a case of not calling the individual racist and calling the group racist because it's easier, causing them to be just as racist.

Word. That thing is a god damn horror movie.

she looks hella cute with box braids. hopefully she'll keep them. let people get salty. there's no appropriation going on, im guessing a lot of those tweets are from salty girls who had to go buy tbeir box braids and are mad the girl in OP just braided her own hair.

She has every right to wear whatever hairstyle she wants. That's the only answer.

Well, I certainly didn't see this when I was younger. It was usually light skinned latin women who got braids, but I don't remember anyone caring.

Feminism appropriation. Culture, as a result of institutionalized racism is privilege gone to the extreme of years of racism and hatred. Cultural appropriation exemplifies feminism and equality #BlackLivesMatter

I understand where the concern comes from but it's really not that serious. No need to be hateful.

Girl looks ridiculous btw.

Twitter users strike again. Sadly this is becoming the norm now.

Someone is going to cure AIDS/Cancer/etc soon and we will have Twitter users saying something dumb as shit to ruin it.

I feel like this " this is ours" culture for all races is really just another form of self imposed segregation. People that claim you cannot do something becuase you are not the correct race isn't helping races unite with each other, the only thing it does is help the perpetuation of separation between the races.

we callin white people "mayo" now?

You know what, if this thread was about an asian girl (i'm guessing you're asian because of your avatar) and she was going super european on something, you wouldn't like it if someone in here would go "we're calling yellow people ____ now?", would you?

Serious question, do some people in black communities think straight hair is a white culture?

Yes. But the bigger problem is, hairstyles that are seen as belonging to black culture are often vilified by the powers that be as being "Ugly" or "Unkempt" or "Inappropriate". The reason why people are upset here is that this girl is taking one of those ugly, unkempt, inappropriate hairstyles and being praised for it.

Of course, the rub is, if anyone had box braids that looked that clean, they would be praised. They're really well done.

They need to take it easy on the millennials, who are far more color blind than they get credit for.

To be fair, it's also the millennials that get offended at EVERYTHING. This is in that sphere of lolworthy offended.

... it's hair. Grab some perspective people.

Girl did nothing wrong. To hell with all those miserable cunts and their unfulfilled lives. Bitching about culture appropriation is by and large fucking stupid anyhow. There is no such thing as cultural ownership and if there was it's an antiquated concept that should have no place in modern society.
