White girl attacked for getting box braids

You're putting words in my mouth and at the same time demonstrating a lack of understanding of what I said while not refuting anything once again. Anton had a legitimate rebuttal to that post in which he said it'll simply be impossible to measure the degree in which new school racist institutions (colorblind racism and the drug war for example) and thought has replace the old school ones (Jim Crow/ lynchings). Basically I'm not going to concern myself with which is worse between those two as both are not good things. I'm not settling for that kind of progress.

Specifically, in response to this question: "Race relations haven't improved since the 1950s". Are you arguing that they haven't?

I assume the outrage about this is an American thing? Little white girls have been going on holiday to Spain and getting their hair braided for decades, and I've never heard of any outrage about it.

Out of curiosity, isn't Spain like surprisingly racist against black people/Africans?

Edit: nevermind, i thought you lived in Spain.

not really sure why this thread has expanded into cultural appropriation, seems incredibly irrelevant to the topic at hand of a kid getting her hair done (which she probably saw on tv or whatever)

When a 12 year old gets braids she's not making a political/racial statement or invading anyone's culture. She just likes the way it looks. She doesn't have to understand anything or become more supportive of anybody or try to justify any kind of attack because whatever.

It's an embarrasing situation for all those who jumped on her and they are the ones that need any kind of education or understanding if anyone involved needs it. There's absolutely no kind of justification for what they did.

Why doesn't she? Because she's 12 or however old she is?

It really is, though. And cultural appropriation really isn't "incredibly irrelevant" Idk, fuck him, though.

I saw a black woman with hair dyed blonde yesterday at work. Guess I should have cussed her out.
Lol sir, you win. For real, people are just so blatantly racist. Next thing you know they will be saying a white basketball player isn't allowed to drive a Cadillac because it's only for black basketball players.

How does that make any of it right? Are you saying it is alright to call white people mayo because white people are racist too?

Did I say it was right? No. I just said it happens. It's not a compliment if it's chocolate or mayo.

All over the place.

Nah, improvement is in the eye of the beholder. What you think is better is just a change for others. Change is not always an improvement.

She's probably had very little exposure to overt racism. I mean shit I'm 34 and I am blown the fuck away watching movies like "The Help" because it seems surreal that our country could have been like this. Concepts like institutional racism weren't even explained to me until college and require more thought than a 12 year old person will have put into it.

That's why I think her hair is more of a symptom if improving race relations and why I think it's important to identify it as such.

I definitely agree that tacking institutional racism is the next hurdle. It's a much more abstract concept, but I think it's demonstrated fairly well in statistics.

She probably hasn't had much exposure to blatant racism, but who knows? I'm almost 30 and elementary/high school kids freely used "nigger", even around the few black kids who attended my school. There's no way to know what she has experienced. This COULD be a sign that things are getting better, sure. That is definitely within the realm of possibility.

You're more of an optimist than me, though :) Not an insult, btw.

I don't think anyone here thinks she is making a political/racial statement.

I'm not sure why you're equating "understanding" with "justifying". Understanding is not justification, it's just...understanding. It's acknowledgment of where a group is coming from, why they feel the way they feel, and why they unfairly attacked her. It's not justification, it's not an excuse.

Uhhhh ... yeah?

I don't think 12 is too young for a person to understand what they're saying. It's not too young for a parent to install racism in a person so they can point out differences. But maybe understanding is more difficult? Idk, this thread is making it seem so.

And you're saying this comes from black people or other white people? Either way, I'm sure it happens but it shouldn't stop you from showing love for things you care about. It goes both ways. Talk to black people that are fans of heavy metal or something. Males that love ballet/opera. These expectations of someone isn't just a race thing and it shouldn't stop people from enjoying things they genuinely care about.
Comes from black people, the same "appropriation" angle, as though it isn't mine to like, as if that even makes sense at all. As for the "just be yourself" angle, when the confrontation is something like "lol you're girly" while yet letting you be that is a lot different from when it is "you're stealing our culture and a fraud, fuck off" so sorry if I'd prefer avoiding the latter type of confrontation.

Rationality isn't a win when so many feelings and histories that must be understood are in play, you just have to "respect" by bowing to the notion of offense whether or not a justification for connecting point A to point B is ever articulated, so long as it is felt. Any sort of arguing at all is taken as a disregard for all the rest once agreement on your wrongness is established.

That said, I do appreciate some of you guys here on GAF who actually believe in explaining and exchanging.

Maybe they don't want to understand. That's the conclusion I've come to from being in this thread.

Likewise, I think people lack empathy if they don't understand why "cultural appropriation" is a thing in American society.

Defending attacking a 12 year old. Pathetic truly pathetic. The 12 year old did nothing wrong, and there is no reason to be outraged. Unless she started doing racist shit you have no reason to get upset, there is no justification here. You're just looking for shit to be mad at.

Social media like Twitter and Facebook will be the doom of mankind. All it does is sow seeds of misinformation, doubt and the illusion that all opinions are equal. Honestly people should have to earn the right to go on the internet. Dumb fucks.

Because the teenaged white girl did nothing wrong, the selected Twitter users quoted expressing anger and citing various social/racial issues are the ones in the wrong (in this singular instance, at least), and some posters just can't accept that.

I've used that pic at the barbershop I go to. Haven't gotten shit for it.

Your hair, your choice.

I'd recommend to her to just ignore all the inane complaints from people who spend too much time on the internet.

The conclusion I've gotten from this thread: don't use other peoples cultures without first writing an essay on cultural approximation and why you shouldn't "steal" other peoples cultures.

I'm talking about the Twitter idiots. They saw her with a hairstyle that is predominantly worn by black people and said she can't wear it because she is mayo. I was comparing it to how stupid if someone said the same thing about black and white basketball players and what car they drive. Did you misunderstand the intent of my post? There was no offense meant and I apologize if I came off that way.

Attacking the child on twitter was dumb, can we just refer to her as a child since her age keeps dropping? are people lowering her age to get a point across?

Tell you what, comb through my posts in this thread and show me where I defended those attacking a 12 year old. Don't worry I'll wait, you can take your time.

With that state, read my post with full comprehension this time. I'm talking about why the cries of "cultural appropriation" are a thing in American society at large. As in why any group complains about it at all regardless of this situation. Unless you're daft and think this is like the first time in American history that phrase has been used.

And maybe I'm being too hard. I understand how they must feel but, peoples reaction was outrageous. She's a 12 year old girl for god sakes, leave her the fuck alone.

I apologize.

It's ridiculous. You're being ridiculous. She's a 12 year old gir. If she wants'; to wear braids then let her. Why does she need a reason? This is a completely harmless thing and you people make this into something worthy of outrage.

Who is defending attacking the young girl (I guess her age hasn't been confirmed)? Who are you talking to?

This tweet is what this is about:

@sanyulukwago 4m4 minutes ago
@pukestagram box braids are black culture and the basis of the arguments were that culturally black hairstyles are considered unprofessional and ghetto on black girls, but praised on white girls. it wasn't about feminism.

The attacks on her weren't deserved. The place of frustration that likely led to the attacks, is more than worthy of discussion.

Well, if this is a common occurrence for you, I'm sorry to hear it. It's a shame you run across so many seemingly militant black people.

Nah, I didn't. It was just a dumb post celebrating another dumb post. I feel like you misunderstood the intention and meaning of their tweets, though.

Was there any rage when this was going on?

Or are those people going after her because she's a little girl and can't really defend herself? Some of those people replying to her are disgusting.

And maybe I'm being too hard. I understand how they must feel but, peoples reaction was outrageous. She's a 12 year old girl for god sakes, leave her the fuck alone.

No one is even talking about the little girl whose age keeps dropping, at the current rate she'll be 5 by page 20.

I'm white. I'm afforded the luxury of optimism here. I'm not being bombarded by constant institutional racism. lol

Pathetic. She has nothing to apogize for. I'm sick and tired of this "racial appropriation" bullshit, whether it's in relation to music or fashion. Black people don't own box braids.

I'm a little confused, has there ever been a decade where white people driving cadillacs were met with any amount of suspicion on how they acquired said cadillac?

Also an automobile is not really the same as a the natural hairtype or hairstyle of a person being seen as below means, ghetto and inappropriate. And success having to come from changing everything natural about you to fit in and that still not being enough.

The twitter posters themselves are certainly in the wrong but trying to make light of the impact of cultural appropriation says a lot about you.

Fun insinuations! From the OP...

11yo mayo appropriates black culture with corn colored box braids and half of twitter doesn't see an issue i gtg

@laurensjauregui 18h18 hours ago
this 14 yo girl wearing box braids and acting like she isnt appropriating black culture GOD whites are so annoying

I assume most of us ran with 14 because she doesn't look 11.

Or you could do like everyone else in here and ignore our feelings because we don't matter. We just do cool shit.
.

Yup your feelings don't matter at! We should have to handle these things with kid gloves. I understand how fucked up society treats blacks. I've rallied against the racists in the police, I've rallied against the racists in the government. This is not racist, this is not cultural theft. It's a harmless act by a little girl. Again, i apologize, theres nothing more I can do. If she wants to wear braids then let her.

derision, maybe, but discussion? what is there to discuss about this? it's a superficial change to one's appearance. are we gonna dog on black people who wear chinos and saddle shoes?

Pathetic. She has nothing to apogize for. I'm sick and tired of this "racial appropriation" bullshit, whether it's in relation to music or fashion. Black people don't own box braids.
basically this.

I don't understand people who enter threads and just assume it hasn't moved on after 600 posts.

You really think people could talk about some rando's Twitter comments for that long? Seems more likely the conversation moved on to the issue at large...

They must be picking on her because she's a little white girl. LOL. where were they when *insert pic of white person with braids* this was happening or *insert another pic* this? LOL if they weren't talking about this then they must not have any points to their argument now and are just being racist.

So you're doing all this but you can't understand why some black women might be upset over a white girl wearing a style they would receive criticism for? We're past the tweets onto to the issue itself. Regardless of how they came across, there's a point within those tweets. Do you see it, yes or no?

Why on Earth would you think that hair is the only cultural heritage that "these people" consider as their own?

Let me first preface, that by "these people", I mean these people that wrote about her on Twitter.

And I'm specifically talking about this post:
"@QueenIdle 19h19 hours ago
"War over some braids" Box braids are black culture. We have almost nothing for ourselves. It matters to us."

So it was wrong of me to lump them all together. I apologize.
