Halo: The Master Chief Collection Beta Update Program Announced

Whats extra frustrating, is the compensation being talked about, i.e free month of live, ODST campaign for free, had a cut off date - you had to play MCC before Dec 19th. As if the game was fixed and running as it should have been by then.

This

is

amazing

people, keep preordering and buying day one without knowing opinions. It really astounds me that there are people who understand a lot about frames, aliasing, level design and still flock with the uninformed masses to give these companies money without knowing if the game has some quality

if a father doesnt demand his sons to study and work hard they wont do it
Videogame companies are lazy because we give them money without proof (specially the informed gamers who behave like the COD/FIFA crowd)

Everything is planned to be fixed. This beta test is of an update that drastically overhauls some of the underlying issues, rather than trying to fix them bit by bit.

This is good. I potentially get to laugh at the absurdity, *and* rebuy the game.

At least theyre still looking for solutions. Now I hope we can see this game getting trully fixed, cause its core problems are still all there.

Again, player have to do what developers didnt have time/will to do before release.

Plus, giving away ODST without the firefight...

That's a big statement. Do you mean "everything" as in overt glitchiness, or you also committing to dealing with most of the non-stability-affecting porting issues like Halo 3's audio problems?
Or even update Halo 3 maps and gametypes to what they actually were at the end of sustain efforts. Vanilla day one maps, equipment, and weapon spawns are broken.

To be fair thats plenty of time for most people to have heard the game was broken. Unless you got it for christmas then you were sol.

I know multiplayer is a big thing but if they want this to be the definitive collection, I hope they fix campaigns, not just crashes and bugs, make Halo CE match the Xbox version not the sort of close but no cigar PC version and Halo CEA make over is hideous, Halo 2 PC isn't perfect either, ODST without Firefight. Maybe asking for too much but show some extra love for the games rather than that'll do. Keep patching and updating Halo MCC, Halo 3 Anniversary in 2017. Continue to rework the games and perfect them but always compiled as Halo MCC.

So if I read this correctly, the only way we can get into the Xbox One Preview program is invite only from a current member?

And in order to sign up for the MCC beta testing...we have to be an Xbox One Preview program member?

Okay, so I'm not an Xbox One Preview Program member...and I'd like to help beta test...how do I go about doing this?

Lol - I have never felt more screwed with a purchase of any other game. Still shocked that a Halo game released broken. That is unprecedented to me.

So people who played the game from like mid december to now are out of luck for compensation even though the game is now having a beta for a patch, confirming it is NOT in a state that could be considered finished.

Like fuckkkkkkk yoooooooooooouuuuuuu

I appreciate frankie coming here and posting and all, that cannot be easy he's basically walking into a lions den, but it feels like driveby comments now that mean nothing.

"we're fixing everything"

When? How? Whats the timeline? What bugs are you aware of? Where are you priorities when it comes to bugs? When can we expect PROMISED features that were supposed to be there day one in game? What do people who are beta testing a patch for your game that came out three months ago getting for their troubles? What about the people that bought your game post compensation window only to find hey its still a dumpster fire?

I think we'd all like some real answers for once.

How are they still allowed to sell this game in stores right now?
What a mess.
Video gaming is a special industry where the standard rules don't apply. Not only is the game still for sale, it continued to be advertised and promoted by Microsoft. They really don't give a damn.

There really should be a formal product recall program in place for people that are having serious issues that have been unaddressed.

I'm starting to feel quite disgusted that three months later I still have a digital product that doesn't work as advertised and that I can't do anything with it.
There absolutely should have been a recall program, especially for physical copies where retailers tell you tough luck when you try to return it.

Don't worry guys maybe Dan Ayoub will say something after going MIA since November 13th
I'm still shocked he hasn't resurfaced at all, or that MS or 343 would allow that kind of behavior. Then again, maybe he doesn't want to show his face in public after saying things like this.

It's a beta update, not the game. Steam does this all the time.

Predictably, people are just seeing a word and jumping at an opportunity to make a quip.
There's a bit of a contextual difference in that those are updates for working games, not an attempt to restore basic functionality to a game that's been broken for months.

That's a big statement. Do you mean "everything" as in overt glitchiness, or you also committing to dealing with most of the non-stability-affecting porting issues like Halo 3's audio problems?
Most likely the former rather than the latter. I don't think you'll get a response to this. 343 hasn't even acknowledged that there aware of those and many other issues, let alone committed to resolving them. I haven't even seen a statement regarding the shot registration in Halo 2, which is game-breaking for any sort of competitive play.

It's sad, but at least we know they're attempting to fix it instead of pretending it's working.
Oh, they've done that too. I think the phrase used not that long ago was "largely functional."

Honestly, I want this game to work. I really, really do. I love classic Halo and I still want to play it online. It's just really disappointing to see the state that the game is in and knowing how much irreparable damage has been done to the population. Even if the matchmaking starts working, the game is still a long ways away from working properly, as so many other issues still exist.

That said, if I can get into the beta, I will. I just want the game to work, and I'll deal with the beta hassles if it means it gets us all closer to a working game.

This is prettttty bad. It actually sounds like they could've rewritten the netcode because whoever wrote it before managed to do such a crappy job of it, no wonder they'll want to beta test.

Honestly the more I let this sink in the more I'm actually glad they're doing a beta for this test. The last few patches for MCC have either re-broken things that were previously fixed (parties) or straight up introduced new bugs in general. A testing phase for this big patch is probably a good thing.

Still though, by the time this patch is out and assuming its the "big fix" it's likely that it will be 4 months (read: a third of a year) post release before this game is actually at the level it should be at. Honestly ODST, one more map, and a month of XBL isn't enough.

Yea, I thought this was in bad taste too. Just seems cheap and implies that the game was fixed after Dec 19th.

I am sure there are project managers who ran this at 343 who are in the dog house because of this, or out of a job. And more significantly, whole teams of outsourced devs who 343/MS won't work with again.

That wouldn't surprise me in the slightest! How many did they outsource to again, was it 7 or 8?!

They sacrificed Halo for the Xbox One.

Microsoft had two choices
- release for the Christmas sales, deceive consumers and deal with the backlash later
- delay the game, release it when it's ready

Everyone knows Xbox has been behind the PS4. Long term effects of losing the Christmas sales may foreseeably mean the end of Xbox as a brand. If this console didn't pick up, would Microsoft want another one? The PS4 would just snowball to the point of everyone buying one because their friends had one. Third parties may even start neglecting Xbox a little, releasing poor ports (a la Konami).

So Microsoft released Halo, broken. They needed to shift the consoles. The result, Halo is pretty much dead to a lot of people, but they figure they can keep people around with the promise of Gears, Remedy's next game, Forza, Tomb Raider, other third party exclusives... such a shame.

Its beta testing for a patch, to make sure it works before releasing it to the public. It sounds pretty nice and transparent to me.

Maybe because I used to play lots of MMOs which did stuff like this, idk, but it sounds good to me.

If they were that desperate, they should have and could have released just Halo 2 Anniversary for full price with the deal that H1,3 and 4(lol) would be coming later, all for free!

This is way they could up population numbers throughout the months following release and hype each title individually.

Then even if H2A had issues they could still get people back by promising it will be fixed when the next game arrives.

Instead they've fucked the entire thing up and set a stupid cut off date for the compensation, considering the game is still in a awful state. Until a patch is released that significantly fixes the game, the compensation should be open to all users.

I question, who fucked: 343 due to bad management, or did Microsoft push for an early release. I think it might be a bit of both. 343 outsourced the crap out of the game and Microsoft had a date set in stone with no possible way to delay it. Can't believe they did all of these presentations and actually sold us this game without a guilty conscience.

For all we know MS was being told by 343 everything was gonna be perfect

It's probably a case of too many cooks in the kitchen. I hope I get selected for the Beta but either was with the Halo 5 beta over I'll go back to playing a MCC for a while.

Yep, good job fucking over all those people that received a broken game for Christmas.

Beta test only in states is a bad sign for everyone around the world. The game even in its broken state. has probably 98% of all games played hosted over there. I get the feeling that they will just consolidate all server hosting over there, after the beta has got it working...

Brace yourselves for the worst rest of the worldGAF

Haven't read through the entire thread, what are the thoughts on what this update is? I know MCC and the H5 beta were using Microsoft's party system for partying and matchmaking and that it would be completely rewritten for H5. Do you think 343 decided Microsoft's party system wasn't the way to go for MCC and are now using their own system similar to what H5 will have?
