COMICS! |OT| January 2015. So many variants you'd swear it's 1995 instead.

I was wondering the same thing but the problem with the Infinity HC is it includes the avenger issues. double dip =/ and I think I heard the paper is bad.

Is it? That'd certainly be disappointing.

We can't really know for sure, but it is pretty likely.

How I think they will come out are:

Avengers by Hickman omnibus vol 1
Avengers 1-23
New Avengers 1-12
Infinity 1-6

Avengers by Hickman omnibus vol 2
Avengers 24-44
New Avengers 13-33

And a Secret Wars omnibus which will include Secret Wars and a mess of tie-ins.

Hmm, yes that makes sense for how'd they do it. Forgot to consider that Secret Wars would have a mess of tie-ins as well as Avengers and New Avengers ending just before the event starts.

Curious how a Secret Wars omnibus will be constructed, though I suppose that'll have to wait until we start seeing the solicits. Should be next month, I think?

It's funny, I've largely been off of comics aside from looking into some new series like Ms. Marvel, but this whole thing has me legitimately interested. Particularly surprising since I tend to dislike events. Makes me want to catch up as well. I've been eyeing the OHC of Thor: God of Thunder now that that series is complete.

So we're gonna make the attempt to go back to the OT in Feb, right?

Alright guys, so Image titles.

As you know, I'm basically an idiot when it comes to comics. So can someone gimme the low-down on Image's current best titles and why they're worth reading?

I currently am reading Sex Criminals, Wytches, and Southern Bastards. What else in this vein is worth reading? I'm gonna be checking out Nailbiter, Chew, and Pisces. I tried Walking Dead and did not like it.

You like Matt Fraction, so check out Casanova. Buy the hardcovers then start the new series.

Deadly Class is good too, you should be reading that. The art is stylish as hell and the coloring is amazing. Remender's doing a killer job at writing Marcus and his squad. It's been one of my favorite books every month it's out for a reason.

So, how is Busiek pronounced?

Yes, I started reading Astro City again instead of reading the many comics in my backlog. Don't judge me. -_-

Nameless starts next week and is a horror book from Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham, It is getting rave advance reviews.
ODY-C by Matt Fraction and Christian Ward is a couple issues in and is a space opera genderbent take on the Odyssey. The art and writing are both top notch.
Zero by Ales Kot, Jordie Bellaire, and a rotating cast of artists is a spy book with a sci fi bent that tells the story of Edward Zero. Each issue takes during a different point in Zero's life and are largely one off stories, while still moving the plot forward to the ultimate end game, which was seen one page 1 panel 1 of issue 1.
Manhattan Projects by Jonathan Hickman and Nick Pitarra. The main series wrapped up in November of last year and it is being relaunched in March of this year. It's the best comic ever, check out my love letter to the series from last year - http://neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=102731324&postcount=18

I could reiterate things that have already been mentioned, but I won't (except for DEADLY CLASS). Also give Velvet and Rat Queens a shot.

but I am taking tiny steps forward
Ended up getting Simonson Thor Artist Edition from IST and some Copic Wide markers with the remains of my tax return.

Very nice. I'll get an Artist Edition eventually... I bought the Daredevil: Born Again Artist Edition a year ago but ended up selling it since I couldn't handle spending that much on one book. I still really want the Hellboy Artist Edition.

But speaking of taxes, I was bored this morning so I decided to do my taxes. My federal refund was like $35. My taxes due to the state were like $80. Boo.

Filthy Slug

Crowd screaming like hounds at the heat of the chase/ All the colors of the rainbow flood my face
Yep.
Assuming the next issue of Annihilator ships next month it will be a three Morrison book month.
The best part is that the quality of his books has been stellar since he moved away from main-cape shit. And oh yeah, Return of the Burnham.

I'm getting $1,400 back from federal. :D
If I made just $700 more in taxable income last year, I would have been placed in a different tax bracket. XD

Gonna preorder a few Hot Toys/Sideshow statues with my tax return.

Ed's Spider-Gwen piece was way better than the JSC variant
Reminds me of Spectacular Spider-Man 101 which is one of my absolute favorite covers:
::blush::

I think I liked JSC artwork when I was about 14 due to the ASM covers he did when JMS started out on the title, but he's kind of just a holdover from 90s. He's got a ton of fans I guess. And yes, my piece is a ripoff homage of that famous cover

Here it is in all its glory. ]
so so tempted to get it. will probably get it.

could be worse
Technically a good drawing, but its like the artist was hell bent on drawing the same type of girl he/she has always drawn regardless of character type

Velvet and Invincible (Kirkman's best book in my opinion, though Outcast is cool too).

Trust me NTGYK, from one Canadian brah to another.

Okay, so, I will be checking out:

Casanova
Deadly Class
Nameless
Zero
Manhattan Projects
Velvet
Thief of Thieves
ODY-C

I'm a bit hesitant on Rat Queens, but that's cause I'm not a huge fan of fantasy. Not sure about Invincible cause superheroes... eh.

Which is strange cause I just realized that I read a bunch of cape books.

Not that I'm complaining, but I'm surprised that Spider-gwen is getting such popularity =)
Really love her design, just hope there'll be good stories featuring her.

Hey Ed, mind if I throw in a request please?
I'll try to find good images of the character I want you to draw and post it later if you can.

I hope there is a Spider Gwen story where we find out that she is really an inhuman and that Norman Osborn is her father and they still do it again anyways but it's ok because she's really a clone who gets killed by the real Spider Gwen who is also an Inhuman and not a part of Team Sony™

Also @Zombine did you really think once SW came to Marvel CMX wouldn't get that shit?

I was under the assumption that Marvel would try to stagger and control what releases under their leadership in regards to Star Wars. I'm glad they saw the $$$$ and are just going to release it all.

Keep your moronic fanfics to yourself, Zombine~

Wonder if Morrison'd ever go back to writing a Marvel series...

Very nice. In a year or two when I'm not a dependent and own a home and all that jazz, I'll get to experience the joys of big tax returns. Haha

I need to be careful about my tax bracket this coming year too though. With my new job and the fact that I'm still going to work 10-ish hours a week at my old retail job, it basically all depends on exactly how many hours I get at my retail job whether or not I'll hit the next tax bracket. But I mean, if I do, I'll just throw some money in a Traditional IRA or donate some money and I'll be all good.

I've done it brahs. I am no longer gracing Walmart with my talents. I am devoting my my time to becoming a comics superstar. This time, I'm going full force!

I've never really been into comics, but I wouldn't mind getting into them. I have read things like Watchmen, which I really enjoyed.

I'd like to check out something with a "traditional" super hero though, like Spiderman or Batman. The only this is, it seems pretty complicated to get into those. I would have no clue where to start. I actually really like origin stories, so I would like a run that starts with one. Is there anyway that I could read something like Spiderman, but where it has a beginning, middle, and end?

For real? Awesome. You genuinely have the talent, Rafa. You just need to break through that barrier and you'll be a star. Best of luck, buddy.

All Star Superman by Grant Morrison would be perfect.

Or if you want Spiderman, Bendis wrote a super long Ultimate Spiderman run that's pretty much his life from beginning to end.

If you're still looking for recommendations, I can recommend Manifest Destiny. The story is that Lewis and Clark are undertaking their famous expedition, but not under the circumstances we're all familiar with. President Jefferson has tasked them with investigating secret reports regarding undiscovered forms of plant and animal life across America. Once they begin the expedition, they encounter all sorts of fantastic creatures and situations. There are 2 trades out so far and the next issue will begin a new story arc. I don't see it talked about a lot, but I really enjoy it.

When it comes to superhero comics, it's best to just read 'runs', which is how many issues a certain author has worked on that title.
For example, let's take Spiderman:
You have JMS and John Romita Jr.'s run from the early 2000s
61HmW5LivLL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

This is based on the traditional Spiderman (continuity), it has an 'end' of sorts, even though other writers wrote the character after his departure.

Then there's Ultimate Spiderman by Brian M. Bendis, which was a re-imagining of Spiderman but set in the early 2000s era as well, really good run IMO

As a first timer, I wouldn't recommend some of Grant Morrison's work as his writing style may not click with you immediately, but I'd be glad to share some recommendations.

Consider also reading anything by Mark Waid, most of his superhero comics writing is fun and entertaining.

For Superman, just go for All-Star Superman, has a beginning, middle and end, AND IS overall self contained ;)
