Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate: Review Thread

They added (facultative) tutorial quests for each weapon of the game. It won't tell you the best combos, but at least it will help new players to understand some weapons better, though some tutorials barely scratch some subtilities. And the same old quests of the boring first hour are still there (harvest x mushrooms, bring back x eggs, kill x jaggis). Though, you really need to do about 4 or 5 of these quests before unlocking the main dish (ie. hunting big monsters, starting with our little friend, the Great Jaggi), so I guess it's fine. The intro is also interesting, since you begin directly with a tutorial hunt against the Daren Mohran.
Players who played the 3rd generation exclusively (MH3, MH3rd, MH3U) will also be quite happy, since the game will pit you exclusively against completly new monsters at the beginning (aside from the Great Jaggi, but he's just there as a punching ball).

Filthy casuals raping muh games again!
I knew I should've put some sort of smiley there.

It's hard to tell with that hilarious image lol

I already missed Nargs and Lagias :(

I gave it a 9 - Fokgames (Dutch)

I've played almost a hundred hours and made it to HR7, finished singleplayer.

Like:
- New mechanics (frenzy virus, climbing, mounting) are all great and make old fights feel fresh again. Fights are also more mobile and spectacular.
- 92 monsters total. It feels like there is no end to the content. I'm still fighting new monsters even now. Haven't even made it to G-rank where more await. Many monsters are old or 'subspecies', but as I said before the new mechanics make these fights still feel fresh.
- Singleplayer was an immense bore in 3U imo. 4U is way better. The NPC's are funnier, the story is more engaging and the fact that you travel through various towns makes you feel like you're on an adventure.
- Both new weapons are boss.

Dislike:
- I played with a regular 3DS XL. Combat is a little clunky without a second stick.
- Lobbies are limited to 4 players.
- No voice-chat at all and no keyboard during missions. Communication is essential for harder hunts, making this a pretty big negative.

This is what I would like to hear :D
I'm afraid that Capcom will take it too seriously when they add more story to MH, but I guess I'm wrong huh?

There is a very long running joke about the state of your eyebrows. No, it's not serious at all. :p

Damn whats up with the nerfed communication? No voice chat sucks but you can't say anything during battles? So lame.

Well, the 6.5/10 from Gaming Nexus is at least a bit funny to read:

The combat is the most frustrating aspect of Monster Hunter 4, which is terrible because clearly combat is supposed to be the cornerstone of the game. The attack animations are all extremely slow, and there's no way to cancel them. What this means is that most of the time, attacks will miss because of the terrible camera, and then it takes a painfully long amount of time for the attack to be over so you can re-position yourself in a different direction, only to more than likely miss again.

Damn! this image is one page too early!

Finally the wait is almost over!

3U was my first Monster Hunter and I played for 300+ hours and did every single quest, arena hunt and all DLC. This is now one of my favourite franchises.

Online play is going to completely destroy me

You can still 'say' pre-canned shoutouts. Stuff like 'Good job', 'Sorry', 'I'm setting up a trap'. You can edit the shoutouts in the gathering hall. So it is possible to communicate, but I often found myself in situations were none of my edited shoutouts could convey what I wanted to say.

This is the writer's first MH game, yeah?

Imagine playing with the Great Sword when you're a good Dual Blades player. But worse.
It makes me wonder: out of those many weapons, does the writer out of bad luck choose great sword as his first weapon? There is tutorial mission where they teach you other weapon, including LS and DB that perfectly fitting for anyone who can't stand the cumbersome nature of GS. Or does he not bother to checked other weapon too? That's very unfortunate of him though.
How essential is the 2nd analog for this game?

Very essential, especially if you're going the use Insect Glaive.

not at all. the camera will definitely need some time getting used to, but after a few hours it becomes 2nd nature.
MH3U on the 3ds was my first game after I stayed away from videogames for about 3 years and I never felt that the controls are bad or too difficult.

Very essential, especially if you're going the use Insect Glaive.

I can't speak for the full game, but I managed to solo gore magala in 8 minutes with the IG w/o having a second analog.

My hype is surging.

It's actually a shame that it is launching the same day as the hardware since I won't be playing it until:

1) My new system is in my hands
2) The transfer process is complete
3) The game is downloaded

I'm getting sick, so fuck this week, but I'll be dammed if I'm not excited for this! I've been waiting for what seems like forever. We're almost there!

I main the Glaive and I've been doing okay without the second stick. The only thing I can't do is shoot pheromones. I prefer to get the juice directly with R+X though. But yeah, I'll be getting the new 3DS anyway.

Then perhaps I'm getting too reliant with the camera after all of those 200 hours of playing it on the Wii U lol

I'm sure the 2nd analog will help with the IG (getting a n3ds myself and will main the IG), but it's not necessary. I've put 150 hours into the 3ds version of MH3U before I moved to the Wii U version. While having the 2nd analog was a nice addition, ultimately I didn't use it very much and relied on L-tapping. I guess it only matters which you grew accustomed to.

Shooting pheromones is unreliable even with a 2nd stick. You might hit the part you want with the pheromone, but this doesn't mean the insect will always gather from this part as it will fly straigt to the marked point. If it hits another part on its way, it'll gather from that part.

Hmm okay I was gonna get Majora but I completed it back in the day and Im really feeling a loot game right now. Might have to buy this baby finally.

Not liking Insect Glaive without a second analog stick to aim the kinsect for pheromones, it's probably the same with ranged weapon aiming. Other weapons that don't rely on precise aiming should be fine though.

Yeah, shooting also makes you stand still, which is never a good idea. I do have trouble getting the red juice from some monsters like Gravios and Deviljo. Their heads are too high. I would appreciate shooting pheromones for those fights. I cope with it right now by bringing them down with a mount and then getting the juice while they're lying on the ground.

In the demo I'm mostly used R+X for the buffs, but still having great difficulties to maximizes it potential (though in the end, my IG run is always faster than my LS run).

Yeah, I'm accustomed with second analog stick which makes tapping L is out of question for me in the heat of battle since moving the camera with analog stick already doing its job. When I later double on MH3U 3DS version, tapping with the L and semi lock-on proves to be sufficient. At least in land battle, but even then I'm having difficulties when aiming for specifics body part.

And apart from being accustomed to the camera control, I think my hand is also having great difficulties in playing heavy action game like MH3U. When people said "does second stick necessary?" this CPP popped out into my mind, which is a very great for its second stick addition and more comfortable ergonomics.

To be fair, every weapon in MH is kinda slow. The combat is made with uninterruptable animations in its DNA, I can totally understand someone who likes to "mash" being thrown off at first.

But it's a bad look on a professional review.

EDIT :

My review so far is "PLZ Amazone, send that shit early to me"/10

I put 100+ hours into the non-U MH4 on the OG XL and had 0 problems with playing without the second stick. The touchscreen d-pad gets the job done.

My review: http://www.wiitalia.it/2015/02/10/monster-hunter-4-ultimate/

9/10

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate seems to be the best episode for the series so far (at least if you're not a TV-screen slave): content-wise is huge, the attention dedicated to the traditional element of the brand is still very high, new monsters and weapons are nice, while the new structure of the levels is 100% approved and in fact we hope they are here to stay (unlike the water levels of MHTri).
Under the technical point of view the game delivers, with good framerate, visual complexity and variety, and the game gives also sense to the new hardware revisions considering the improved load times, textures and the better camera controls.
So, unless you really care about yuor real life, don't miss this gem: once you'll start exploring Monster hunter 4 Ultimate world, it will be hard to quit it!
