NPD Sales Results for January 2015 [PS4 #1, Nintendo Numbers, XB1 Minimum]

Presumably the Xbox One was still the cheaper console, with a free bundled game for the majority of the month? I'm quite surprised to see the PS4 back on top. Will be interesting to see if it's the case in February too, or if that one week back at the normal price really did it in for the Xbox One.

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
More software sold per console sold. This could be less software in absolute numbers.

Made up numbers:
XB1: 150k consoles and 300k games. (2 games per console)
PS4: 250k consoles and 400k games. (1.6 games per console)

XB1 has more games sold per console, XB1 wins!

Why are people trying to downplay attach rate? As if that isn't one of the actual most important numbers to look at for publishers?

And there were people who believed that the Xbone could sell more than the PS4 in January, even before they brought the price back down again to $349.

Is there something I'm missing? Didn't they sell more software?
I'd bet that no, because if it would have been the case they would have said it clearly.

Instead, they said that MS sold more games per console, but considering PS4 sold more consoles even having a lower ratio PS4 still may have sold more games. Which I bet it's the case.

Well, it's important (not the most important) the LTD tie ratio, not the monthly one. It becomes important once you compare big numbers. If you sold 4 games and 3 consoles aren't doing a better job than someone who sold 3M games and 4M consoles.

They highlighted it because didn't have anything else better to highlight, and did it in this way to make some people think that XBO sold more games than PS4 this month, which I'd say it isn't the case.

Just tracking through Amazon it does not look like $349 is the right price for the Xbox One. They took November and December at $329 with bundled games. I'm not sure what they can do at this point to increase mindshare, especially that Sony started bundling two high-profile games in February.

They're not winning Feb either the way it looks, and it will have the $349 price the entire month.

Whenever the PS4 goes to $299, it's probably going to be a slaughter.

I'd guess September, unless something unexpected happens.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???

More *retail games sold. NPD doesn't track digital purchases.

The most important number for publishers?

The Vita is back baby!

Well I said ONE of but yes as a matter of fact, how else do you have claim Vita still getting games?

Also it isn't just the monthly tie, xbox has always had higher attach rate. Each platform has its strengths.

Dat Microsoft pr.

They could have sold One console, but that one person buys 10 games and their statement would still be true.

Masters of spin.

I realize this is not the prediction thread, but --

oh WOW, Evolve is bombing on Amazon so far.

Horrible reviews, bad sales rankings for a brand new release, and sinking fast.

Just like it was hard to imagine Xbox One remaining at $399.99 for very long into 2015, I have to suspect the current "promotion" is going to stick around. If it gives them good competitive footing and can be made up for with increased software sales, they will keep it going. Easier to see now why Sony elected not to go crazy with holiday promotions.

Good first month for Dying Light. Warner Bros is really on a roll lately. Things will become very interesting again when we see what happens in February and March.

I'm not surprised at all. Price isn't the X1s only issue, perhaps now people will start seeing that

I don't trust user reviews for a game like that, most of them probably haven't played it. I think it's just people angry about the DLC.

No it isn't, not if the user base is as small as Vita's.

That's the joke.

He's saying that you have to take into consideration both the total number out there and the attach rate. If Sony sells 10mil PS4s and the attach rate is 2, and MS sells 7mil XBOs and the attach rate is 2.5, Sony is still more attractive. If the MS attach rate is 2.9, MS is.

Because people that decide to bring games to the Vita are irrational and are driven to compete against the best game on the platform Kick & Fennick to prove to their old mentor that they can also create amazing games.

Obviously an exercise in futility.

It's not getting horrible reviews though?

I don't think anybody is doing that. Just showing the confused people what it means and that PS4 could still lead in total software sales.

Yeah I see one at #1 right now. And those PSN cards are discount cards for the PlaySation Store. I don't even think Sony does PSN cards like MS does XBL cards.

They do. It's number 17.

Really dumb that MS didn't lower the price of the Kinect bundle in January and are only doing it now for just two weeks. Killed momentum raising the price in January. Stock has also been more of an issue than it should be at this point, especially at Amazon.

I had an exchange with Bgamer in which he believed that the Xbone had opportunity to do so. It was before MS announced the price drop.

I simply said it was possible. Never said it would happen and said many times that it was stupid for MS to increase the price.

My logic when it came to our discussion was seemingly in tune with a good amount of multiplats doing better on XB1 though (people getting games that their friends got for Christmas).

Kudos to Dying light. I hope their reversal concerning the preorder exclusive is noticed by other devs and pubs. I went from not interested in it to buying it release week. Great game.

Batman is bigger of course, but not 10x.

The Witcher is a substantial launch, will sell much more than you think.
Haven't the first two Witcher games done 3 million combined? 3 will do OK but the Arkham series is huge, even among casual players. 10x is exaggerating of course but there's a big gap there.
