Weren't there "The Order" ads running all day on Super Bowl Sunday? I don't know why people think they aren't putting promotional dollars behind this. If you want to question their tactics, that's fine, but I don't buy that they aren't promotiong this specific game.

The problem with "cinematic experiences" is they don't last very long. A mega blockbuster movie released on Blu-ray may have two or three takes of the movie (alt cut or director's commentary or "behind the scenes experience") and some extras for somewhere between 4-6 hours of content. But they cost $20-30. The rumor is that TO:1866 is about 5 hrs for a fast paced run through. I'm sure you can stretch that, but the gameplay is not going to have legs, if I had to guess. This is the kind of thing that would make me wait and not pay full price for the game on day 1. I am definitely going to buy it at some point though.

The length complain is so unrefined, the price of the game will drop overtime so the correlation between money invested and time played is always changing. The easiest thing in the world is to wait until its ar a price you are willing to play.

The human AI on default difficulty - aka medium - has been non-threatening. I've been sitting back and pulling off headshots using pistols with ease. I've only died once so far and that was against the Lycan from the E3 demo during an insta-death QTE sequence. Hoping the challenge ramps up.

Why not play it on hard if medium is too easy?

I'm not sure that a face paced run through of this game would even be possible. There are scenarios where you literally cannot run or move faster than a walking pace. The only way to speed things up would be to remove searching for the newspapers and other little collectible items.

At this point I'll save that for a second play through.

Was watching a few streams on twitch earlier and the game does look like it has some pretty cool action set pieces...i really think that this game will be one of those big dumb guilty pleasure games...i just pre-ordered

im still not sold on bloodbourne so my money is staying put for the moment

I presume it means not dying a lot, and if there are choices, branches and optional events, you only do 1 of the former and skip that latter.

It's about 9 to 10 hours.
At least be honest.

It's 5 1/2 to 10+.

Depends on how you play it seems.

I tend to look at every freaking square inch of a game. It would probably be an 8-12 hour game if I play it.

I spent like 15-20 minutes just looking around the house at the beginning of TLoU, lol.

What is the deal if I may ask? Exclusives always have more heated threads but the Order seems to inspire even more vitriol than others.

think someone answered this in the other thread with something along the lines of

ps4 exclusive
cinematic vs gameplay divide
linear vs open world divide
unproven studio (for console space so no benefit of the doubt)
pc gamers somehow don't like how good the graphics are

maybe some other points i think i dont remember now. its like everything coming together in a high profile game which has amazing graphics so it gets a lot of attention from everyone and given what the game is its a lightning rod for controvery from all those 5 angles. its like the perfect storm.

Not a statement but a question.

How come games like Walking Dead, Gone Home and Life is Strange get a pass on the gameplay front but a game like the Order gets absolutely abused for it.

Is it due to the presence of weapons? The lack of dialogue options? The setting? Marketing?

I'm just trying to understand. While those games do get shit on at times by people that are like, "eh this isnt a game!" It never gets it to this level.

Any ideas or theories?
None of those are AAA tentpole exclusives. Niche games can do odd things with gameplay, especially when they're not $69.99 (Canadian pricing) new.

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!
Not every game needs multiplayer.
Not gonna lie, would love the chance to thermite rifle another player in the face in a Victorian London style map. Would be a really nice change of pace for MP. Or maybe a unique MP mode where a team of players have to hunt another player who's an untransformed half breed among a group of people. Would be a nice little bit of fun.

not entirely true. heavy rain and beyond are AAA but don't get shit on as much. they do but most either go not my type of game and move on . the problem with order seems to be its neither here (heavy rain, telltale style) nor there (gears of war, regular tps). It's like this weird combination with bits of both. The more I see of this game I can definitely get what the studio meant by they had a grand vision of the game and has to pick what they could do. I think their idea is solid and their engine obviously is great adn the lore/story seems good. But in order to pull this idea off fully and appease everyoen (story plus gameplay ppl) they will need a much bigger team (longer game, more of everything , mp etc etc)

Thanks for the impressions Rapier, sounds awesome.

Can't wait to play it.

Just finished the Lycan encounter that's been shown at E3. The visuals seem to have been upgraded; it looks incredible. The fight itself reminds me of RE4; very visceral and hard hitting. I think this game will be very divisive; I like slow burn, atmospheric games, which The Order most certainly is. Those who crave constant, in your face action will probably be disappointed, because it's just not that type of game. The real star of the show is the universe itself; the settings, the characters, the way the story is told bit by bit instead of just flooding you with information. If someone were to walk in on you playing this, at first glance they would think you were watching a movie, which is what I believe RAD was aiming for. It looks eerily lifelike at times. I'm playing on Hard, with aim assist off, and I've died about 10 times so far.

Sounds great!

Mind enlightening me on what's so "embarrassing" about my post then? I stand 100% behind my rationale on the matter. I can pay a full $60 bucks for other media and get the same length of content I would for a fully priced "short" game.

You know, it was my bad going there, a big part of it due to me likely skimming the post. Apologies.

I do think there's a big difference between films (which can be a bit pricey for what they are too) and games. It's more about looking at what is there within the field. Films typically range from an hour 30 to 3 hours depending on what it is. There's all the extras involved, and then you have all the formats. Despite all these things, films tend to have a more standardized market than what games do, where there are often extreme gaps from one to another despite the retail end of things having a standard price in most cases.

REmake for example just received a REmaster release, and you can play it and look at the amount of post-game content and encouragement for replayability. It can be ran through in 4 hours quite easily if you know what you're doing, but there's a lot of incentives and flexibility in how you approach and revisit the game.

I think there's a lot of flaws in the AAA space in offering content for the asking price, whether it be a bunch of in-game padding or cases like this and Titanfall where the content is sparse in comparison to its peers. The content may be excellent (like Titanfall and from what I hear of Evolve), but it's still a part of an extremely competitive market to where people expect the most out of their purchase in said market.

Not that I have major issues in this case. Enjoyed Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls, Uncharteds (never played the mp in those), and from what I've seen of The Order 1886 I'll be pleased again and already anticipating a sequel announcement by E3 2016. But I don't think most people just look at the value in that way, nor do I think they merely should do so.

Nice impressions but no MP makes this a $39.99 game for me. Just can't spend that much on SP games. Weird, thought this would have been their Gears.

Added multiplayer is not a mandatory just like titanfall non existant SP. In case of DA:I it even like a Free to play game.

For me i'm interested in the Order and i think it's a very good interactive and cinematic movie, 5 hour minimum at it. But i cannot buy it yet because i already bought New 3ds Monhun Edition and i cannot bought time :p

Or i just want the digital but there is promotion for the retail version http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KFZ6LW6. Choice choice choice.

One thing I've noticed; not one time have I had issues with the black bars. It's been a nonissue, whereas with The Evil Within I was bothered by it and never really got used to it. The action in TO is framed very well, and never feels claustrophobic.

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
But even more so, Ninja Gaiden can be played badly. Heavy Rain cant. So you can watch a person on Youtube playing NG horribly. But you can also watch them playing it skillfully. It will be completely different both times. But in Ninja Gaiden you need to experience the thrill of playing yourself. The controls, the "feel" of it to get that enjoyment.

Heavy Rain you don't. Just watch playthroughs of each ending done and you've played it all without getting the platinum.
I'm convinced you are committing to a logical fallacy here, but just to address the most obvious thing: HR can absolutely be played badly (if someone can't figure what to do for example they can get stuck for minutes just walking around randomly, or they just keep failing the QTE ) and you also need to experience the thrill of making choices in the game, or even controls (sawing scene to name the most obvious one) to be able to judge it fully.

Again, the problem (for me) with the Order is not it's length. The problem with the order is how it decides to balance it and what to do with it.Not a fair comparisons as all of these games, at their time, while having similar length, were either very creative with their gameplay at the time (usually offering something fresh) or offered variation in their design and basically worked well with what they set out to do.

Before I might get smash'd because the thread seems to get heated. I don't even dislike the order. I'm just mostly disappointed. What could've been for a GREAT game that would've lasted in my memory for a long time was a bit let down because it TELLS you about all these great concepts and ideas (The order itself and how the knights work, the werewolves, the weapons, the characters, and that thing that happens near the end) but barely does anything creative with them either in terms of level design, pacing, synergies and interaction. It's almost like the game doesn't care that you're here.

I really wish the devs will continue to support the game because it has huge potential. But my personal opinion is that they'll need to revisit maybe part of their core design if they wish for the IP to flourish. Because once the magic of the impressive visuals and polish goes away and we're more into the new generation, they won't be able to count solely on their cinematic presentation to attract more people. It doesn't seem very future-proof

I also think that the critic of length is ridiculous though. Like you pointed out, other games were the same length and were magistral. Some of my favs like Silent Hill 2, SotC, Vanquish and Bayonetta or even TloU aren't that longer. It's just how they work with that given time
Good post. There definitely are things to be improved on.

RAD really should have slapped together a quick gears of war esq multiplayer mode. I have nothing against cinematic games. But a 7 hour game that doesn't offer a lot of replayability isn't my thing.

Sorry, I think my own post was inviting commentary on the community I don't want so I deleted it. Stick to the game. :)

6-10 hour linear cinematic experience. I no incentive to not just rent it.

I used to be of the same mindset as you, until I realized that I only play 2-3 multiplayer games exclusively. Its very hard to switch for me and dedicate time into a lot of games at once to play online. At most, I would play a couple matches to see how it is and thats it, back to the old faithful.

There are ways to extend the life of a game beyond just multiplayer.

I doubt it would happen but maybe later in down the road its something they could add?

I get that they didn't plan on having MP at all and I appreciate the focus on the SP. I also understand that money and man power probably factored in. I wonder if its possible that sometime down the line once sales have slowed right down if they would consider adding something like that to bring people back and get more people on board.

Or would they do more of a SP story type DLC? I have no clue. Maybe they wont do either and just be hard at work on a sequel.

I think it's more like Uncharted. The sequel will have it. But I'm surprised Sony greenlit a game without it. Tough sell these days.

Should we be getting a launch trailer this week? There was some buzz on a possibility of one in the latter half of the week (before those threads all imploded), but I personally haven't heard of anything.

That is true !

One thing that I can only applaud RAD is that damn, they've absolutely nailed at least the visual and atmosphere they were going for.

To say something very positive, and also as a pc gamer who has a really good machine, the game is just gorgeous and pulls you in almost immediately in that sense. The attention to detail, in terms of visuals but also little goodies you can examine just makes part of my 3d artist brain melt, as to think how many hours they had to spend on very tiny things that you sometimes barely notice

And the black bars were no big inconvenience, contrary to TEW. It seems more tightly designed around it

I think they have trouble accepting that other people can enjoy things they don't. It's almost like they set out on a mission to show these people the "error of their ways," while occasionally plugging some other game they feel is better. It happens a lot in the music scene, actually. People look down on others for having differing tastes and feel like it's a result of ignorance or a lack of experience in that particular sphere.

I hope I don't come off as like you describe. I have been posting a lot in Order threads, mostly because it fascinates me. Like Y2Kev pointed out, there's an interesting debate between the cinematic/non cinematic players. As someone who enjoys both but usually I'm very conscious about the balance between cinematic and gameplay, the Order was kind of a rollercoaster ride for me and I just find it very compelling to talk about, in positive or negative.

Anyway I think this'll be my last post for this thread as I've rambled long enough
