I've started to think a lot of the heat this game is getting on here is because a lot of people had incredibly high hopes for the game and the hype was driven up dramatically by two pseudo insiders on here whom were fed drips on inside information and promised that The Order would be a genre defining game.
Once the wool came off everyone's eyes, it's was people thought it was from the first previews.
Me too. I expected to see many "WTF" moments throughout the game :|
Speaking of which, did you see any spectacular setpieces moments like in Uncharted 2, nbnt? The Order is inspired by U2 so I think there must be some in this game
He's credited for it, but it's a team effort with him, Cory and some other SSM folks. I remember that it was Cory Barlog who wrote the main story script for Ghost of Sparta.
And while The Order is unquestionably the brainchild of Ru, it's not like he didn't have some co-writing help for the game. Kirk Ellis is after all, involved in the script as well.
There's many reasons why a story could potentially fall-flat or doesn't feel very inspiring/exciting compared to its top-of-class peers.
We can't leave our PC brethren behind. They have also being a very vocal base, specially when it comes to graphics. When all else fails, gameplay. If that fails, game-length. The goalpost always moves.
Is anything that he wrote above actually wrong though? Seems that stuff is implemented to varying degrees, the impact of which will greatly depend on the player. Eg I care about looking at these cloth physics or I don't.
Thank you. On a Mobile, so this search was difficult for me to do but I knew all this stuff was out there. This is just the soft body physics stuff but any order thread is full of it
Ya. Still a lot to be seen. Lots of destructible cover (physics) in certain parts, where huge amounts of shit fly around as you shoot (cloth, soft-body ragdolls, glass, insane particle effects, etc). I think once people see a real battle happen on screen, they'll appreciate it all.
In regards to your comment nib: it is an odd situation. The GI preview paints a lot of things in an odd manner, then combine this with the other comments as found in threads.
For example:
1.Everything in the world is rendered with soft body physics
2. Metal beams react for example to magnetic forces, bending and shifting in real time
3. Incredible attention to detail: Lens flare catches light as you rotate the camera, oil lamps flash independently in an underground scene, light bouncing off every object provides uncanny realism, insane attention to material detail like wood, leather and cloth.
4. Clouds and particles of dust float around lamp flames, subtely settling down on the camera lens
Less fancy versions of this:
1. (we still have no idea what this means really) Ragdolls
2. Everywhere? Or just when it is story critical ("Galahad, we cannot get past this wall! What do?!"). Am I going to be using this dynamically in fights often to make this game be different than others?
3. We have lens flares, point lights, and IBL
4. Volumetric lighting, camera lens dust
I really think the way people phrase game comment or engine features lends to it sounding radically more hype inducing than should be written by the press (if the press was more techncially or critically minded).
I just can't understand how any developer can make a bad cover game after, gears. Uncharted and the last of us.
Just copy the cover system and controls and you're golden.
The gameplay was such a low point, it was basic. Solid but limited.
Ok, just finished the game (took me about 9 hours on normal). I suck at writing impressions so I'll keep it short.
I didn't find the story anything special. But it's good enough, good characters with top notch VA and great facial animations.
Gameplay wise, it's solid. Satisfying gunplay, great weapons, decent AI. My main issue with the mechanics is that when you're close to a cover, Galahad would automatically stick to it, and that really irritated me. There's a button for taking cover if I wanted to, so why is there a contextual system on top of that? And there's no way to turn this off.
The disappointing: The unique weapons are so underutilized. The half breed encounters, both number and design wise.. What a missed opportunity.
Overall I liked it, I was craving for an AAA TPS and this game delivered, with an amazing atmosphere and solid gameplay. But just as I expected, it was honestly nothing special. 7/10 (If you wanna know my scale:
1-5=different levels of crap, 6=decent, 7=good, 8=great, 9=amazing, 10=The GOAT and it's reserved for TLG

I think RAD should consider to do at least a 4 player coop horde mode. That will help the replay value of it. I'm still buying it day one. RAD is one of my favorite devs and I love he GoW they made.

Right, so Shinobi and Mystery Insider Number 2 said that it was 'genre-defining' and everybody had 'incredibly high hopes' which were only high and hopey because the two insiders said some things? I don't think Dictator93 has got you off the hook yet, maybe you could start hunting your 'proof' when you get back to your PC. The positive swing in regards to this game came after the long-form Playstation Experience demo, as far as I'm concerned, not because of Shinobi.
And honestly, nothing's really changed because the Order threads have always been shitty and continue to be shitty. This one was specifically created for Gaf impressions and it's become yet another honey trap for shit-bees in no time. It's a shame, I wanted a spoiler-free impressions thread to read working up to Friday.
I mean I own one and it seems like a competent shooter, that excels in atmosphere and gunplay, but I have played those before, with better value propositions.

Not everything makes it to the game the way it was originally envisioned. That is a risk everyone has to understand when taking leaks into consideration.

I don't know that the last is totally fair (especially in the light of UC2). I think now that they've done the main grunt work with the engine, the next game could easily hit 10 hours. Maybe that's just wishful thinking though. ¯\_(ツ_/¯
Sounds pretty good, but I'm gonna take a wait and see approach on this one. Just not sure it's gonna be worth the $60 (ok, a lot more than that here in Sweden) on day 1. "By no means short" doesn't really mean much when it's one man's subjective opinion. Perhaps a 6-hour experience is sufficient for him. For me it really isn't at that price.

Phrasing yourself, or himself in shinobi's case, as being somehow more privied to stuff most of GAF has not seen and then being coy about it seems something like (IMO) a PR guy on a forum would do.
Those are just my two cents. I think there would be a lot less tears if people did not end posts with winking-emotes and insider insinuations.
I would say your source needs to look at Uncharted 2, TLOU to know that his/her statement is wrong. RAD may have goofed up but the bolded is not necessarily true.

this is very presumptuous. I may have bough this game if it was RE4 tier(played through that game at least ten times) or TLOU tier of replayability but the ratio of cutscenes to gameplay and my hatred of being unable to skip them make this a hard sale for me at $60
The GAF impressions are influencing me to pick it up when its on sale though
I quick searching shinobi's named and hyperbolic words (insane and crazy) and these popped up.

I've been hyped for this game from day one, I've followed the threads and they've all been awful - as far as I remember - until the Playstation Experience, and they've been awful since the game got picked up early.
I think your reading of this game been solely hyped by insiders and then everybody been let down all of a sudden is way out, that's all.

Was he wrong with what he said though? I haven't played it yet, but have we seen the best of it in the PSX demo? Are there no parts with NPCs and 'crazy vistas'? Was Shinobi and the other person solely responsible for hyping this game with lies, or exaggerations? Because that's what's been said by gamechanger.
I'm fully aware Shinobi says some stuff, but the only people who usually get hyped at that are the ones already hyped, he's more like a cheer leader for fans than Sony PR plant/astro turfer to me.
I hope people realize this is their Uncharted 1. They built the entire engine from mere scraps and setting up the world, the style and the history. It will always be a bit of a shaky start.
It's exciting to see what they will do in the future and hopefully Sony will see their promise (like ND) and let them make another. It'd be a real shame if they had to go back to the drawing board.

I dont think they will. Unless sales absolutely tank but I think this game will sell and review well enough.
They've already got the engine, world, basic gunplay, VO and story already set. Just touch up a few things. Take the criticism and make the next one better.
Uncharted 1 was actually VERY shallow. Then you had UC2. Which just took everything to the next level.
The thing that disappointed me from impressions is the apparent lack of big set-piece moments in the game. I assumed as the developers were inspired by Uncharted 2 we'd get some big bombastic set-pieces here.
Guess there's Uncharted later this year for that though, and Tomb Raider to a lesser extent
Ha they need to improve bullet-time mode in sequels of this game. The feel of watching enemies's bodies being teared apart in slow-mo is definitely satisfying.
