PS2 Hidden gems

10591_front.jpg

Never finished it but had fun while playing.

this one is cool, in some ways feels like a progenitor to valkyria chronicles too.

game is absurdly long and pretty slow paced however.

If you're looking for a party game or some couch co-op you NEED to play this:

It's the most fun 4 people can have without taking their clothes off.

I always saw this in used bins and never picked it up.... You have convinced me with ATB Tim Burton fun.
Shadow King Okage was actually one of the very last PS2 games that were printed on a blue CD (Rez was another one). Because it was so small. My oldest PS2 used to sound like a washing machine when booting this one up. All other games were on DVD already.

Not sure if the .hack and Dark Cloud games would be considered hidden gems, but yeah.

Also...

Cool little survival horror title that's especially fun for X-Files junkies.

This is actually a solid game. Definitely check it out if you're an X-Files fan.

Yeah this game was good, plays a lot like classic Resident evil games I remember it being very difficult and I was never able to finish the first episode, you're even able to play as both Scully and Mulder for each "episode", Scully is even able to do autopsy's.

I love the X-Files and had meh memories concerning the PS1 point and click game... Looks like I'm checking out this one though! Survival horror is my favorite genre probably.

Very cool cover based shooter based on a 2000 AD comic series. What was cool about it was that you could take control of different allies and use different weapons by placing your biochip in different weapons

Nobody has posted this yet, best Pokemon game on the PS2, IMHO :D

Ditto with Magic Pengel (hurray for dick monsters), War of the Monsters (loved getting a radio tower was it? and impaling it onto your opponent), and Steambot Chronicles (still, sadly, unplayable on any PS2 emulator).

I don't suggest using the default controls, mess with it a bit and find the scheme best for you. Once the controls are cleared up this game is a blast. Who needs World of Tanks?

Since this is a good PS2 thread, does anyone have any suggestions on how I might go about playing PAL games on a US or JP PS2 console? Can the games be forced to 60 Hz?

I see loads of PAL games for dirt cheap and wouldn't mind grabbing some but the 50 Hz stuff and the need to buy yet another PS2 (I simply don't want to hook up a third system).

Not legally. You would still need to make sure the game supports a switch to 60 Hz. Some do, many do not. Easier to just get a PAL PS2.

Depends on what you mean by legal.

Like, I'm open to something akin to a homebrew loader. I use one for Gamecube which allows circumvention of region locks AND forcing of resolutions and refresh rates (like 240p support for Game Boy Player).

I see something called "swap magic" but it seems to have a component that requires you to stick something physical in your PS2?

I can get a PAL PS2, of course, but really, 50 Hz just sucks. It ruins games and most PS2 games don't seem to support 60 Hz natively. Using the GC homebrew loader it's possible to force 50 Hz PAL games (without PAL60 support) to full 60 Hz.

A weird post-apoc jRPG with a big world to explore. In fact, it requires you to explore heavily to really get the story. Tons of endings, lots of bosses to fight, dogs to give shiny coats, and tanks to outfit.

YES! Love this game though I need to delve further into it... glad to see it get its due.

The PS2 had so many hidden gems it was ridiculous. Even games from large publishers and/or famous series were overlooked because of the smashing success of its biggest games.

I nominate Wild Arms 4 and Suikoden Tactics. While they're not -excellent- games, they're still a lot of fun with cool twists on the standard formulas, though they were pretty overlooked by RPG fans.

I was going to mention Wild Arms 3, never played 4 though. Great series that well.... Felt cute, what can I say. Fun anime romps in a Wild West setting.

I have never seen a loader for PS2 that can force PAL games to 60hz.

The PS2, like the PS1 before it, is universal (but region locked), the 50/60Hz code is on the disc. It doesn't matter where your PS2 come from once you are able to start games from other regions: what you need is a disc with support for 60Hz, either a Jp/US one or a PAL with a 60Hz option. There are lists online to know if a PAL game has such option.

It also means that PAL Playstation users need to import their games to enjoy real 60Hz. Unlike SEGA users who just need to modswitch their console to enjoy 60Hz regardless of the game edition (mostly. There are exceptions sadly.)

Xenosaga Trilogy
Wild Arms series
Shadow Hearts series
Valkyrie Profile 2
Digital Devil Saga 1+2
Rygar
Shadow of Rome
.hack series
Clock Tower 3, Rule of Rose, Haunting Ground
Siren
Fatal Frame series

such a great console. you could play 100 games and still miss out on alot of great titles.

Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks (awesome co-op), Spartan Total Warrior, Gun Griffon 1 & 2, Grim Grimoire, Lego Star Wars (those 60 fps days), the original Guitar Hero, Aero Elite Combat Academy, Nights into Dreams (Jap), Outrun 2, Shadow of the Colossus and Grand Prix Challenge (best F1 game ever).

It's a bit of plastic you use to pull the disc tray out and swap for another game while the boot disc is idling. You will need to remove the face plate from a PS2 disc drawer to use it.

It was the only way I could play Katamari Damacy in Europe legitimately as it wasn't coded to display in 50Hz IIRC so based on this I *think* the PS2 defaults to whatever output is on the disc. Can't say for sure though as most PAL TVs of that era were pretty good at displaying any output.

The timing of this thread was pretty great! I've been focusing on collecting 6th Gen games lately and picked up quite a few of the games mentioned in this thread within the last 1-2 weeks.

6th Gen games (minus the Gamecube) are in a sweet spot right now! A lot of these games can be found at a bargain right now.

Shadow Hearts: Covenant. I remember it won all the "Best Game No One's Played" awards that year. One of the best RPGs on the PS2, and I've played all the ones that matter.

i have this and one of the best things i every bought in gaming. it got me in to importing games

Did anyone mention Freedom Fighters?
Not sure but definitely should be mentioned!

Glad to see Star Wars Bounty Hunter ... Only drawback with that game is the camera auto-correct swung way too quick for me, gave me motion sickness.

Saw Contra: SS pictured, great game. Also like Neo Contra.

As much as people adore Red Dead Redemption, I am a really big fan of Red Dead Revolver. The original rarely gets love in RDR threads.

Question: What is the best way to play these games now? Just buy a PS2 or try to get a backwards compatible PS3 for slightly better graphics? (Is that even a thing?)

Also, it was my first foray into HoMM... So it has a special place in my heart. On that subject, what current HoMM games play most like it?:

Heroes_of_Might_and_Magic_-_Quest_for_the_Dragon_Bone_Staff_Coverart.png

I was always upset that they used the HoMM name for that game.

The precursor to the HoMM series was a game called "King's Bounty", and Quest for the Dragon Bone Staff is essentially a remastered version of that game.

It is actually a "remaster" of the Genesis version of King's Bounty.

The graphics are new, but everything else is 100% identical, all the way down to the game rules and the stats.

Oddly, I think the Genesis version is better because it doesn't have the loading time.

Games looks great, but plays poorly.

Some great picks here ladies and gents!

I'll throw my tuppence worth in...

I think the PS3s with BC were said to be pretty unreliable and prone to breaking. Whereas my 2001-era PS2 is still kickin'. I'd go for that with component cables. Looks good on my HDTV.

BC PS3 if you can get your hands on one. Unlimited saves with virtual memory cards, deinterlacing directly in the framebuffer before it gets to your screen, wireless controls, and upscaling options. Lots of TVs have bad upscaling for interlaced signals coming from an actual PS2, which results in some games looking absolutely horrid on modern displays.

This is true. The lead-free solder and cheap thermal paste are the main culprits. If mine ever breaks, I'll have it professionally reballed, but having the ability to play three Gens worth of content is worth it for me.

I've heard the bc ps3 has input lag?

There may be a very small amount introduced by the upscaler, but the same can be said about playing on an actual ps2 as well because the TV has to deinterlace and upscale the image as it's being piped in at its native resolution.

I've played PS2 games on both systems on my TV, and I actually detected more input delay when playing from the PS2 than the PS3.

There's no way that playing a bcps3 is less laggy then a ps2 at 480i wired on the same modern tv.

Little off topic but when the ps3 controllers are wired via usb(to charge) does the signal pass through the usb or is it still Bluetooth?
