DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition |OT| ...And I've got a bigger change log

So am I supposed to be invisible except for my sword during the second secret mission or is my game just glitching like crazy?

I can't even finish the mission because I can't touch the cross thing at the end ;_;

that's definitively a bug

I just tried doing it again and the same thing happened (the floating sword in the middle is Dante)

Ninja Theory pls :(

Also on Xbone for reference.

For people first starting the game, Nephilim + Turbo Mode on + Hardcore mode is the way to play.

Also, I've noticed there are a lot of changes to lost soul and key locations. And they also changed the acid pool fight in the Virility factory. When the two tyrants come out, there is no acid on the ground. Or maybe that shows up on SoS and up? I can't remember.

Anyway, got up to Phineas, and the highest rank I got thus far on a mission was A. Hardcore mode surely makes getting SSS ranking on missions really difficult.

So it's like Tony Hawk where you need to land the trick for the score to be maximized because of multipliers in action?
Yea it's similar to that but the main multiplier is how many moves/hits you performed before landing the finisher and you get additional bonus if you land the killing blow with that finisher. It also factors in enemy health into the equation, high health = more style gain on finisher.

There's a lot of strategy in combo planning and enemy management to optimize style points. And because decay rates are fast you need to be on an enemy non stop. It's gotten to the point where in between dodges I am forced to shoot something so I don't lose ranks as fast because even though the style meter is still there if it disappears from the screen, the rate of decay is even higher if the bar is off screen. It's like the complete opposite of the original DmC style rank where you can burst your way upto S rank and then just ease up and spam whatever moves on whichever enemies because the decay rate is slow and penalties for repeating very low (in this you get penalized for repeating something even once).

It's too early to say right now but DmC DE's Style ranking system might be the best and most complex system in a DMC game yet.

Can't wait till I get my hands on this, game is looking like it's finally gonna scratch that old school action gaming itch, I really wanna try out Vergil.

before anyone says Bayo 2 I don't have a Wii U dammnit.

I noticed that, big improvement. That was one of the more annoying encounters in the original game.

For a first time player, ironically after the tutorial level, I was hoping that the game would be a little faster.

Then I saw Turbo mode and realized I wasn't the only one lol.

Turbo mode should actually be something built in. Not a choice.

DmC's combat was designed at a pace to be tolerable at 30 fps. Now that's it at 60 fps, keeping the combat pace the same as it was when it was 30 fps just doesn't feel right.

Turbo mode increases the pace of the combat to take advantage of the increased framerate. It's really how the game should be played.

That's what you get for not preordering at Gamestop!
Welcome to Amiibo hunting. Wait.

Ok, I'm in. What controller layouts are you using for lock-on without giving up on gun special button?
I couldn't think of one, but my layout is:
A - Jump
X - Melee
Y - Dodge
B - Special Melee
RB - Lock-on
RT - Shoot
LB - Demon mode
LT - Angel mode
DpadUp - change gun weapon
DpadLeft - change angel weapon
DpadRight - change demon weapon
DPadDown - Devil Trigger

It's the only solution I can come up with. I put DT on Y in DMC4. Gun special is jump and RT. Both attacks are based on DMC4 layout.

So it's like Tony Hawk where you need to land the trick for the score to be maximized because of multipliers in action?
Pretty much.

I still remember THE CLAW layout for DMC4. For Nero, a lot of people put lock-on and shoot on R1/R2 respectively. A lot of the high-level users still use that, if I recall correctly.

Anyway, I didn't really think much on redoing the layout for DmC. I'm pretty comfortable with the default, though I might put DT on D-Pad down, after looking at BumblebeeCody's layout. I'm not really feeling the L3 + R3 for activation. They don't seem to work too quickly in a pinch.

One more question, this is my first DmC game but I consider myself to be pretty decent at action games, would hardcore difficulty be too much for a new player who wants a bit of a challenge?

Sure! Definitely give it a shot if you feel you're up to it. Nephilim is a good starter difficulty if you're comfortable at action games, but Hardcore Nephilim is more challenging.

Hardcore mode on Nephilim difficulty is probably the best way to experience the game.

Can anyone confirm they fixed the standard costume ? (it would display the "DmC Dante with coat and black hair" no matter the mission, even in those where he has no coat / white strands of hair)

Cause it was really cool to see his hair evolve and it was taken out of the game after you finish it once.

Right now, while replaying the story before finishing the game once, the standard costume swaps for the right costume (cloakless, white hair strands, white hair). It would be awesome if it stayed that way.

Game is awesome.

You don't notice the horrendous AF on ps4 when you move, I give it that. Turbo and hardcore mode make a world of difference. You don't even feel like it needs a "sprint" ability anymore heh.

Jeez, the style meter's decay is super fast. A slight pause can totally lead to wrecking whatever you've built up. It actually feels harder than older games unless I'm misremembering.

I'd be in the dick
I liked the original release of the game a lot so it's awesome to see how opinions of the game have improved now that DE is out. It got so much shit prerelease.

I also use that layout. It means you can you can charge Neros gun while doing combos. That being said, even though I mainly play Nero, I still have problems doing Maximum Bet (reaching my thumb across X and B or Square and Circle).
The DmC layout us a mix of ob Dante and Nero. Left hand and left side of the pad dedicated to changing Dante(switching angel/demon + guns and weapons) while the right side is dedicated to action commands. With the inclusion ob lock-on DE layout is actually different to Vanilla. Took 30 minutes just tobthink of adjusting Vergil to lock-on(I'll post that later).

One more question, this is my first DmC game but I consider myself to be pretty decent at action games, would hardcore difficulty be too much for a new player who wants a bit of a challenge?
Yeah. It still let's you learn the mechanics if the game and go through the story without much issue.

they should've named the hardest mode "Controller Must Die".
That title is reserved for DMC4 (No Kappa)

There's two places where you can enable HCM. On difficulty select, there's a check box near the bottom of the screen to enable it. Or on the mission select screen, you can hit L1 or R1 to scroll between [diffuculty level] and their HCM equivalents. The cool thing is that you should be ale to switch between HCM and vanilla without messing up your progress.

Awesome! Thanks for the heads up. Definitely going to try it out tonight :D

Ok, Dahbomb, you win >_>

I still hate the toggle lock-on so much, but it is indeed the best way to keep my control scheme as it needs to be.

The best alternative to have hold lock-on on R1 was L1 for Shoot, Square for evade, d-pad down for Gun Special and R3 for Devil Trigger, but it gets really really really hard (as in makes my hands hurt) to cancel prop into "lvl 0 ricoshot".

It really does suck to have toggle R3 lock-on, though, hold R1 is much better to use it creatively. I love the fact that you can use a stinger in the contrary direction and lock-on in the middle and Dante will go back and attack in the enemy's direction, but using toggle this is unnecessarily difficult.

I might just end up sucking it up and having shoot on square, as impractical as it may be, just to keep the hold lock on.

RT - Shoot
LB - Demon mode
LT - Angel mode

I'm gonna kiss you, that might be the solution to my "I want hold lock-on but it doesn't work with my layout" issue.

So:

R1 lock-on
R2 shoot
L1 Demon
L2 Angel
D-pad down Gun special
R3 Devil Trigger
Square Evade.

I'll test it later.

Vergil is such a great character to play as. To be honest, I wasn't really much of a fan of playing as him in DMC3SE, but I'm loving this guy in DmC. I feel he really benefits from HCM upgrades.

Douchebag. Yes, me.
Are there changes in this that aren't in the PC SKU? Are the "new" textures just the "high" setting textures from the PC version?

Took a random look at the leaderboards last night and saw one player already went for Hell and Hell Hardcore mode. Superb stuff.

I looked at the Leaderboards last night and there was no one on the GMD/DMD Hardcore rankings (for normal there were for both).

Hell and Hell is not that difficult of a setting. The scaling of the mobs is on SoS difficulty and even though it says you die in 1 hit, you actually get 3 chances so it's like a 3 hit kill mode. That's not too different from what GMD is only the enemies start with Devil Trigger and have other bonuses...

Yeah, I'm hoping DMC4SE takes some cues from this for Vergil. I'd like to see a stance system in DMC4, if they're sticking with one weapon, of course.

I completely forgot that this was coming out until yesterday. Picked up a digital copy and decided to play a couple of missions. Ended up staying up till 4am and finishing the whole game on Nephilim. I was already a huge fan of the original but my god is it so good now. Turbo mode is absolutely perfect. The ranking system seems really hard now. My best mission score was a B. I am afraid that attempting DMD on Must Style mode will only hurt my ego.

It is a shame that this remaster doesn't seem to be getting a lot of buzz. I think the game is now good enough to stand with the greats (Bayo, NG, DMC3.) I hope that it does well enough for a new devil may cry. Between this and DMC4SE, I think that Capcom is gauging/prepping the market for a new game.

My mission scores right now are just brutal. What a hit to the pride.

Hardcore mode is a hitch. I remember getting a D mission rank on mission one on nephilim. I have never gotten a D before...ever. Not even in real life. It's gotten better now when you unlock more weapons, But Damn is it tough.

How I've missed this game. How I've also forgotten a lot of shit when it comes to dealing with the more complicated and annoying enemies.

Oh my, Son of Sparda mode is so hard, took forver to do the first 2 levels... This is going to be a long, slow, painful platinum trophy. >.>

Most are the same but the strategy for beating Dreamrunners is different now.

Blue Rages: Lock down with Roundtrip Aquila then smack them with a red weapon (new strategy, could not do this before)

Witches: Use Roundtrip to break her shield. It's harder to parry back her red swords now. You also can't keep bouncing her with jump Triangle move with Eryx anymore. The main issue is that with hard lock on the Roundtrip glitches out and sometimes does not want to hit the Witch's shield.

Heavy armor characters: Osiris Raze (charge Triangle) or Eryx charge uppercut launches them for combos. You can negate the blazing armor by charged Eryx hits as well.

Dreamrunners: Snake Eyes still parries them fine when them come out of teleport but they don't do this as often so you have to fight them honest. Charged strikes with Eryx can break their guard for a combo opportunity.

It's been getting good buzz from the hardcore fans and the media reviewed it well (slightly better than the original).

I feel like this game will not have as much buzz at start but it will build over time and the game will have legs on current gen consoles. Like if you are about to buy a new PS4 game and you look up the Metacritic scores of PS4 games... DmC DE is like #5 and is also one of the cheapest among them. If you haven't played the game it's a no brainer.

The main issue with DmC is that it was available on PS+ on PS3 and a lot of people got to try it out (or they played the demo). Most people probably don't want to play the game again and most people cannot appreciate the changes unless they have played both versions.

I'm really finding myself not using lock-on, surprisingly. It just feels really awkward given that the angel and demon weapons are also on the triggers.
