Hats off to them for their top 3, hell top 10. The rest is kind of a mess for me, but it's not my list.

I went back and looked at their top 50 of the 00's, and though that list was four times more selective than this list, I was surprised that Synecdoche, New York was no where (while The Incredibles was even on it, let alone in the middle).

Too lazy to check was Before The Devil Knows You're Dead on there?

also just noticed that Frances Ha was on netflix, so i'll have to check that out some time.

No, but I guess it should be, you say? I have yet to see it.

thanks for the link. this list has me curious in their other ones. I thought this was pretty solid even with some omissions. definitely. it was on netflix, but I think it got removed. great movie. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke are great. It's not the most original movie, but I thought it was solid. I should rewatch it soon.

That top ten is mostly a complete crock of shit imo.

And no Lost in Translation in the entire top 100? That's probably my number 1, or maybe one of Fincher's movies.

Lost in Translation is great and all but... 2003 and Sofia Coppola.

Christ it is 12 years old.

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.
No Pan's Labyrinth? The list is an instant fail.

Yeah Frances Ha @ #4 and top 5 makes this list totally legit to me. :D

Edit: I've seen it thrice in theatres, own the criterion bd/DVD combo, the ost from itunes and have an original theatrical poster framed too. :D

Interesting list for sure. I wouldn't say The Master was that great, but whatever floats yer boat. Scott Pilgrim that high makes me pretty happy though.

A Separation #2 is ok with me. Should have won the overall Best Picture Oscar. Could you imagine the uproar if they gave it to a film from Iran?

I was interested in seeing moonrise kingdom for a while but forgot about it. Should I take time out of my day to see it? I have a pretty decent backlog of movies to watch right now.

I know what they are doing. I'm just saying that This decade is 2006-2015. A decade is a 10 year interval. Nothing more.

Making a list about a period which hasn't happened is stupid.
Man what a weird thing to get hung up on, but I thought this was kinda funny that this is the first thing the wikipedia entry on decade covers:

Wikipedia said:
Although any period of 10 years is a decade, a convenient and frequently referenced interval is based on the tens digit of a calendar year, as in using "1960s" to represent the decade from 1960 to 1969.

Also, cool list. I don't necessarily agree with the positions if I were to compare it to my own list, and I would definitely put the last two Ghibli films in the top 50 (top 20 for Kaguya) but I know what to expect more or less from AV Club. Though, based on that same experience I would have bet on a different shuffling of the top 20 and there were a few surprises 100-20, but overall I think it is a good list from their pop-culture infused viewpoint.

It is a bit silly to call such a list "terrible" and then base an arguement around broad appeal though. A movie can be culturally important and boring too. But hey, it's a list so whaddya expect.

War Peaceman

Personally I think it is really weird to get hung up over the precise positions in these kinds of list. It is more about the films included and the top three or so. Complaining that number 12 belonged in the top ten is a bit meaningless.

I need to give The Master a rewatch. I remember nothing from that movie.

It's a very slow and dry film. Immaculately produced and performed. I prefer Inherent Vice, myself, despite it being a far more uneven and difficult film.

lol @ The Grey

what trash, wolf trash, animitronic wolf garbage with liam neeson starring in wolfs vs liam neeson.

zero suspense, wolves are the enemy? trash

Surprised at how much of this list I disagree with--I usually like the AV Club.

That's a very shallow reading of a film that is basically a meditation on death. The Grey is like The Fountain of wilderness/survival movies.

I agree that it is unfortunate that wolves are portrayed as man-eating beasts, but I'm willing to overlook that.

Room 237 on here has to be a joke right? It's a bunch of crazy people talking on Skype about The Shining, and they don't even articulate their conspiracies very well. It's entertaining for sure but because it's so bad.

They could drop the garbage Linklater 'films' from that list, but otherwise there's a ton of great stuff in there. Certified Copy is fantastic... The Master at #1!

What the fuck no Intolerance: Love's Struggle Through the Ages? who do they think they're kidding. this list is garbageshit

seen 19 of the top 20 so I'm at 67% total. proud D+
Wow, Maniac was robbed.
I only remember him being stabbed, not robbed.
I like how Holy Motors is probably the only french movie they['ve] seen so it has to been there.

Also the inclusion of Mysteries of Lisbon is so funny (for all the bad reasons).

The only redeeming quality of this list is Haywire , which is a great movie !

Actually it isn't. A decade is a 10 year period. If a list is made today about this decade , its between 2006-2015.
hm I see White Material, You Ain't Seen Nothin Yet, Bird People, Mysteries of Lisbon, House of Pleasures
Then again you mentioned one of those so you know that Holy Motors isn't the only French movie on the list, but you also think it's the only one they've seen somehow. idk

lmao I love the implicit criticism of the quotation marks. That Linklater's movies are so bad they aren't even movies. amazing

Some of these are straight up puzzling. Why is Skyfall on this list? IF there is to be a Bond movie on this list, it should be Casino Royale. It is better than Skyfall in almost every way (Deakins wins, though).

I've liked Linklater in the past (Slacker, Waking Life, Tape, Dazed and Confused, even School of Rock), but Boyhood is one of the worst films I've seen in a long time, and I have no interest in watching the Sunrise/Sunset series.

Poet Centuriate
Maybe Wind Rises or Kaguya might sneak in there?

Guess not, lol.

100 films and only one animated film which was at the bottom and a sequel in an incredibly popular series, mind you. We complain a lot about how the Academy Award voters don't care or know anything about animation, but folks like AV Club are part of the problem too.

Casino Royale is too old to be on this list.

I wonder if Boyhood will become one of those films that future critics reflect upon and ponder: What on earth were we thinking?

Wish Margaret made top 10. One of the most ambitious and breathtaking movies I've ever seen.

Django didn't make the list at all, either, did it?

Holy shit you're right. And I know it's just one site's list, etc. but no Birdman and Django but films like Room 237, Haywire, Magic Mike, Avengers, MI:Ghost Protocol and others is a sham.

Bernie was an excellent film, much better than comic booky schlock like Django.

It's pretty great comic book schlock. Beautiful as hell, too.

I liked Bernie a lot, and was happy to see it on the list.

Would definitely liked to have seen a lot more animation on the list. Sorta surprised Four Lions didn't make it - that's right up AV Club's alley. One of the funniest films of the last five years, definitely.

I wonder if Boyhood will become one of those films that future critics reflect upon and ponder: What on earth were we thinking?

I could see it attaining American Beauty status, yeah.

I'm glad they did 100 movies, to me the best thing about these lists is finding movies that I haven't heard of or forgot about, which the top 10 or 20 doesn't really do (The Dissolve's list only had like 10 movies that I ended up checking out)
