Yooka-Laylee becomes fastest video game project to hit $1 million on Kickstarter

Probably not the best choice of words on my part. I'm positive Microsoft and Rare are going to show us something great at E3. Killer Instinct is proof they can make a great game using a Rare IP.

Yea no worries, I did get what you were saying in general. I'm just naturally pedantic heh. I read your post and immediately thought "but wait, didn't Sega get around this much off Sonic Boom in NPD alone?" . :p

Now they could obviously do the game on a lower budget like this kickstarter... but that's hardly the sort of return they'd be "banging their head in a wall" over missing out on.

But would that broadening of their portfolio have an effect in terms of attracting a certain kind of gamer that's not interested in Halo, Forza etc. to their machine? In addition to making a fair profit compared to their smaller Investment and throwing old school Rare fans a bone.

I'm not convinced that making smaller productions that can be profitable with a similarly smaller audience, is such an unattractive proposition to a platform holder..

It's definitely not unattractive. As Sponge said, Killer Instinct is a good example of how to reintroduce IP that may not command the same market appeal as in the past. However if they hadn't made Killler Instinct, and some kickstarter for Eternal Champions performed roughly as well, I doubt they'd consider it a huge loss. It takes quite a lot of games to attract new demographics though. Having CoD doesn't help Nintendo a lot, and much of Rare's early 360 output suffered simply by being on the 360, so I'm not sure how safe looking at Yooka-Laylee's performance and attributing it to Banjo really works. I mean, the amount of times I see "It would just feel weird to play it on anything other than a Nintendo console" in every thread about it, kinda convinces me that many of its backers (and later buyers) would disappear if it ceased to be multiplat.

I think low to mid-tier budget games outside their normal stuff would be fine for aiming for new demographics but they will have to have something get bigger budgeting at some point as their big cash cow. Microsoft really needs to find a way to build more of an audience geared to more types of people. As do the other big two but in different areas. It takes time to build new audiences but it is something to strive for in the long term.

Can't believe the treasure vault of franchises MS is sitting in and someone had to make a kickstarter to make the game people want to play.
Love these guys.

Yep, that was very well done. I'm hoping Twisted Pixel gets another shot at Splosion Man as well..

I'm not either, but I do think it could be an avenue to explore if they were to deem a larger scale Banjo too expensive.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Fix the camera. Make it like SMG and set a rail for it, at least while you're jumping platforms.

They never left on Nintendo systems.

Hmm? Nintendo's never really been big on 3D platformers.

They do a flagship Mario per system and that's about it. What else have they done? DK64 is all that comes to mind for me.

Even Sony has both Ratchet and Tearaway on PS4 this year.

But yes, the thirst is very much real.

Not bad. The character designs are much better than most of the previous Rare output and it is also nice to see they are taking a grounded gameplay approach associated with the creatures.

even nuts & bolts knows nobody likes it

people have been thirsty forever

Haha I vaguely remember something like this being in the game back in the day and getting a laugh out of it. I like N&B though, it wasn't the game everybody wanted but it was a blast.

It is. Not too long after the gameplay reveal Microsoft and Rare caught on quick to the backlash.
And yet they didn't do anything about the game.

Which is why it'll never be a Banjo game to me.

The king is dead. Long live the newly Kickstarted king.

And even if Rare is finally making Banjo-Threeie now, they won't have Grant Kirkhope and David Wise. Playtonic is where it's at now.

It was way too late to go ahead and change the game. At that point all they could really do is damage control the situation. The game honestly should have been a new IP.

Curious. Who from the original BK Rare had anything to do with Nuts & Bolts? Who had already left by the time that game was being made?

While a fixed camera would be good for some sections, I don't think mirroring SMG's design would be what people want or expect out of this game. It's supposed to be an open collectathon type game in the vein of Banjo or Mario 64, which are very different platforming experiences than what SMG and 3D have done.

There was a decent amount of the BK team still there at the time. It was mostly the other teams that were bleeding talent. I messaged Grant on Facebook about the situation and he said at the end of the day Gregg Mayles and Tim Stamper made the decision to change Nuts & Bolts into what it was. Grant also told me the original plan was to just remake the original Banjo-Kazooie game but with co-op.

Funny, here we are with Yooka-Laylee and it has co-op planned :)

I love platformers! But I didn't like DKC or Bango-Kazooie. So I'm not all that excited for this specific title. I hope it encourages other studios to make some good platformers. Psychonauts 2 please.

Awesome, the thirst for 3D mascot platformers is real. I haven't donated, but I'll definitely pick it up for PS4 when it comes out.
