Yooka-Laylee becomes fastest video game project to hit $1 million on Kickstarter

In the world of the AAAA need to sell millions of copies to break even the numbers Ks like YL and MN9 do are laughable. What these show is that you can make a budget title that is marketed to the fans of a "niche" genre and make a profit ie the Atlus approach to business.

A game like Yooka-Laylee isn't niche. It's mid-tier. It can make a decent amount of money on a good, reasonable budget. The concept of AAAA is the very opposite of a "good, reasonable budget," and that's why AAAA development is broken.

I'm hoping this is a start of a 3D platformer renaissance. The thirst is real, and it made me ponder if Mightly No.9 would of been better off as a 3D game like Mega Man Legends. Either way this is convincing me to start a 3D project in Unity.

Err, it could have ended up more like Megaman X7.

although i didn't back this (i really dont have money to spare like this), i will support this by picking it up as soon as available.

can there be a tier to give yooka some articles of clothing? I know he can't wear shorts and a backpack as it'd be too obvious.

But what about a hawaiian shirt and sunglasses? Make him say "radical dude #yolo420swag"

I'd love a hawaiian shirt, with a tool belt.

Give Laylee some ruff on top of her head with some goggles.

Yeah. Although after giving it some thought, I like that they aren't overly "gendered", with the boy look a bit feminine and the girl not having generic female traits.

Oh Yooka is very gendered, it's just the Chameleon version of manly

You truly learn something new everyday. Still, I was referring to gender traits often attributed by humans to fictional characters.

Ex: lipstick, long eyelashes, pink, etc for female characters.

Why do you want to ruin their designs
Is there a reason some folks are concerned with the gender of a lizard and bat in a video game?
Why are you bothered by people caring about the characters' gender? It is important to them (and to me), end of story.

I saw some fan art the other day where Laylee had goggles on top of her head and it looked perfect. It's not a necessity but unlockable outfits would be great.

Thought their schedule was a bit optimistic, especially after they added the stretch goals and with additional platforms. Just adding people don't make that stuff happen.

It's nice when a game doesn't gravitate towards male defaults for its characters.
I'd personally prefer gender neutral protagonists, but the male-female duo of Banjo-Kazooie was pretty cool too.

I heard there's going to be a new stretch goal to get Poochy in the game.

Hope he doesn't die on the way back to his home planet.

I think there's a reason why Yooka has no clothes - there might be suggestions that because this is a Chameleon that you might to blend into the environment for some reasons. Avoid baddies, solve puzzles etc.

Damn those Wise/Kirkhope tracks may touch a bit too close to the material they're inspired from. On top of that they sound like they represent two different games. The Wise track definitely sounds right out of Tropical Freeze while Kirkhope's could be placed in a Banjo game and I'm pretty sure no one would notice the difference. Not to say I don't like the tracks. I think they're great. Just concerned the game won't have its own identity (though I'm sure it will after another year of development. I'm just throwing out topics for discussion.)

"Work in progress" :)

I'm sure the soundtrack will have a more unique vibe once they actually sit down and work on it

Impressive!

Good stuff and hope this leads to more 3D platformers--one of my favorite genres and sorely underrepresented today.

So why are you comparing sales numbers of these mostly downloadble indie games to retail AAAA where the budgets are much higher to break even? His point was, publishers can still see business in funding and publishing these smaller games. And quite a few publishers already do.

Square Enix: Life Is Strange
Ubisoft: Child of Light, Valiant Hearts, Grow Home
Sony: Axiom Verge, Velocity 2X, Journey, Unfinished Swan, Super Stardust HD, Tomorrow Children, Rime, Everybody Goes to the Rapture, etc

It's now similar to how movie studios have their own smaller branches. Fox Searchlight, Focus Features, etc.

That's exactly what I was thinking, but they are "works in progress."

Panther chameleons like in that pic are where males are more multi coloured, but in carpet chameleons females are more multi coloured. The panther males will have a pronounced rostral process (pointy nose). It's easier to figure out gender in panther ones than other species.

Carpet chameleons:

Left: male. Right: female.

Pregnant chameleons go for darker colours to shoo away the males.

Not just colour, there are various criteria where certain species can flip the gender expectation. For example on size, male panther chameleons are bigger but in dwarf chameleons, female are. One thing generalisable seems to be spurs (outgrowths on the back feet), that if present in certain species even at birth can tell it's a male and if there is no spur then a female.

To those of you pledging £340 (£350 when you include postage) for the N64 version, bear in mind that if you pledge £20 extra, you get a t-shirt, and £35 extra will get you the t-shirt, CD soundtrack, and a signed copy of the regular DVD case version of the game.

I'm happy for everyone involved :O

We need more diversity in this industry.

But the NightCry kickstarter was more suspenseful :p

In the Nintendolife video interview, Sutherland confirms Yooka will change color.

I thought they confirmed the chameleon was a dude and the bat was a lady. Am I wrong?

EDIT: they need to step up and come up with better stretch goals. The 1.1m and especially the 1.2m (a lets play walkthrough and developer commentary) are weak and lame IMO.

The level design in 3D World is probably one of the best I have seen for a 3d platformer.

Yes. Galaxy and 3D World aren't dumbed down at all, they just have a different focus. They're more about true platforming and obstacle courses than exploring and collecting. Just very different design philosophies.
