I still can't believe Disney was stupid enough to brag about potentially taking down the opening weekend record on Friday.

So dumb.

I called this in the prediction thread saying there'd be a drop from the first, but it seems even I was optimistic with my 200m prediction. IIRC someone in that thread predicted a 245m opening weekend lol.

Even ignoring the big fight, there just doesn't seem to be as much hype this time around.

Maybe now Marvel will STFU about Phase 4 until after the Phase ends.

am i incorrect.....i think alot of people are getting "marvel fatigue" judging by the mixed reception of avengers 2...

why are people so adamant about defending every MCU movie though?

The fact that it is only 1 movie and not a trend, that it did better than the original overseas, that the biggest pay per view of all time happened last night , that it has the second highest opening weekend of all time and so on kinda proves you're incorrect.

Wait till a bunch of superhero movies actually flop in a row before saying it's superhero fatigue

Whedon....

I don't think marvel fatigue is something that actually affects the general audience and is instead something that people on the internet like to discuss as a thing. The general audience also rated the film much higher than the critic reviews.

i dont know about that

RT for Avengers 1 was 92 percent

RT for Avengers 2 is at 75 percent

wait until mayweather vs Thanos

it will make 1 Billion an hour

$$$$$$, holy shit at that pic, the hype was insane for that fight, to bad it was shit

It's not about defending the movie. It doesn't need defending. It's more about the fact that you said it had nothing to do with the fight.

People paid $400M in PPV for the fight and those people are most likely the same exact demographic that would see avengers opening weekend. $400M!!!

Not to mention the number of people that went to sports bars, or people that went to friends houses. I saw a local group of friends that did a giant projector in there backyard for the fight. So many people there.

Second best opening of the franchise, even with the fight.

Yep, fatigue.

Can't wait to see the Star Wars threads, the "Star Wars is dead, RT score of 85%? its the prequels all over again! No Oscar nomination? Disney killed the franchise, at least Lucas knew shit about the franchise" comments will be glorious.

Those that complain about the Marvel "formula", what do you suggest they do differently? They are superhero/action movies, what else is there to do?

Where can you go from the top? How many more screens can you stuff a movie onto to boost the profits? Avengers 1 defines market saturation. They'll live, and Infinity War is definitely going to rally with what they learned this weekend. The Marvel people are smart like that.

When a good deal of people are already spending $99 on a Saturday night to watch a disappointing fight, I can see where the movie made less.

ok, i agree with you that the fight probably played a huge role then, but isn't anyone getting tired of marvel's formula, why don't they ever change things up, as someone said in an earlier post there are no literary value to these movies like some of the best runs have in comics

A single episode of Daredevil on netflix was better than the entirety of this movie. I hope Marvel goes back to the drawing board and works on having fewer characters, a more intimidating villain and lesser unfunny one liners. Winter Soldier is a great template to improve upon.

I wouldn't weigh in the audience scores until the film has been out longer.

It isn't far-fetched to say that some of the people who lined up for the movie within two days of its release may have rose-tinted glasses on.

Scrooged

Totally wronger about Nintendo's business decisions.
Made less than Avengers 1? I guess that's surprising, but there was the fight...

I'd be surprised if it ended up making less overall.

I went and saw Oddisee and then the Korean Music Festival in LA last night, so I couldn't see Avengers.

I'm sure that had an effect on ticket sales. obviously.

Is there Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Civil War Part 1 and 2? Like two/three different movies? Seems confusing.

And people thought this would make more money opening weekend then the new upcoming Star Wars. lol

It will. Star Wars opens in December, opening weekends in Winter are much lower than in Summer.
To put it into perspective, the biggest opening weekend of all time in December, is 84M for the first Hobbit movie, over 100M lower than AoU's.

And better than anything in the MCU except TWS.

Does anyone else think that the slightly lower opening is simply to do with increasing ticket prices?

I imagine that may have turned enough families of that it may not have been able to be made up by said price increase.

Anyway, fantastic! I enjoyed the film and it proves that this genre has plenty of vitality despite the naysayers!

So you want an Avengers(an ensemble/team of hereoes) movie without an ensemble/team of heroes?

As the weekend wore on, it became apparent that Saturday night's Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao fight was hurting Ultron in a big way. Some box office observers believe the movie could have approached $200 milion were it not for competition from the PPV event.

Costing $89.9-$99.9 to watch, the fight is expected to have generated hundreds of millions in revenue. Additionally, thousands watched the fight on pirate sites. "The fight dinged all films across the board. The numbers on Ultron are still phenomenal but definitely less than they would have been," said one rival studio executive.

Males made up 59 percent of Ultron's audience, while nearly 60 percent of ticket buyers were 25 and over. Families represented 22 percent and teens, 12 percent.

Yeah, I see what you're saying, but to be honest...what do you want a comic book movie to do differently? Character is boss, meets enemy that is stronger, digs deep, shit blows up, hero saves the day.

Russo brothers gave it a gritty spin, which is what we'll see with the next avengers installment.
