1. Casablanca
2. Once Upon a Time in America
3. In the Mood for Love
4. Blade Runner (Director's Cut)
5. Apocalypse Now
6. Spirited Away
7. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
8. Rear Window
9. Lost in Translation
10. The Empire Strikes Back

I'll probably bang my head later for forgetting a title that could rank higher than some on this list, but as these are the first that popped in my head, they deserve their place. Stuff like 12 Angry Men, Jaws, Seven Samurai, Heat, Paths of Glory, 2001, Toy Story 3, Up, The Thin Red Line, ... spring to mind

This is extremely difficult.

1. Contact
2. Alien
3. Raiders of the Lost Ark
4. The Seventh Seal
5. Mulholland Drive
6. Pinocchio
7. Ratatouille
8. Citizen Kane
9. Dark City
10. Serenity

edit: switched my top 3 a bit. I love them all so much, but maybe Contact is my favourite movie right now.

Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge, we make promise only; pain we obey.
  1. Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)
  2. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
  3. No Country for Old Men (2007)
  4. Pulp Fiction (1994)
  5. Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
  6. Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
  7. Låt den rätta komma in (2008)
  8. Rear Window (1954)
  9. Watchmen (2009)
  10. Fanny och Alexander (1982)

I want to make a list but I'm just so paralyzed with choice. There are so many amazing movies, I'm having an impossible time whittling it down :(

1) The Human Condition
There Will Be Blood
2001: A Space Odyssey
Ran
Boyhood
12 Years a Slave
Make Way for Tomorrow
The Testament of Dr. Mabuse
La Strada
10) Late Spring

This was difficult. I wanted to limit my list to one film per director. I knew I wanted either M or Dr. Mabuse and ultimately went with Dr. Mabuse because I find the parallels with what was happening in Germany at the time to be really interesting, although I think M has one of the strongest third acts in cinema.

It was really tempting to include Kobayashi's Harakiri, which I think is a tighter and more focused film than The Human Condition, but overall safer and less ambitious.

Forgotten in his cell
1. Groundhog Day (1993)
2. Wall-E (2008)
3. Airplane! (1980)
4. Do the Right Thing (1989)
5. Star Wars (1977)
6. Casablanca (1942)
7. City Lights (1931)
8. The Grand Illusion (1937)
9. The Godfather (1972)
10. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

Getting a list is pretty easy with Flickchart.

1 - The Shawshank Redemption
2 - Requiem for a Dream
3 - Blade Runner
4 - Kill Bill: Vol. 1
5 - The Fifth Element

Not as good as top 5, but still worth mentioning:

6 - Terminator 2: Judgment Day
7 - The Dark Knight
8 - The Matrix
9 - Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
10 - The Sixth Sense

Fifth Element is a special entry, it's my most watched movie of all time. I have watched it literally 100+ times.

My list:

  1. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
  2. Children of Men
  3. Raiders of the Lost Ark
  4. 12 Angry Men
  5. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
  6. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
  7. Blade Runner
  8. Pulp Fiction
  9. Die Hard
  10. The Lion King

I found it impossible to make a top 10 and then rank them. Some were easier than others. My top 5 is probably perfect but the others could have been swapped in and out for plenty of movies.

Honourable mentions:

The Matrix
Schinder's List
Terminator 2
The Big Lebowski
The Princess Bride
The Truman Show

And more recently:

Big Hero 6
Bird Man
Lego Movie
Boyhood
Guardians of the Galaxy

These threads always make me want to watch more movies, there are so many directors I should watch more of. This list is somewhat from winging it based on how much they've stuck with me. I think Robocop is just as fun a watch as Brazil but the latter made a much stronger impression on me even with a single viewing.

1. Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) A tense and terrifying gate into the hell of man.
2. Ikiru (1952)
3. Rear Window (1954) This and 12 Angry Men are great in how simple they are, doing so much with so little.
4. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) Together with Ran made me appreciate cinematography.
5. Millennium Actress (2001)
6. Fanny and Alexander (1982)
7. Rififi (1955) Has the best pulled off heist I've seen, which also doubles as one of the most suspenseful scenes ever.
8. Brazil (1985) Bitingly bizarry, funny and frighteninig. One of my favorite things are de Niro's character, and what role he really plays (
none whatsoever, he's just someone in that world who actually tries doing his job
).
9. 12 Angry Men (1957)
10. Love Exposure (2008)

1 Star Wars

Empire is arguably the better film, but it needs Star Wars and Jedi to tell a complete story. Star Wars is perfectly self contained, so it is my choice.

2 Raiders of the Lost Ark

3 Jaws

4 Casablanca

5 Lawrence of Arabia

6 Charade

7 North by Northwest

8 2001: A Space Odyssey

But with the caveat it has to be seen on a huge screen. I saw it on Video and DVD several times and was luke-warm to it. But when I saw it screened at the BFI (using a 70mm print supervised and approved by Stanley Kubrick) it was one of the best cinematic experiences of my life.

9 The Incredibles

10 Once Upon a Time in the West

  1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
  2. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
  3. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
  4. The Shawshank Redemption
  5. The Matrix
  6. Pulp Fiction
  7. No Country for Old Men
  8. Django Unchained
  9. Inglorious Basterds
  10. The Iron Giant
(yes I love Quentin Tarantino's movies)

This is so freaking hard...but here goes.

1. The Seventh Seal (Bergman)

2. Barry Lyndon (Kubrick)

3. Stalker (Tarkovsky)

4. The Godfather Part I (Coppola)

5. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Dominik)

6. In the Mood for Love (Wong Kar-wai)

7. Lawrence of Arabia (Lean)

8. Mulholland Drive (Lynch)

9. The Tree of Life (Malick)

10. Caché (Haneke)

1 The Court Jester [1955]
2 Casablanca [1942]
3 12 Angry Men [1957]
4 The 39 Steps [1935]
5 Fargo [1996]
6 Rear Window [1954]
7 Master and Commander: Far Side of the Earth [2003]
8 Ace In The Hole [1951]

Man the amount of lists in this thread that don't list any movies pre-1990 or just big blockbusters is shockingly high. To those of you, I BEG you go watch some more films. It will change your life for the better.

I'm not sure if I'd definitively call these the 'best' movies I've ever seen, but off the top of my head, the top movies that I can rewatch multiple times and not get bored with them (Which I guess amounts to the same thing) would go something like:

1. Seven Samurai
2. Predator
3. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
4. The Thing
5. Armor of God
6. Raiders of the Lost Ark
7. Battle Royale
8. Police Story
9. The Ring (Original, not the shitty US remake)
10. Star Trek 2

4. The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
5. Gravity
6. The Departed
7. Lawrence of Arabia
8. Ronin
9. Into the Wild
10. Inception

Completely insane to try and create this list. A week from now I would replace half of those movies with one of the other 50 or so I had on my list of nominees. Top 4 would probably remain regardless, though positions would change. And now to watch all the movies from your top 10 lists I haven't seen yet...

Alright, I've got a list of about fifty sitting around here for situations just like this - I'll pick ten out of it and see if I can get a nice mix of genres and directors in there:

  1. Lawrence of Arabia
  2. Jaws
  3. The Godfather
  4. The Matrix
  5. Spirited Away
  6. Empire Strikes Back
  7. The Evil Dead (1981)
  8. Monty Python's The Meaning of Life
  9. Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
  10. The Thing (1982)

Order is almost completely random.

Honorable mentions: Blade Runner, The Big Lebowski, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Shaun of the Dead, Aliens

3. Shindler's List
4. Apocalypse Now
5. American Beauty
6. The Empire Strikes Back
7. Inception
8. Dr. Strangelove
9. The Godfather
10. Taxi Driver

List changes every month, I gotta watch more movies.

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick) - Something that needs to be seen to be understood. It defies logic. It's been a year and I still think about this film which never happens.

2. The Dark Knight (Nolan )- The action is incredibly intense, that introduction, that tunnel action sequence, the Joker.

3. Seven Samurai (Kurosawa)- An action adventure drama is just to this day still amazing. I particularly love the way it manages to be subtle in so many ways.

4. The Social Network (Fincher)- An truly tense drama that works so incredibly with Sorkin's dialogue and Fincher's clinical and sharp direction.

5. Tokyo Story (Ozu) - Not a moment of this drama is not perfect in its execution.

The rest I'll just mention because I really don't have an exact order for them but I pretty much equally love all these films and ... I'm bored.

L'Atalante (Vigo) Rashomon (Kurosawa), Mulholland Drive (Lynch), Her (Jonze), Spirited Away (Miyazaki), Terminator 2 (Cameron), Titanic (Cameron) 8 and 1/2 (Fellini), Lolita (Kubrick), Barry Lyndon (Kubrick), Letters From Iwo Jima (Eastwood), Gone Girl (Fincher) The Breakfast Club (Hughes), LOTR trilogy (Jackson), 12 Angry Men (Lumet), Back to The Future 1 (Zemeckis), Adaptation (Jonze) Inglorious Basterd (Tarantino) Zodiac (Fincher) Se7en (Fincher) Fight Club (Fincher) Watchmen (Snyder) Dr Strangelove (Kubrick) Psycho (Hitchcock) Vertigo (Hitchcock) The Lion King (Allers/Minkoff), Beauty and the Beast (Trousdale/Wise) Aladdin (Clements/Musker) Anastasia (Bluth/Goldman) Synecdoche, New York (Kaufman) Donnie Darko (Kelly) Mean Girls (Waters) Nightcrawler (Gilroy) Whiplash (Chazelle) The Matrix (The Wachowski's) Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory the old one (Stuart) 10 Things I Hate About You (Junger) The Avengers (Whedon) Blade Runner (Scott) Saving Private Ryan (Spielberg) The Graduate (Nichols) Memento (Nolan) Inception (Nolan) Taxi Driver (Scorsese) The Wrestler (Aronofsky)

Welp that's about a million recommendations and I could probably gone on for a while longer ... I have no life. Anyway I'd say if you agree with 8 out of 10 of the movies that you have seen, the rest of my list might be pretty good and worth checking out :)

With this in mind, is it a smart thing you are already keeping track in a sheet? You could end up having to go back and check everything again.

It's better to stay up to date on everything IMO. I'll know if people made edits to their posts based on the 'edited by _' at the bottom of their posts. I figure it'll be easier to make changes to 10-15% of the results I've already added, than to do hundreds of them at once :p
