1)The Human Condition
There Will Be Blood
2001: A Space Odyssey
Ran
Boyhood
12 Years a Slave
Make Way for Tomorrow
The Testament of Dr. Mabuse
10)La Strada

This was difficult. I wanted to limit my list to one film per director. I knew I wanted either M or Dr. Mabuse and ultimately went with Dr. Mabuse because I find the parallels with what was happening in Germany at the time to be really interesting, although I think M has one of the strongest third acts in cinema.

It was really tempting to include Kobayashi's Harakiri, which I think is a tighter and more focused film than The Human Condition, but overall safer and less ambitious.

Which film in The Human Condition trilogy?

1.Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003)
2.Schindler's List (1993)
3.Scarface (1983)
4.The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
5.The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
6.North by Northwest (1959)
7.Into the Wild (2007)
8.The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)
9.The Naked City (1948)
10.Salinui chueok (2003)

10. The French Connection

Really bloody hard to narrow it down to 10 movies. I've left out so many...

My list is a blasphemy because it lacks Kubrick/Kurosawa , probably 2 of my 3 favorite directors. But i had to put that film in the 10th spot. This is not the best film's of all time. This is my favorite movies. I think i could construct a very different list with a mindset of evaluating more rationally the films.

I also tried to put a bunch of movies that a) left me immediately with a huge impression ; b) that i have watched more than 5-10 times (being the 9th position the exception. But it's so exceptionally humane that i had to fit it). This probably ends up hurting more recent movies (i think a movie like Interstellar will easily enter this top in 4-5 years). With that in mind , trying to create a somewhat diverse list:

1 - The Sword of Doom (1966) - Kihachi Okamoto

2 - The Thin Red Line (1998) - Terrence Malick

Scratch that, world's first instance of Citizen Kane and Dragonball Evolution appearing on the same film list.

I was going to grab covers for all of the movies in this thread but then a few users came in with their list full of really obscure titles that I have never even heard of so I doubt I could find good assets for them. Would have been cool to see a huge wall of cover art for all of them.

So. Tough. I found naturally also a 'director' top ten of sorts but obviously with some horrendous omissions! Really looking forward to the results. I'm new and won't bore with rationale or lack thereof, needless to say there are some romantic flights of fancy here:

2. The Godfather (Coppola, 1972)
3. Walkabout (Roeg, 1971)
4. Vertigo (Hitchcock, 1958)

Why isn't my vote included in the list OP?

Because...

2) The point scale will be from 1 to 10, meaning that your number one film will receive 10 points, your second favorite film will receive 9 points - and so forth. In the event that you cannot come up with 10 films, please provide at least 3 films. They will be scored similarly, the only difference being the floor of your scale being higher (A list of three films will be scored from 10-8, a list of 5 films will be scored from 10-6, etc.)

is what I came up with in a quick 25 minutes. I'd change a lot if I really tooled with it-- a Scorsese would find its way in, maybe a Miyazaki, might shuffle the Cronenbergs and Carpenters, add in a Sono, cram more Kieslowski in there, something Czech, missing Lang and Chaplin and Shepitko. so much more, and so much more to watch. I can live with this though.

1: 2001: A Space Odyssey - One of my favorite films and always one of the first I bought on DVD. I did get a chance a few years ago to see it in a theater (alas only the 35mm print) and it was amazing.
2: Raiders of the Lost Ark - In my opinion the perfect action movie. The perfect execution of George Lucas' idea of recreating the genres of his youth with modern film making methods perfectly executed by Steven Spielberg at the zenith of his career and possibly the last time Harrison Ford cared on film.
3: Seven Samurai - Just a favorite of mine. Perfect on every level.
4: Zodiac - Criminally unappreciated during an awesome movie year. I eventually caught it at home and was entranced by it the whole time. I really appreciated the feelings of dread it builds and the lack of an easy answer when the credits roll .
5: The Incredibles - My favorite overall Pixar film and probably the best super hero movie made. Although in recent years it's overall message has started bugging me.
6: The Fantastic Mr. Fox - Wes Anderson's and stop motion were made for each other.
7: Jackie Brown - Tarintino's best effort to date. Adapting existing material rather then creating his own world toned down his eccentricities that fill his films since Kill Bill.
8: Fargo - Just the perfect blend of comedy and drama in a place that isn't normally on film. Plus the perfect actress at the center of the film.
9: The Third Man - Feeds into my love of zither music.
10: Chinatown - Everything right with film noir.

The leftovers:

Apocalypse Now
Blade Runner
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Finding Nemo
Ghostbusters
Heat
The Lego Movie
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Kill Bill Vol. 2
The Prestige
Pulp Fiction
The Road Warrior
Se7en
Sorcerer
Spirited Away
There Will Be Blood

Good first choice!

I like your list! I'd probably go with Taxi Driver over Raging Bull and Blue Velvet over Wild at Heart but I like your style :)

I really like this list, has a bunch of different genres and seems to have a mix of personal favorites and those which wouldn't be out of a place on a sight and sound list.

Thanks very much.

It's agony picking them and could easily sub in and out picks for Kubrick, Scorsese, Lynch et al, simply the way she blows.

Regarding genres, I like to look at these lists as like desert island discs with film as opposed to music and try to mix it up accordingly.

Took me a while to come to this list and despite neglecting so many other classics out there, these are easily my most memorable.
