"Gears of War remaster coming to Xbox One, sources say" (by Splash Damage)

On the recent Rebel FM, Arthur (from Polygon who "broke" this) seemed to have had actual screens on hand. According to him, we're getting updated models, updated textures, physical based render lighting, and the engine is probably a modified UE3. Didn't know anything about resolution or frame rate though. EDIT: Actually they mention multiplayer is 60fps.

EDIT: I've been made aware that besides the resolution and framerate, none of this can be confirmed from the beta (or whatever it was). Still I'd be surprised if we don't see some other graphical improvements.

I still think that this is really a waste of money and time. If this is going to be released Fall 2015. Good luck.

I dont see people rushing out getting an Xbone for another 10 years old game. A lot probably learned after that MCC fuck up. And if this is only the first one? lol...

I'm in the camp that wants it to play 100% like Gears 1 but I hope the only thing they alter is the movement in Gears 1.
Gears 3 movement was so much more fluid and advanced that playing Gears 1 feels like your character is stuck in mud.

Keep rest of the game entirely in tact but please alter the movement so that it's as good as Gears 3.

I'm doubting UE4 and true remake.

I can see them pushing a standard remaster this time, slight bump to the textures, but nothing like the Halo Anniversary games in terms of remake.

1080/60 with that in mind shouldn't be too difficult.

The only reason I think its possible is its just one game and it was on a engine that seems like it would scale more easily than others.

Eh, it's another game for the holiday. Halo and Tomb Raider are the big ones they'll be pushing. This is a little something extra that might push some people (ie Gears fans) over the edge before the real new Gears comes next year.

Can I get some love for the alternate control scheme in Gears 2 & 3?

I played some Execution in Gears 1 just now and it's impossible to move the way I like without the alternate scheme. For those who never tried it: X becomes the roll/run button while A is dedicated solely to taking cover. It makes wall bouncing possible and prevents all the accidental rolls you get from a tense match. I'm in on a remake of the first Gears but they have to add that alt control scheme.

I'm hoping this isn't a $60 game. MCC as broken as it was/is, had immense value as a package with all the content (games). MS needs to price this game accordingly.

Yeah, this being a $60 title would look very silly next to MCC if it's just the first Gears and not the whole series.

I think if they can manage to capture some of the gears 1 experience with a thorough remake, it would be worth 60. Gears 1 experience means "wow look what my console can do". If they can make sure it's a real showcase, then they have a 60 dollar game on their hands.

Whats a good price in your opinion? I don't mind dropping $60 for this but not everyone thinks that.

$30-40 if it's a true remake akin to Halo 2 in the MCC. The logic behind that price point is that the devs aren't designing and building a game from the ground up; story, art direction, gameplay mechanics, multi player, balance, characters, etc.

I been itching for some more Gears lately. So hearing this news is good. I have fond memories of Gears 1 multiplayer.

Halo CEA was £30 over here when it launched iirc, how much as it in the US? $40 or $50? I think if this is only Gears 1 then it will be priced the same, that said I doubt MS will only do just 1 game, at worst they will sell it with 1 out of the box then the rest as downloads over a few months (free for people who bought it though, imagine it like a seasons pass but not sold separately)

Even then, I find it kind of hard to believe they will have had all that time since buying the franchise and only put one game in it even if theres a lot of work done.

I dont need a UE4 60fps game that looks like a early PS3 game or so...

Sry but its not really happening. Like i said, that Engine already struggles with 30fps and whatever resolution on XboxOne.
Lol that's why it's called a remaster. I'm expecting a Halo: CEA kind of upgrade. What UE 4 game struggles on XboxOne?

I doubt Microsoft would be going balls deep in an engine that didn't work sufficiently/was significantly struggling on their platform or be going for 60fps (which is what the leak was, 60fps)

Gears of War, Scalebound, Crackdown, Fable Legends/Lionhead, possibly/probably Rare too and anything else we don't know about, that would literally be the worst decision ever

I have a hunch it's just the one game, Gears 1. This remaster sounds like it might be a bit of a rush job to build hype / excitement / stir up discussion for the a new Gears game next year.

If it was a rush job, I doubt it would be in at home testing in April (assuming holiday launch, that is). Halo MCC didn't have any sort at home beta to the public like that as far as I can tell they only started doing it for the March 2015 beta update and we can see how that worked out.

Splash Damage have had those job listings about a big AAA franchise and unannounced project since last holiday iirc.

I'm not suggesting it won't be a good game, but lets be honest here, there's already a PC version of Gears 1. That's probably the source code they're using to build the remaster for the One, which in many ways is just a pc.

Yup they wont port that game over again from the 360... Its already ported to x86...

An UE4 game at 60fps on Xbone is gonna look like an early PS3 title? maybe you're overreacting a bit? for all we know it might be 60fps only on MP with SP being 30fps as always.

Also what UE4 games are struggling with 30fps and/or resolution on the Xbone? the only somewhat graphically demanding title that comes to mind is Outlast and it runs pretty good plus was also 1080p IIRC.

No im not?

Cant name the other UE4 game. But it has more going on than some dark corridor indie game like Outlast ;)

So many Unreal Engine specialists over here who exactly know what the game is and how it's getting ported, plus the result on the XB1.

Aren't you happy we have so many qualified arm-chair specialists though? I am, it definitely makes unannounced games without discernible performance analyzes all the more unappetizing to me!

I don't think you remember what early PS3 games look like and what can be achieved on the Xbox One right now.

900p?

I think you expect too much from the XboxOne Hardware... Yeah maybe early PS3 was a bit too far. But a 60fps UE4 game wont be a looker, thats for sure.

Lets wait and see^^

If it is just a remaster with 1080p60 visuals (without the Halo Anniversary-type treatment) then I can see this only being about $20. Which would put it in line with the Resident Evil Remaster, because to be honest REmaster probably would have more work put into it then just a straight upressed port of Gears of War.

Are you talking about Pneuma? because by your definition it's some (bright) corridor indie game too. ;)

Anyway I guess we'll have to wait and see "how early PS3-like" a 60fps UE4 Gears will look at E3.

People on the fence would consider getting the console. Its not 1 thing, but then you have all these game together this holiday season with amazing pricing. It all adds up.

You'd be okay with $60? $50?? $40??? $30????

Big, fat 'no' all of the above. Not for a remake of what was already a great looking HD title.

$20 is the right (fair) price.

Maybe not early ps3 games. I already said that this comment was a bit exaggerated. But you know what i mean.

They wont show a UE4 Gears this year. Maybe a CGI Gears 4 teaser, that's all im expecting.
And it probably wont be 60fps.

That "Remaster" is a sure thing. Phil already teased it and the leaks yeah.

I'd pay $60 but I'm also a huge Gears fan so I'm gonna buy anything Gears related day one.

UE4, 60fps, improved textures, lighting, models, and movement from Gears 3 and I'd be pretty damn satisfied.

How much Last of us cost on PS4? and this is serious question.

Exactly, these games aren't exactly huge system sellers on its own, they're just the cherry on top to push people over the edge. The same goes for games like Sunset Overdrive etc, while the game itself might not have been a huge system seller itself, it's still another bullet point on the reason to own the xbox one list for the people considering it.

Really depends on what they do with it. If it's just a straight 1080p/60fps port, then $20-$25 sounds about right. But if there's more to it, I'd be willing to pay more up to about $40 depending on what exactly they add/improve. Any higher than that though, and I'll wait for a sale.

Last of Us is a weird comparison, though. I'd bet a large percentage of folks who purchased on PS4 didn't get it on PS3 since it came out towards the end of that console's life cycle.

This game is going to cater mostly to people who already purchased and played Gears on 360. Making it a full-price or close-to-full-price title is absolutely not the way to go. Not without some pretty significant additions to the standard package that go beyond graphical upgrades.

Just caught your reply, and I think you're spot on.

I think it was priced at $49.99 and then they dropped to $39.99 just prior to launch.

No it was 59.99 up till June where they made an announcement to drop the price by 10$ making it 49.99 at release.

As it stand the game still sells for about that, give or take specific retailer.

If this is just Gears 1 remastered, it better be no more than 29.99 with all the DLC. Same goes fro God of War 3 right now, 39.99 is too much for a 8hr game, with no New game plus, or added DLC.
