Million selling PS1 and PS2 games in the USA - More than 190 titles

Revive as in the current believe is that the late GT6 release didnt sell that good. I do think 3+ mil is likely, even if THAT site also says so.

And even if 3+ mil is technically good, its bad for the series old standard.

I think GT6's performance really just comes down to everyone (including myself) underestimating just how fast people would switch to current gen systems. It came out right after the PS4 launched and the hype for it was at a fever pitch and GT just got caught up in the madness. It was just very bad timing for its release.

Worldwide sales

Gran Turismo - 10.85m
Gran Turismo 2 - 9.37m
Gran Turismo 3 - 14.89m
Gran Turismo 4 - 11.73m
Gran Turismo 5P- 5.35m
Gran Turismo 5 - 10.66m

Lets just say Gran Turismo 6 hasn't done as well as any of the above titles yet according to what evidence we have. Also, don't use "that" site.

Honestly, the only problem is GT6. It might also be over reaction. GT6 is going to be decline from those games, but perhaps GT7 willl return back to glory. And even then "only" 3+ mil sounds kinda eh excuse. Im not even dissing GT franchise as a whole, it is the best selling Sony IP period. Who would downplay that? lol

The problem is, GT6 is decline compared to other games. But its obviously going to sell more on PS4 so... There really is no problem actually.

..Hmm I wonder how much we have official info on GT6 sales. GT6 did have 200k + on NPD at launch, 300-400k on Japan. And wasnt there a thread where it showed GT6 in European sales as well? So atleast million I believe.

To be honest I didn't really say much with that post haha, just stated the facts.

GT is one of the best selling franchises out there. It'll be interesting to see how it does on PS4.

GT6 sales were terrible because it was an un needed sequel that came out at the end of a generation.

It's interesting how what were considered monster hits in those gens seem almost quaint in sales comparisons to games of today.

I'm off to bed so probably tomorrow.

Any games in particular you want to know about?

I guess Halo, Halo 2 & Ninja Gaiden, but I'm just curious how it looked compared to GC. I'm no rush though.

Also, the original Paper Mario didn't break 1M on N64, but Thousand Year Door did? Interesting.

Not unneeded imho.

Jak series vs Ratchet series sales (three games each):
Jak series: 4.81 Million
Ratchet series: 3.86 Million

Someone explain to me why Sony continued with the Ratchet series on the PS3 and not the Jak series?

Because ND didn't want to make more Jak and they did Uncharted that is bigger than both of them

- These are USA only sales, its possible WW is higher for R&C
- Fans were more divided ever since Jak 2. R&C was practically all good until A41 and that was much later
- Jak out right died in Japan. They didnt even get Jak 3.
- Naughty Dog wanted to do something else, Insomniac was fine with Ratchet.
- R&C has better market appeal, which is why it got movie deal. Same with Sly.
- Ratchet & Clank is better series cough cough

As of 2008, NPD adjusted a lot of numbers and include all releases including bundles etc....

January 2009 NPD leak has different numbers for PS2 games. For example GTA San Andreas at 8.16m (Incl. Special Edition) and GTA Vice City at 7.06m

You're sure this data is correct? It's not usual for NPD add bundles in software sales.

Two things I noticed:

Castlevania Symphony of the Night, a game widely regarded as one of the best on PS1, didn't make the list.

The superior football game of 2005, NFL 2K5, sold half of what Madden 2005 did, even though it was priced at $20 compared to $50.

So according to this Soul Calibur 2 on GC did slightly outsell SC2 on PS2 after all (1M vs. 0.97M).

and

Sonic Mega Collection PS2 (1.44) > Sonic Mega Collection GC (1.38)

The Saturn itself sold under 2 million US iirc. Sales wise it seems pretty close to Vita here.

With all this gen 5/6 data though it be nice to see the Xbox million sellers if any kind soul has them handy. Ditto for GBC and GBA.

ArtHands

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Man, those days.

And now vita is still struggling to produce its first million selling game

Yeh something like that.
Vita > 2M > Saturn (1.96M iirc?)

Worldwide? I'm not even sure it has a game that's sold 500K in the US.

So that's why the numbers don't match up to previous figures. Weird that they're including bundled software in old data now but not in new data. Thanks!

Please note that Star Wars Battlefront 2 should be titled Star Wars Rogue Battle 2. This is a typo on my end.

Roge Battle 2 ?! (~_^)

Paper Mario released on Nintendo 64 in 2001, just before gamecube and after the PS2. It sold over 500,000 units as of 2004.

zev98IU.jpg

PLEASE IGNORE COD2, that is 360.
SOME TITLES LIKE ELDER SCROLLS IS MISSING

Ninja Gaiden had sold over 800k as of end of 2006. Don't have further data. (Just to clarify, Ninja Gaiden + Black sales counted).

Roge Battle 2 ?! (~_^)

I can't spell lol. I meant Squadron.

Also GC top 16 titles vs. Xbox top 16
GC 29.75M, Xbox 30.85M

Pretty close :). I didn't realize how skewed the original Xbox was towards Halo though.

Out of the top 10 games, 4 are shooters, 3 are sports titles, 2 are WRPGs, and 1 is a racing game.

I feel like this is a very good reflection of the modern day industry as a whole, maybe a bit more emphasis on shooters.

Where are you finding the charts at?

Splinter Cell isn't really a shooter to be honest. It's as much a shooter as Hitman (before absolution)

on second thought, nevermind.

What do you mean?

You said you couldn't find a source that said Halo 2 had sold more than 6m.

I linked you a source.

I didn't say that at all. I wanted all the numbers, I said the only numbers I can find are on this site and those were as of 2004 (which was before halo 2 sold 6 million.

Here is the link: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1602135

I'm just interested in where you got the current numbers.

Wouldn't Daytona USA, NiGHTS into Dreams..., and Virtua Cop also sell a similar amount? I remember (and still owning it somewhere) a bundle that included all the four games. Even as I kid I thought that was too good to be true and assumed all of them were demos.

If I remember correctly, the Saturn was bundled with Daytona USA, Virtua Cop 1 and Virtua Fighter 2 at some point. Which is the bundle that I had when I was a kid/ teen. To me, Virtua Fighter 2 alone justified owning a Saturn. I think there also might have been a similar bundle that included Christmas Nights as well.

The Saturn interestingly never had demo discs outside of Christmas Nights, which is something that Sony pushed a lot for the Playstation in magazines. The only Sega console to have demo discs was the Dreamcast. Which is something that they included monthly with the Official Dreamcast Magazine.

Another Sega console that had a massive bundle was the Sega CD, which had Sonic CD, Ecco the Dolphin, Sega 5-in-1 Genesis classics and Sewer Shark all bundled with the add-on. I had that as well.

Probably already said, but what's interesting about this is that these days for AAA, anything under like 4/5 million is a failure.

How can publishers expect sales in the upper multi millions for every big game when the audience (non-mobile, which isn't that much larger now than the PS2 days) typically bought around 1-2 million copies for the best selling games. It's just madness.

Wha????

Last Gen was the biggest in history, much bigger than ps2 Gen. That's showing now as well with watch dogs new up doing 8 mill.

As a whole, you are probably right. But I don't think there was an individual console that reached the PS2's worldwide numbers... other than the Nintendo DS. The Wii did come close though.

But then again, the Playstation 2 completely dominated generation 6, with the GCN and OG Xbox selling under 30 million units each worldwide. Last gen, the playing field was much more even across the board.

Last Gen wasn't even at all, only reason why current numbers seem that way was because Wii had no support for like 4 years.

The Wii sold more than 360/ps3 combined at times if I remember right.
