Digital Foundry - Witcher 3 performance analysis XO/PS4

I think the game is almost perfect in PS4. I always move the camera around just to test and it feels very smooth!

And look at this scene, I almost feel the game will literaly jump off screen, it looks incredible. Thank you, CDPR, escpecially for the "Letter for the gamer" you put on the disc. Thank you.

maybe some one could capture footage of the swamp area that apparently tanks the ps4's frame rate. some one else could do the same for the xbox version and see if its the same.

I know no one would probably care but I should mention that this game also sends my PS4's fans into an almost constant high-RPM spin IE: it makes you PS4 loud as fuck almost constantly because the engine is clearly putting in some damn work.

Even my wife commented on how loud the system was last night and that was with the volume turned up

Almost tempted to just pick up the XB1 version due to it always being the quieter system.... almost :p

how noisy is the fan compared to when bloodborne? about the same?

The game is running beautifully on PS4 at 1080p/30fps . there are minor bugs needed to be ironed out but currently the game is ace on PS4.

Glad I go PC on this one and I probably will for all massive single player experience too, so much for the Console = PC version I have read everywhere.

Huh? People said that?

Of course monster rig PC's will forever outperform consoles beyond this gen until the end of time. Sounds like you were always going to go PC regardless.

CDPR did the best they could it looks like to me. Performance will improve with time.

I say that with no interest in picking up this game.

That texture and geometry pop in some seconds later, is this normal and throughout the whole game so clearly visible?

Well there are other people here saying it drops to 20's in combat, rain etc. So maybe your just not as sensitive to frame drops as some people.

I'm more inclined to believe that the frame drops happen but some people don't notice them than someone telling me its solid 30 while others saying its not.

I urge everyone to look at the framerates video posted by DF.

PS4 rarely drop a single frame during gameplay and 99% locked 30 fps.
some cutscenes seem to suffer a certain bug that drop frames to mid teens at the beginning.

Performance is really impressive on PS4,its also good on X1 if not for the stuttering, variable framerates and 900p.

People saying that will avoid PS4 version is a pity, the game runs very well.

is it just me or the difference in IQ between consoles in this particular game is much more profound compared to other games?

We have seen some 900p vs 1080p IQ comparisons that honestly dont feel that much different, but here (at least judging from the screen caps in DF article) the difference in IQ seems substantial. Not only in objects/clarity in the distance, but also in items close to the player. Lots of blur.

I haven't noticed any myself backed by DF video analysis. maybe I'm not that far in the game but so far it is running really good.

900p on ps4 is marketing suicide. Itvwould have been ripped apart. I think we will see bad framerate become the norm the more they push. Unless someone has the balls to do the drop

Assassin's Creed Unity, Watchdogs, Battlefield 4, Battlefield Hardline, EA Sports UFC?

It was my worst event in Hyper Sports, I'm not surprised they avoid it.
What's your point? Triple buffering on consoles is pretty much de facto these days and it's also kind of needed considering that games hover around 30 and anything taxing would plunge it to 20 and make it really jarring...the benefit it brings about (i.e. not dipping to 20s) has a far greater impact than an extra frame of latency especially on consoles where you have an indirect control.

On PC I used to not run V sync at all for MP games and I will continue to do so until I get a free sync/G sync monitor.

Playing it on the Alpha, which is similar to PS4 spec wise and I found I didn't care much for some of the post processing effects, so I have textures and detail on Ultra and turned stuff like chromatic aberration and bloom off.

Getting 30-33 fps on average at 1080p and I'm quite happy with this.

They should really give console owners the ability to tweak the graphics settings as you can actually get a much better experience with the same hardware.

There is literally no advantage for anyone by keeping these options hidden.

Not ambitious, but some people have expectations set way too high.

So PS4 owners are happy with a flaky frame-rate as long as the resolution is always 1080p?

That makes absolutely no sense to me other than 'hey, at leasts it's sharper'.

I'd much rather any given title run at a proper resolution than worry about framerate.

I've always felt that way, whether on consoles or PC. Hell, when I had shitty hardware around Skyrim's launch, I still insisted on running it in 1080p at high settings, even though it meant I was often playing at 15-20 fps. Fidelity of the image is much more important than framerate to me.

Just watched the frame rate comparison and some people are definitely exaggerating. Aside from cutscenes which for some reason runs horribly, the PS4 version seems quite smooth in gameplay. Combat and traversal are around 28-30FPS most of the time. That's surely far from bad. While others may be sensitive to it, I definitely wouldn't notice it. Looking at some of the posts, fighting multiple enemies in the swamps and rain may tank the frame rate to 20's? I'm not gonna comment on that since we don't have evidence as of now.

I don't remember too many comments in the reviews about performance issues, maybe I wasn't paying attention...
Iirc from what I read on GAF, the PS4 versions were sent out as review copies.

What I do remember from reviews were statements like these:

"In the end, it’s quite simply one of the best RPGs ever made."
-Daniel Bloodworth Gametrailers.com Review
edit: rereading, he did mention choppy framerates, but then said, "...the annoyances caused by these rough spots feel minimal compared to the sense of wonder that permeates throughout."

"...this is the best role-playing game in years."
-Oli Welsh, Eurogamer.net Review

I understand that the framerate will still bother some people (I bought the Xbox One version for the physical extras, but I'm opting to play it on PC), but I think holding off to buy a PS4 version of the game might be a little...unwarranted?

Again, if this is the thing that bothers you most, I understand. I just think maybe the game could be enjoyable in spite of...

Can't say as I've yet to really play Bloodborne extensively, sorry. From what I remember tho, Witcher 3 puts more stress on the system IE: fans more constant. I remember Bloodborne would only make them rev up now and then.

At the same time, you have people pretending that a drop to 900p would result in a rock-solid FPS, with absolutely no evidence that it's true.

If the FPS will be flaky anyway, why would I sign up for a lower resolution?

So the PS4 version locks itself in at 20 fps at times to handle the load (if it cant hit 30 fps) which is lower than Assassins Creed Unity at its worst, and the Xbox One version has no framerate cap so the gameplay suffers from more judder. Why didn't they just delay the game? Surely they knew about these problems.

Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.
Why is the X1 not capped at 30 like the PS4?

For cutscenes.

Anyways, from the GB bombcast, it seems like its framerate issues are superficial in any platform, ps4,x1,pc as the game seems to be really incredible.

Is there any explanation why they capped the ps4 at 30fps and not the xbox one?

Sony bias? ;)
Seriouly, I guess both versions should've gotten some more tuning as the difference is not really explainable. Both versions have their own problems and which is worse seems to be a question of which system you prefer currently.
As I said before, I expect patches soon for both systems.

Its really strange that the ps4 is capped at 30 while the x1 version has no cap at all but seems perfect for it with a fairly consistent frame rate over 30. Seems like an easy fix, hope it comes soon.

I agree. I think it runs beautifully on PS4 taking in consideration this game's scale and graphical achievement. CDPR did the best they could with the PS4 hardware. People expecting better performance on consoles are just delusional

Exactly this. What is wrong with a few frame drops when traversing the massive environments. Of course it would be preferable to have a completely locked 30FPS target, but it's not like a frame drop or two is the end of the world. Furthermore, CDP may release a patch in the future to improve performance. Cutscenes, on the other hand, need to be fixed ASAP. Mid-low 20's is really sluggish.

I'm still deciding between the Xbox One or PS4 version. Not sure i like a sub 30fps framerate for the PS4 version. I need to see both versions to compare...

Fucking hell. Saying 'worst event in Hyper Sports' should have been a clue that line was a joke.
I still don't get what's the joke here. The fuck does hyper sport mean anyway.
When I said 'what's your point' it should have been obvious to note that I didn't get the joke you were trying to make...why would I ask that otherwise.

Edit: Wow if you are referring to that game that came out in the 80s, then that's one poor ass reference. lol

I hope a developer makes a game in 1080p/60fps that has you walk around a cubed room for 5 hours until the credits roll. Then maybe people will see how ridiculous it is to go on and on about the minor technical deficiencies of a game that otherwise has unparalleled depth and content.

We are nitpicking a massive open-world RPG; hyperbolizing and catastrophisizing without giving credit to the enormous amount of content that is having to be pushed out at any given second.

I honestly wish I felt the same as you, but framerate issues are much more annoying thing than having slightly lower image quality. Framerate directly affects gameplay whereas resolution doesn't.

I would definitely prefer a lower resolution/less details if it meant the game stayed locked at 30fps with no drops.

Not sure which version of the game I'm buying personally (PC vs PS4) mainly because my PC specs are pretty comparable to the PS4, so I don't know which would be the better choice. Of course, on PC, I'd have options on tweaking graphic settings, so... yeah.

I was responding to someone talking about the OT.
Oh, gotchya!

Doesn't an extra frame of latency at 30hz seems like madness? (rock and a hard place decision making) I haven't played any 30hz games in a really long time, but my hand feels a slight sluggishness even at 60hz when tripple buffering is activated...

As a PS4 owner I was wondering whether it was worth me splashing the cash on a GTX 970. Now I know the answer.
I don't understand your expectations it runs 30fps most of the time with minor dips watch the video, the only games I've seen completely locked so far this generation is the order and forza 5 CD project done a good job with both versions

Mgs5 confirmed cubed room.
