How can I increase my adrenaline?
I do combo's and parrys without getting hit and I swear nothing is building up at all.
Is the little skull meter the adrenaline meter?

no, that's toxicity.

Adrenaline is the 3 boxes to the left of your stamina meter.

Btw, speaking of Quen, what does increased Quen sign intensity give me?

it simply blocks one hit, right?

I'm planning on buying the witcher for PS4 but I'm waiting until the first patch that fixes some bugs is released and until then I'll stick with Destiny.

What I want to know is how does the combat feel compared to other open world games like Skyrim and is it good. For reference I think the game with best combat in these types of games is Kingdoms of Amalur and Oblivion/Skyrim have some of the most atrocious mellee combat around.

the combat feels great. it's really rewarding because patience and proper use of signs and dodging make you able to kill monsters that outlevel you by plenty of levels.

it's not just hacking and slashing in most fights, you'll always have to keep your back clear of attackers.

My quen blocks multiple hits, but I'm not sure if it's from upgrades or the sign intensity.

I think it depends on how much the damage of the hit is going to be. I've seen my Quen stay up for 5-6 attacks, but more often than not it's gone in one.

oh, maybe it does block at least one hit, or multiple hits if the damage inflicted is below damage absorbed. Might as well upgrade it when i get my next open skill slot
It never lets partial damage get through though.

Anyone try an alchemy build?

Some of these decoctions seem really cool, but not being able to use other potions during combat isn't. You could get around that in the alchemy tree. The oils skills seem really powerful as well.

You can use other potions with decoctions.

Yeah, they're hilarious, in TW2 some of my favorite scenes are the ones involving trolls, still haven't run into one in TW3, I'm way behind most people.
"Your eyesight is shit, you drink too much" is one of my favorite Geralt lines of Witcher 2. Never expected to ever say that to a troll.

No, that's your toxicity level. The three blocks under your stamina bar are for adrenaline.

How does it build up? It doesn't seem to do anything

Fighting humans can be fine but the game leaves a lot to be desired with its mechanics overall.

I haven't noticed it doing very much

do you really need an alchemy build, though?
isn't there this tier 1 alchemy skill that basically increases your toxicity pool by a whole bunch (+X for every known alchemy formula)

that should be enough to allow for a decoction AND a few uses of Swallow.

I always see it go up while fighting for more than a few seconds. If I'm in a battle against something big, or if I'm against a group I see it go up. I never really notice the difference though.

You know I thought that first area was big. Then I get into Velen and its just now dawning on me, after spending hours just on a few quests, how big Velen is compared to the first area. I'm walking through this little village town, seeing like 4 houses on my map, and then scrolling down to see a gigantic massive metropolis with 50+ buildings showing. Amazing.

I play with no mini-map and have since starting. The less crap on my screen the better. I just open my map if I get myself lost. But it helps in learning the various landmarks.

Beyond mutagens enhancing the skills. Does it matter that much?

no its just getting the right color coding for the skills and mutagens to achieve the bonus effects, but it does seem to have made quite a difference for me

I haven't noticed it doing very much

my igni has the force of a flamethrower now instead of a candle, the sign intensity is where i've noticed the most difference

Sometimes I'm expecting to meet someone young but nope. Apparently in this region you're a child, then a 35-something, then old as fuck

Yeah, it might also be tied to strength of the hit, not sure. I'd also highly recommend the alt Quen ability as it's super powerful.

My shitty +5% bonus damage mutagen gave me +20% damage when I put it in the same slots as my skills. That's quite an enormous increase.

Also my Quen has only ever blocked one attack, and I've used it A LOT. Even when upgrade with a place of power buff it still only blocks once I believe, however it pushes the enemy back/stuns them for a second when they attack.

Adrenaline is built up by melee attacking and not taking damage. There's 3 bars. Everytime one of the three bars is filled, you're granted +10% attack damage, for 30% in total.

That's just the basics. In the talent trees however, there's various skills allow you to use Signs to build up adrenaline, as well as expend adrenaline to cast Signs when you're out of stamina...or even increase your Signs' strength at maximum adrenaline. Also, If I recall correctly, at the very of the "Attack" tree, one of the skills allows you to randomly insta-kill enemies at maximum adrenaline.

yeah, i upgraded 5/5 igni to get to the 2nd tier (to get the Axii alternative mode - for that trophy). Gonna be the first skill i'm going to replace with 5/5 tier 1 quen.

luckily, all talents also have a passive bonus (stamina regeneration for sign skills, potion duration for alchemy skills, adrenaline generation for combat skills) - which means that even those points put into the "wrong" skill have at least some positive effect.

If you had to compare it to another game of this style what would be the closest.

Same question to you aswell but also what did you think of Skyrims combat as a comparison.

Combat is some of the worst mechanics in a third person game that I have played. Geralt is light as a feather, slippery (keeps moving after you let go of stick) and attacks lack impact/punch to them. Disappointing after all the progress thats been made in combat in past 7 years. Game is simply spam bomb/sign/block and then hit while enemy is stunned. of and lots of dodging. Easily the worst part of the game.

Same for you as well and which game is it closest to and what would you consider a good combat game in his style.

Yes ,but because your Toxicity remains constantly high during the 30 minutes the decoction is on, it makes it hard to use potions without getting poisoned. It might only just take one more to go over the limit depending on your base toxicity.

I could be wrong, but I only tried it a couple times a while ago and killed myself fairly easily.

If you have strong enough quen and/or weak enough hit it can block more then one.

I ran into two trolls in a cave somewhere and they complained about eating rotten onions. Then I had to fight them while they kept farting the whole time :lol

'hey you look like a man of the world, should I stroke my vegetable at least once a week?'

I'm guessing greyed out quests mean I have out levelled them? I have been doing side-quest in Velen until I reached a point where they are 5+ levels above me (I'm lvl11)

Moved onto the main quest for a while and headed to Novigrad and on way picked up a few side-quests that are now grey colour.

Are we near OT2 yet?

Also I've had 2 lesser red mutagens for like the entire game, I can't for the life of me get another. Don't they drop off Endregas or something?

i honestly have no idea since i barely play "games of this style".

It's not as "tight" as the Arkham games, that's for sure. But it does track which enemy you're trying to hit pretty well. Countering as well as dodging work pretty well, so combat is much more than just 2 dudes with swords slashing each other's faces, and looks a lot better choreographed. This falls apart though once you fight larger groups of monsters / enemies, as then it's just about to constantly hop back, fast-slashing your attackers, maybe launching an Igni flame to their faces.

I haven't played the souls quests, but i believe that on harder difficulties you MIGHT be able to compare fighting bigger monsters to some of the souls games?

Big story / contract enemies are - unless you're ridiculously overleveled - a lot about knowing when to attack, when to sit out the enemies attack and how to dodge.

sadly, the "Quen" sign, which is a shield that blocks one hit, makes defensive play against single enemies far too easy.

So I'm playing on normal and I think I'm leveling up too quickly for the actual story missions, but I still find combat not too easy. Ugh what to do.

well the problem is that all enemies seem to drop their own versions so you can't combine them

I've got 72 Mutagens. I have a Greater for Green and Blue but I'm still struggling to get a third normal Red to crate a Greater.

- 8 Red - Highest is 7% Attack
- 35 Blue - Highest is 10 Sign Intensity
- 29 Green - Highest is 150 Vitality

Thank you - this is the first explanation of adrenaline that I've seen. I must have missed the in-game tutorial.

I finished the game the day before yesterday, and put in over 125 hours, and still never had a Greater red.

Same for you as well and which game is it closest to and what would you consider a good combat game in his style.

I think though Skyrim is no major contender for combat that its better than W3. In Skyrim when you start getting powerful the game does a great job providing that feedback, plus few things are as great as sniping someone with an arrow in Skyrim and seeing them fly like they were hit with a Ballista.

The Witcher is different in that its badly executed. Your movement is slow and has this weird floaty feeling. There is a constant disconnect between Geralt and the environment he is in.

Input lag is a very real thing as well and at least on consoles can be really frustrating when your used to having a responsive character especially coming from something like Bloodborne.

Humans are the only thing in the game that feel satisfying to fight because they are encumbered by all the same issues you experience as a player. They are slow and allow you the time to plan your attacks. Its when the game introduces monsters with large AOF attacks and swarming patterns that it just gets exhausting because your reduced to just dodging haphazardly out of the way until a small opening happens using your magic to push threats away and swinging hoping you can get the hell out after you connect before the endless swarms hit you again.

I can't compare it to anything cause I have never played something badly executed.
Maybe a really slow Assassins Creed that used remote play as your primary input.

Even though the combat is bad the story is so excellent that I find myself completely consumed with it. I love all the side quests and the inventiveness in the world and lore. Its sublime. Its just a shame actually playing it is such a far cry from the polish seen elsewhere.
