Is there any precedent of XSeed working on localization, with Namco Bandai handling European publishing duties?

Probably for the best...

I will be happy to play SC and then jump to Sen No Kiseki, better that than nothing.

Given how long it's taken to get SC out the door, how on earth is XSEED able to potentially put out Cold Steel at the end of the year? Does it have substantially less text, or has Carpe Fulgur been working on this after their work on SC concluded a while back, or...?

I would assume different teams are working on them. It would also make sense that the newer game is a higher priority and so would receive more staff/time/money.

Well, XSEED registered the domain back in January.

Speaking of which: http://trailsofcoldsteel.com/

What sucks is that Ao is supposedly really, really, REALLY good and better than Sen, from what I know. I wanted to play the Crossbell duology more than I wanted to start with Sen from how many good things I hear about it.

If we're going to get more games in this series in a more timely fashion, XSEED will need to hire or contract with more people. I wonder how the economics of it works out. FC barely sold enough to justify SC, right?

FC's lackluster sales were, at the time, attributable to the fact that it was a PSP game. When FC hit Steam it got more sales than it ever did on the PSP quite quickly.

It'll be nice for English speaking fans to be closer to caught up starting with this game. Hopefully 2 can come out relatively quickly after the first game. Rumor has it that Falcom is pressuring XSEED on these releases, as they should be.
I hope that's true. Less pervy games, more Falcom.

They are better games than Sen 1, that's for sure.

It's Sen no Kiseki, the second most recent game released in Japan. It's a new story arc separate from FC/SC, although there are plenty of callbacks. In order:

Trails in the Sky
Trails in the Sky SC
Trails in the Sky the 3rd
Zero no Kiseki
Ao no Kiseki
Sen no Kiseki <-
Sen no Kiseki 2

Thank you! Crossing my fingers this localization is indeed a go.

Ever since hearing some of the OST for this game last year I've wanted to play it very badly. Hopefully the date is true and it is coming out this year.

I hope that's true: it would be my first Kiseki game, and judging by some gameplay footage, it's a pretty interesting title

The leak comes from GAME Spain.
Bandai Namco distrubuted physical copies of Ys: Memories of Celceta in Spain along with NISA.

I really hope this won't affect localization of XSEED own games. I mean Marvelous games. Marvelous has been creating awesome games lately and all of them need to hit west. Popolocrois, Luminous Arc, Senran Kagura Estival Versus and IA/VT. And now we have Net High.

Still, I'm getting this day 1 on Vita. Hopefully in 2016 because I want to play Estival this year.

If they don't please Falcom, then they'd probably lose their partnership with them. The amount of time SC has taken is basically insane, and there's no way anybody involved is pleased with that.

But why would Falcom even want to abandon the partnership? The renewed interest in their games is pretty much 100% thanks to XSEED, who bothered to update Falcom's old PC games to great success when Falcom thought that there wasn't any money to be made on PCs. Not working with XSEED any longer sounds like something that would be very shortsighted and not in their interest.

I doubt that anyone is happy with the TitS 1 and 2 clusterfuck, but with TitS originally just not selling very well, I don't really see what XSEED could have done differently in the end. Putting more resources into SC just wouldn't have been financially viable.

Anyway, it will be very interesting to see how the market will react to Cold Steel. With the PS3 on its way out and the Vita not being super popular either, I'm not quite sure if it'll end up selling enough copies. I definitely hope so, though.

If Falcom really wants to push Trails in the west, they'd probably need to port it to PS4 and/or PC, though.

From what it sounds like, the actual translation of SC was finished a while back, and it was in the editing phase for the last good while, and now it's in QA. So during that time, the translators involved were not tied down.

I don't know how much of the translation was done by Calpe Fulgur in the end (considering all the drama that surrounded the project), but at least SpaceDrake previously stated that he wants to work on something different after SC is completed before jumping back into the franchise.

For what it's worth, he also said that they don't plan to outright skip any games (or just not 3rd, not quite sure anymore), but that they might prioritize other Trails games over it for the time being. This was before people discovered the Cold Steel website.

Regarding Namco "publishing," it's probably just an error/placeholder.

These are all from NIS America, but have Namco listed:

Danganronpa Another Episode - http://www.game.es/Product/Default.aspx?SKU=114533
Dungeon Travelers 2 - http://www.game.es/Product/Default.aspx?SKU=114537
Lost Dimension - http://www.game.es/Product/Default.aspx?SKU=114531

Given NISA distributed Akiba's Trip for XSEED, it's possible they'll do the same for Sen no Kiseki.

Ah okay, thanks for the clear up. It would've been an interesting if they teamed up to work on the series.

Of course, XSEED would have to do the same fantastic job overseeing/translating the series they've been doing - Tom's been keeping an eye on Carpe Fulgur's work and making sure they don't mess with things, it would definitely be quite a job trying to rein in the meme-tastic NISA translation team.

My hope is that once they catch up with Trails in the Cold Steel, they'll go back and fill in the gaps with Trails in the sky 3, zero, and ao

Falcom has been Sony platforms only with third party Chinese hackjob ports for the Chinese market's PCs for years and years now. The last straight up PC game they released that wasn't just an updated version of one of their older PC games was Zwei II in 2008.

Speaking of Zwei II, I still suspect XSEED bought the fan translation right before it was completed so they could release it on steam. Maybe that'll hit this year too.

Not letting XSEED have a monopoly on Falcom games would be a good start. Other companies have expressed interest in Falcom games, but the deals have not gone through at least partially due to the relationship with XSEED.

SpaceDrake is an editor, not a translator, and I'm sure Carpe Fulgur will be working on other stuff going forward.

Hopefully not on anything related to Kiseki considering how spectacularly SpaceDrake's desire for fame backfired and messed SC up.

Now that my Japanese is up to snuff I really need to catch up with this series.

I don't know about your japanese, but I am going really slow on SC. A lot of kanjis and some that aren't very common. Not difficult to understand what is happening, but I am missing on some details.

Gotta speed-up, since I want to play those before the english release.

It's finally happening. And it's nice to see Bamco involved, they're stepping up their game.

Edit: Oh, right, it might be an error. It's actually pretty common even on Amazon to have Bamco listed instead of NISA.

I wonder if we'll get a Steam release as well, then?
There's no existing PC version and I doubt they have the resources to port it there just for the west considering how many games they're working on.

What the in the bloody seven seas is the fuck happening?

So much Japan, so much love. Someone kick me in the nuts because all these "announcements" as of late must mean I'm either in a coma and dreaming.

But what is weird is that NAMCO part....

ayepp. But man, I've played the games...I buy the games and I understand 1% of the games but I still play them badly :D

Yeah, seriously. Stella Glow, Lost Dimension, Legend of Legacy, Summon Night 5, Youkai Watch, Bravely Second, TitS SC, Sen No Kiseki... Those were all "up in the air" or even unthinkable in some cases, yet here we are.

Meanwhile, S-E can't be bothered to give Dragon Quest any attention... -.-

Wonder if it really is a "prestige" thing or that they just don't posses the localisation muscle for them. Still, DQ:H is better than nothing. Just hope the Japanese VA will come with it. Even if it is a Pre order bonus I want it :) Will of course try out the English ones but man Yangus in Japanese is like heaven.

Sen 2 is definitely equivalent to Ao, IMO. Though both games have things they do better than the other. Sen 1 is the odd duck of the 4 games. It's good but it's pretty different in game setup and tone when compared to the other 3.

Great news, I'll go with the Vita version.
I hope the other games get localized eventually.
I wonder how sales will be considering it's releasing on 2 dying platforms.
Looking at FC's PC sales, a PC version would probably do more than PS3 and Vita combined.

It could happen but i doubt that xseed would do the port they lack the manpower for it.

related from a recent interview with Nihon Falcom's company president Toshihiro Kondo

With the recent releases of Gurumin and Ys VI, six of Nihon Falcom's PC games are now available to English audiences through Steam. As a whole, how well have your English Steam games sold compared to your more recent English PlayStation releases?

To be honest, we were surprised to see that many of our titles enjoyed better sales volume on Steam then PlayStation. There are some titles that did way better than when sold in Japan as packaged goods on the PlayStation; there are some titles that are worthwhile businesses based just on their North American Steam sales. Suffice it to say, we are very aware of Steam.

I haven't even played Sen but I just gotta think they're killing their fanbase going FC/SC/Sen 1 since FC, the first half of SC, and Sen 1 are all the slowest games in the series. I'd have to guess a handful of players are just gonna write the series off with those.

They'd be killing their fanbase anyway if they decided to release 3rd/Zero/Ao first and then move onto Sen without ports being done for it. It's either get Sen out within the next decade and have some sort of sales until a port is ready, or come out with the other 3 first and risk Falcom not even giving 2 shits about anything but mobile by the time Sen is ready, just like every other Japanese company. The other 3 games can quite likely be gone back to when they don't have nearly as much on their plate as they do now.

I would honestly doubt that enough of the fanbase even cares to play everything in order, at least not as much as they do actually seeing the games come out in the first place. For most fans in the West, FC was their first Trails game, they will not suddenly bail out of the series just because they skipped the games in the series that are not required to actually understand the story in Sen. None of this really matters all that much to begin with though, not when we have still only seen a single LoH game that had mentionable sales. If SC somehow bombs, then the series is dead and buried even without any other releases here. A single worthwhile release so far, is not enough to start complaining about whether or not they should release X first or Y.

I'm not getting my hopes up until XSEED says something. And it's probably gonna be some 2018 release or some far off distant future.
