Power Drive 2000 Kickstarter. the Blood Dragon start screen with talking 80s Car.

A friend show me the trailer and the kickstarter yesterday. As a big, BIG, B I G 80s fan, I'M LOVING IT. Immediately had the idea to make a Neogaf thread, because it seems like they won't reach the KS goal, but hey, here it is. Great job, SalsaShark.

Come on guy, this has to be succesful!

Just tried the demo, looks really cool. Handling feels nice too, would be good if you could do some drifting around the corners (excess drifting around corners is an eighties thing too :^)
EDIT: Added it as a favorite on Steam to give it some more exposure.
You can drift. Square (PS) or X (XB). Then it's like "shift + direction input" on a keyboard.

The controls list has "jump" and "fire" on it. Do those inputs actually do something in the game?

Just gave the demo a shot myself as well.I think I'll back this.

Probably just teases for the full release.

Just downloaded and played this. Hmmm. It's definitely a rush of stylistic neon and vivid eighties awesomeness and the music is killer but it feels somewhat limited? And I don't mean limited because it's a demo. I mean limited as in what would a full game based on this concept be like? You essentially just boost forward down a neon tunnel and regardless of how awesome that is in terms of the rush of music and visuals the scope here seems so narrow. So narrow I'm not yet convinced nor confident this concept can support a fully realised game. Not yet at least.
Limited as it may be right now, I doubt the demo was indicative of full-blown gameplay and actual track layouts. As mentioned by someone else, "jump" and "fire" are mentioned in the controls list (while unable to use them right now) and I got the impression the dev primarily focused on the visuals as well as making the controls functional, so I'm optimistic he'll create something more enticing in the long run... provided he will even reach his funding goal.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
It's funny how I had an idea for a game almost exactly like this - the 80's neon retro-future aesthetic... definitely something I will contribute to, let's just hope they nail the music.

Holy shit, this project looks amazing! It looks very similar to another kickstarter from a while ago though, the name escapes me but it was also very 80sey, a very hotline miami-esque color pallette and it had 4p local MP

Yeah, I know you brake with the square button, guess drifting doesn't work the way I expected, I'll have to practice.

Interesting art style.
But not sure if i like the backgrounds. Look poor with this abstract figures. Hope is part of the preview build.

I'll give it to em, the game looks exactly like their video. Definitely a cool look, hopefully it makes it.

Dang this looks cool. Also, this type of synthy music does not get old at all to me. I'm digging these sort of soundtracks lately in movies too like The Guest and It Follows. Granted they're not as beat heavy just more synth sounding, but still same vibe to me.
My theory with synthy music making a comeback is because it's really not like anything out there nowadays. It's less heavy as most electronic dance music you hear, and feels more "cold" and alien. It's a reason why I always felt it was a perfect sound for horror movies, you get a feel of isolation and inhuman coldness. You really can't do that with a typical Han Zimmer-esque "epic" score.

Apparantely chromed logo + curved grids + pink is people's idea of what the 80s looked like. Reminds me of this PBF.
Not really. It's more based on sci-fi pop and commercial art of the 80s. It's just one part of the decade that seems to resonate with people nowadays. Music wise, I think the reason why that sort of synth has made a comeback is because it's not like anything else out there and allows a unique experience. When there's a void and someone's sick of what's considered normal or modern, sometimes something out of the ordinary(be it original or a blast from the past) becomes popular again because it goes against the grain.

I tend to have more a problem with 80s-set movies that don't even try to present the era right, and either go into full-on spoof(where everybody is wearing neon clothing, headbands, leg warmers, Michael Jackson Thriller jackets and such) or "let's just hire a bunch of hipster looking actors and just SAY it's the 80s(and play 80s music to remind the audience it's not now, but the 80s)". I think I'm more critical towards THAT type of shit. To me, shit like this is MORE of a disservice to the 80s than the whole "retro future pop art" thing:

That shit's as 80s as a fuckin 80s themed dance.

This trendy pseudo 80s style is already starting to get old.

Different strokes, I guess. I can name MANY different modern trends(and people that are gushed over) that I believe has gotten older than this.

Wow, the kickstarter seems to be picking up since yesterday, let's hope it will continue this trend.

This might get funded after all and if that happens a DeLorean will be added as a bonus. Also the game is now headed for the PS4 as well.

Past half of the goal now, only six days to go and currently trending towards 69% of the goal.If this picks up more in the last 48 hours it could make it.

More frequent updates were promised by the developer, it would probably be wise to start doing that now.

I'm totally interested in this, I'm all about the whole 80's aesthetic! Most likely will Kickstart this now, thanks for the heads up! Also, watching this it was hard to not picture Kavinsky.

Holy shit, this looks awesome. I've gotten into this style recently with my artwork and I dig everything about it. I'll be keeping my eye on this for sure.

The pledges have really been picking up the last few days though, and today even moreso.
This could very well make it.

I quite enjoy watchng these kickstarters evolve, it's pretty exciting.

Come on, brehs. Back this.
I would have done so if they didn't make the DRM-free version $5 more expensive than the Steam version. Also, Steam + DRM-free like other kickstarers have done isn't too much to ask for when you back a kickstarer which may or may not give you a complete high quality product.

Yeah, the music had me before, but this demo totally has me.

It'd be awesome if they could get a shout out from the Kung Fury folks or something.

That and Signal Noise did mention he had talked with the devs before about design, don't know if it has gone beyond that or could help with exposure.

I'm all over this. Definitely getting nostalgia vibes, plus it looks like they're actually adding some meat to this to keep it from being just a gimmick.

The amount of pledges has really collapsed today after the massive spike yesterday. That is really strange, I wonder what caused that.

Searching around it looks like it was this Destructoid article posted 22 hours ago. It's the only notable and major news coverage in over a week. I'm guessing that's probably what caused the spike. This KS' problem is just awareness and press attention. Anyone who sees a trailer or screens for this loves it. The work this guy has done is extremely impressive.

I say we keep this thread alive to help the KS reach the goal.

I'm pretty sure it was due to the Super Best Friends video:

COME ON, GUYS!

You're an 80s fan and you love the 80s music and a good arcade racer?
Back this Kickstarter here. 4 days remaining, another $15k needed.

I guess it was a combination of the Destructoid article and the Super Best Friends video.

He really nailed the eighties 3D animation look which works wonderfully in combination with the synthesizer music.

I say we keep this thread alive to help the KS reach the goal.

I've been trying to :^)

Love all the Gifs. Keep this thing going.

Backed once I found out there's a PS4 version. I also shared it on Facebook for what it's worth. Here's to hoping!

Thanks for responding to my post! On a positive note it was trending towards 75% of the goal when I posted earlier and is now trending towards 80% at the time of this post so over the last few hours the pledges have begun to speed up. I guess it's because it's rapidly running out of time now and the last minute pledge rush is starting. I'm confident the increase of pledges towards the end should just about get this over the finish line. The final few days of rush pledges should just about push this over the edge.

Also I appreciate your efforts and I'm sure the creator does too. Quite a few pledges came from this thread so your efforts were totally worth it.
