Nintendo files trademark for "Diddy Kong" in Europe. Can you dig it?

Aw heck yes, Diddy's Kong Quest 2 here we come!

...I still don't think this is actually indicating anything concerning Retro and their E3 showing. Still guessing it's Metroid related, but the salt here is great while it lasts!

I remember when some people from Gaf hinted at rumors about Diddy Kong Racing 2 being in development.

http://mynintendonews.com/2014/07/12/more-diddy-kong-racing-2-rumours-pop-up/

I'm gonna have to finally come out and be "that guy" in this thread.
Never thought this would be something I could say, but I have a line of communication with Monster, and while I can't confirm 100% it's DKR2, I can confirm, perhaps well outside my comfort level, that they're working on something for the WiiU that is pretty much talked about by everyone involved as the most exciting thing to be done on WiiU yet, and that they are certain it's going to blow people away upon reveal.
I genuinely wasn't told details because while I may want to know, I don't trust myself with that much knowledge, so it's likely best they didn't either.

DKR2 to be released in 2016, codeveloped by monster and retro. monster is handling the 3ds version while retro takes care of the wii u

it has a longer development cycle than usual because it will be the first 'unified' game (ala Smash Bros) produced by Nintendo of America. it is far and away Nintendo of America's largest project to date. All NoA hands are on deck, including redmond's NST

the article in the OP got a few things right:

- The of success of MKWii was certainly one of the driving factors behind NoJ's renewed interest in DKR2

- it is no coincidence that Retro was involved with the creation of MK7 (since when does EAD work with 2nd party American devs??)

- it is no coincidence that Monster helped Retro with DKCTF

- Tanabe is a key player and is largely responsible for making this all happen

and he got some things wrong, mainly about the politicing between Rare/MS/Nintendo.

some more info

- SPD3 (Kensuke Tanabe's USA wing) and NoA have been granted significantly more funding and freedom going forward regarding game software development

- Amiibo's were critical in reviving NoJs interest in DKR2. internal forecasts show Amiibo's will sell like hotcakes and nintendo is going to make amiibos of nearly every franchise they have ever owned. one major objective of the game is to boost the popularity of lesser known franchises in order to push amiibos

- let me preface this next one. Right now the corporate MO is unification. believe it or not, nintendo has been making serious strides on the backend to become a more modern company and they have nearly finished restructuring their datacenters in both the US and Japan. Unified Accounts, Unified Operating System. Unified Everything. in the same sense nintendo is trying to unify NoJ and NoA by empowering NoA to develop original IPs (thru independent and indie devs) and strengthen existing B team brands from Japan

- at the same time, NoA is trying to unify its core developers in america to match the new model in japan (think smash bros)

If it's more Kong from Retro, then Nintendo have really gone overboard on this DK revival. Not saying the last game wasn't good, but I'm not hankering for more after two very similar games from Retro.

Highly doubt Nintendo would create their own competitor to MK8 as well, so highly doubt it's Diddy Kong racing.

Hope this whole thing is just random trademarking.

If Retro Studios have been working on another Donkey Kong game, I'm going to lose my shit. That studio has SO much talent, they could do whatever the hell they wanted!

What if they want to work with Donkey Kong? That ape is actually cool man.

Don't think this points to anything actually, but I'm ready!

Why? We got three Metroid Primes, why can't we get three DK games by Retro?

I agree partially. I would prefer Retro to work in a new IP or in rebooting an old IP. But if Retro working on a fourth Metroid Prime is a good thing, Retro working on a third DK game is also a good thing.

So you guys really think that one of Nintendo's most highly touted studios is making a spin-off game based on a side character from a flop game.

Huh.

Please tell me Nintendo isn't dumb enough to think Mario Kart's popularity would carry over to a Diddy Kong Racing game. The DS remake bombed.

That said, if it was DKR2 by Retro, GAF would dump all over it. I think I'd be fine with it.

Can you imagine the E3 event announcing this by Retro and then, at the end, Metroid by Platinum? GAF would crumble.

to summarize

Retro: "Can you dig that"
Nintendo: Diddy Kong trademark filed
Web rumor: Diddy Kong racing 2 cancelled for Wii by Monster Games
Monster Games: racing games developed for Wii, DKCReturn port to 3DS
Retro: co-developed MK7 "retro-tracks"

here we go!

Hell yes...If it's a new Diddy Kong Racing, I'm fully on board.

But man...the salt is going to flow. I wanted Metroid more, but any new Retro Studios game is welcomed by me with open arms.

Honestly, not that I dislike DK and the games Retro have put out are great platformers, I'm not hankering for more and would rather see them do something new and surprising.

I think it's too soon. We have a great looking 2D platformer starring Yoshi coming soon so I'd rather see Metroid or something else from Retro. Of course, I'd probably be the least mad person here if this is fucking Donkey Kong.

This will be a bad E3 for NIntendo if this turns out to be from Retro, and XCX is show again in Japanese form with still no release date other than 2015 and no Paper Mario U in sight. We already know Zelda is not going to be at E3 or even release this year, so what do I get excited about from Nintendo?
