Some of the 'new features' in the OP have been around since the Ezio trilogy with poison darts that turn enemies against each other

You misread that part:

Part of the new stealth system is the ability to use the environment to your advantage: This includes throwing knives into walls to distract enemies or hiding inside carriages. Or shooting a hallucinogenic dart into a fire to make enemies turn on each other.

Environmental interaction is the new feature, not the items themselves.

Nope. I'm done with the series.
Not because of mechanics/sameyness though, because they basically abandoned the story/are content will dripping anything that progresses the whole overall story.

I play them every year and generally love the series, but Unity made me feel the same way. When I look at a map and see this -

AC-Unity-Map.jpg

- it makes me feel like I don't want to play anymore. There's so much stuff - not content, just stuff - I feel like I'm not doing or seeing because I'm not willing to go pick up every last thing.

Ubisoft, give us more stuff like the murder investigations and less stuff like the chests and we'll be golden. Hundreds of collectibles doesn't make your game any more valuable, it makes it obnoxious and bloated.

That map is making me nauseous. I'm the same as you, I feel as if I have to do it. I can't help but feel I'm done with the series unless they revamp that aspect of the game. Your idea is pretty much what I have in mind.

Seems we'll have to 'unlock' several districts by beating the gang leader, then we have to synchronise smaller parts of that district and then we'll be treated with an unfair amount of crap.

Such a shame too, since I love the setting.

I fail to see the distinction aside from a new way to prompt the action

Well, yeah, that is the distinction: combat items can now be used in conjunction with the environment instead of solely on enemy targets. If you feel that's an inconsequential addition, fair enough, but the notion that it's not a new feature because among the items you can use on the environment are returning ones simply doesn't make sense.

Although some nice changes, like soft stealth or mostly going back to how it once was, I'm still not even near buying this at launch. After playing, and pre-ordering, every mainline AC game since II I'm completely worn out of the formula and after Unity which was the worst ever game I played last year, and even more, I will put this series onto the shelf. Until some modern day story arises again...
Also I can't say 30% larger map would want to make me buy the game, I felt like Unity was way larger than it had to be.

It's an "enhancement" on an feature that once existed in the series in some way, just like stealth mode or the fact that throwing knives can know be used for sound distractions.

AC games to me are like CoD to some people - I end up buying them each year despite promising myself that I'll wait for some critic reviews. I'm digging the London setting, though. But will need to see more of the game at E3 before making up my mind.

Any info on the modern aspect of the Timeline Eden?

Or are are Ubi hiding that until release as usual?

I hate how they've totally butchered that aspect of AC since Desmond.

I get the majority of people hate the modern day timeline but I think Ubi have to respect the modern stuff a little more

Same dated mechanics and horrible mission design in this one as well most likely going by the footage. I dont think we will ever get a good game anymore out of this series. None of this info is convincing.

It's much less pretty visually than Unity. It doesn't have quite the period piece cinema lighting and color :( my favorite part of Unity. How can it have the same lighting system as Unity supposedly if it is also on a day/night cycle? Unity wasn't dynamic (which gave it gorgeous global illumination)

Maybe we just haven't seen the right shots yet because this gif looks good:

Are you taking a similar approach to Unity regarding the modern-day storyline?
Yes, we are following in the footsteps of Unity, and we’ll be talking more throughout the summer about exactly what we are doing with the present-day storyline.
Apparently there's a reason why we're able to play as the twins. The most interesting parts from Unity's modern day, as in the big alien-like twist, was cut but still recorded. :( Not expecting that to happen with this game though.

Remember they just showed the pre-alpha build, (no idea how old it was either truth be told since the stream was pre-recorded). Unity looked like this in pre-alpha.

I'm expecting at worst, slightly worse visuals than Unity. Since they're bringing back the day & night cycle and what looks to be much better rain effects.

Every game since the Ezio trilogy has had such garbage stories.

As I see it AC1 & 2 used historical characters and setting to tell a story. The subsequent sequels are more like history bingo (or a child of 5 telling a story ....and then he was he at the crossing of the delaware....and then he played parcheesi with John Adams..and then...)

How can people still care about Assassins Creed after the last few games screwed up so badly? (except for Black Flag)

It's like comfort food,I am not blind to it's flaws but it's a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours

When it was revealed, Unity looked as good as the final product so the pre-alpha shots aren't really the same thing. I'm hoping the day night cycle just shifts between one of four baked times of day, because baked lighting is what made Unity a contender for greatest lighting yet. Dynamic time of day does just about nothing for me and is much, much weaker in visual impact due to its limitations like we see in Witcher 3.

Full blown day and night cycle.

Black Flag was bad, it's an AC game for people who don't like AC.

Also, not everyone likes the same thing.

I'm a pretty big AC fan and I loved Black Flag. The pirate aspect may have appealed to non-AC fans but I didn't feel like it was missing any major features of the previous games.

Yeah i get that but wasn't it the general concensus that AC:Unity was broken as hell - visually and mechanically - and hit an all time low for Ubisoft/AC games?

This is probably accurate. IMO it's a bit dull but I wouldn't call it bad. The technical problems buried it though so it never really stood a chance. AC Revelations is by far the worst game in the series, but it seems to get a pass because the expectations weren't particularly high.

Having that in the back of my head i find it hard to be excited for a new, rushed, release.
It definitely wasn't broken visually, (that face glitch bullshit was experienced by the smallest amount of people possible as it was fixed by day 1 patch and was only on the pc version, anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar). And the mechanics were great but held back by unfortunate technical issues, majority of them have been patched out. It's a shame too because for all that hubbub about female characters it contained one of the best examples of how to do a female love interest in a modern video game.

Welp, I hated the fact that in modern day for Unity I was just some random dude with a "Helix console" approached by assassins because reasons.
More of that coming up now.

At least Black Flag let us explore Abstergo and even that was pathetic imo.

My expectations are low but I'm hoping Ubi can do better here.

Stripping out the modern day story was the worst thing about Unity. Made it feel so pointless in the AC continuity.

I'm sure they've heard all the complaints about the modern day. The abstergo stuff had a lot of little *wink wink* nods to the lore, the fanbase, and Ubisoft as a company but the majority of the effort was clearly put into the historical aspect, even more so with Unity. Hoping that they do better or at the very least make it less obvious that the story was very toned down during production.

After Unity and another Ubisoft style boring, uninspiring "paint by numbers" snore fest of fetch missions and meaningless quests, I think I'm gonna give this one a miss.

Yeah totally.

Again, we're probably the few who had an interest in the present day.

I found it great for having some build up with what you were doing in the past,
connecting to all the Minerva/Juno, first civilization, future templars vs assassins etc going down in the future.

I very much enjoyed those little nods.

But I don't want to ever play in first person again haha.

I'd like some sort of Desmond type character to connect us to the past but maybe that's just wishful thinking.

Ubi probably just want to keep you roped into the historical side of the story which is sad but understandable.

I too miss the modern day elements. I thought it was handled best in AC1 and Brotherhood, being a cold corporate conspiracy. AC2 made it some weird lame hot hacker hideout and Revelations had cool stories but basically skipped progressing the story. Black Flag was silly meta buildup and Unity was almost no modern story at all.

Full blown day and night cycle.

I disagree with the claim it "wasn't as good"

Most games use baked lighting because it just plain looks better and there's nothing wrong with it. From my comment above, you can see I immediately was underwhelmed by the lighting. I would take baked again for the visual jump any day. Unity had some of the most beautifully dimensional lighting ever done and that was thanks to it being baked. I'd rather any game strive to do what Unity did than something flatter thanks to dynamic like uh... W3.

But that's where there is some preference involved. You may like dynamic cycling, particularly for open world, but it's not inherently better and Unity wasn't wrong for it. And for me, the loss of finely handled global illumination is far too big for me to like the jump back to weaker but dynamic lighting.

But eh, I'll keep watching. I sadly must admit this may be the first mainline AC game I don't get at launch. A step back in visuals, seemingly both creatively and graphically, are a big issue for me.

I can't believe that Ubisoft would intentionally limit themselves to 1868. Victorian England has some of the richest and most interesting events and they want to spend it all in one freaking year!

Instant turn off for me.

Something tells me that this isn't the last that we will see of Victorian Blighty from the franchise. Remember, they managed to make the Italian storyline last for 3 iterations.

The modern day story are just so bad and lazy now, sure they had problems and were kind of bad but they were all that tied these games together and would make me come back to see what kind of batshit crazy stuff happens this time, now there is no continuity. Everytime there is a generic character (you) and insert artifact here, you have to go through a lot of random stuff for it. yeah whatever. Pre black Flag the games had a continuity now it's whatever, with Unity they didn't even bother to make anything, just some videos lol.

The tidbit about side missions, lol sounds like a whole lot of same. These games are just too safe and boring now, like I have already played them, even the stories are same... how many 'origin' stories they want to do?

The only positive thing I have to say about the games right now is that their PBR is the best I've seen yet. Unity looks great indoor and outdoors and lighting changes very nicely.

The best way to play Assassin's Creed games is to not play one each year, and only do the story missions and any of the side missions you find fun

Soak in the atmosphere, enjoy the visuals and settings (which are normally unique in that they're not used in many other games)

If you buy the new game each year and try and 100% it you're going to end up hating the series

Although I'm definitely no fan of him or his work, Ryan McCaffrey put it well during E3 last year when he said 'one year there isn't going to be an Assassin's Creed game'. The trouble is, who the hell knows when that is going to be?

They have pushed at least one of these things out every year now since 2009 and they don't show any signs of stopping. Even given a concurrent development process in Montreal, they just won't have the time to put the kind of care, spirit and attention to detail in that that CDPR did.

Yea I agree to disagree, because i've been consistently impressed with Witcher 3's lighting and visuals. To me its the prettiest game out atm just because of how i'm constantly compelled to stop and walk around just to take in the sights. The last game where I felt compelled to do that, was, well Unity. I don't think the lighting in that demo was very representative of the actual game though, it was soooo bright that it seemed like it was intentional so that we couldn't see all of the unfinished buildings and textures, especially during that scene where they're standing on the carriage in front of the monument, at least compared to the trailer.

Well 'pretty' is a rather subjective way to put it, but I'm sure you've caught from graphical threads lately that there aren't so many who would argue it is actually best graphically, compared to Unity or otherwise. It is nicely styled, but not as technically refined on a details level compared to many other games.

I stopped after brotherhood and was already getting series fatigue.
Plus i was starting to hate Ezio.
But I like this setting so I may return but definitely not on day 1 after unity. Ill wait a few days after launch for technical analysis.

I know we can choose either twin during free play but what about story missions?
Can we always choose or would i be forced to use one over the other?
Screw the bro I wanna play Evie all the time.

Another reason why Quebec is leading the development this time is so that Montreal gets an extra year. Looking forward to it.

This is what I want and probably won't get.

A more interesting compelling story, get rid of the Assassin vs Templar bullshit.

Don't need a bigger city than unity, what I want is a more interesting city, that doesn't look like has been made of prefab blocks surrounding singular buildings. Unity was pretty but shallow IMO, although it did have nice areas here and there.

I don't want to have a map legend that takes the whole screen with 30+ different things, when 70% of them are crap, I don't want to have shit in the map that I won't be able to access without phone apps, or dlc or uplay. Make real sidequests, keep and enhace the procedural events , but focus on a well written experience.

Better combat, It's never going to be Bloodborne, but cut down the animations a bit and make it feel more active and fast.

30 fps this time please, for real, not drops to the tens on console.

PS: let me play without the fucking hood.

After the witcher 3 I just can't play an assassin's creed game this year or ever again maybe.

It just doesn't compare.

Ubisoft have also shat on their fanbase and I've been constantly disappointed with their games since Revelations. The last AC game I truly liked. It's like AC lost its soul along when Ezio died.

They've also completely screwed up with unity and as a French fan, I can't forgive them. It's a deal breaker. It was a total piece of shit and almost offensive towards the history of France.

The Rope Launcher is such a ridiculous gadget.

Where does he store the rope drum, the compressor & airtank to shot the dart and the motor to wind the rope up again?

yeah, for some reason I dont think they are going to throw out the premise of the entire series

Of course they won't, but I personally think we had more than enough, it's not interesting enough to keep going back to it year after year.

Let the AssVsTemple war going in the background... But do not keep making it an integral part of the characters identity and goals, that's what I think they should shift to IMO.

More like blackflag than unity for example.

That would be a very risky move on Ubisoft's part. The Japanese already did some great stealth assassin games years ago with Tenchu etc and are absolutely not going to want a foreign company pissing all over a heritage which many of them take extremely seriously.
