the disappointment should have been anticipated more strongly:

i see a lot of people were blindsided by what happened. here's where your expectations should have been going into this:

-they said no zelda wii u at e3
-they said no nx at e3
-they said no mobile at e3 (or qol for that matter)
-they're not going to reveal stuff in late 2016 or late 2017 like everyone else is (except maybe smt x fe), because that's when nx is coming out.
-they had already made somewhat big announcements in star fox, fire emblem if, and smt x fe in the leadup to this year's e3 showing. the amount of surprises left afterward were bound to be minimal.
-blast ball used the metroid prime hud so it is obviously part of metroid prime somehow (seems everyone got this)

so basically they were going to focus on early 2016 and late 2015, which is everything for this fiscal year or whatever they plan to have before next e3. i'm looking forward to the zelda and paper mario games we knew nothing about going into this, and i'm excited to try star fox later this year. it's actually a nice lineup for 2015 when everything's been moved to next year, but the show itself doesn't instill the same excitement as some of the other conferences like announcing backwards compatibility or shenmue iii.

...hate me...
Also, seems like they should have saved the SMM new stuff reveal for the actual event. Wasted showing on NWC.

Next year will pretty obviously be all in on the NX.

This was a bit more barren than I thought it would be, but I'm guessing they delayed a few projects to NX that would have otherwise filled in the rest of the year until it came out.

It makes sense too, because why waste more output on two EOL platforms.

Overall I didn't find it very upsetting since I was expecting things to be winding down.

It was a meh showing. I'm really interested in Mario Maker and I was one of the few people that liked Starfox but everything else was underwhelming. I didn't think it was as horrible as most people think, but they had the unfortunate timing of showing their stuff after Sony, who just fulfilled like 20 years of fanboy wet dreams in one night.

Cool Facts: Game of War has been a hit since July 2013
Nintendo can only so do much, the other companies have 3rd party software to fill the gap when they don't have exclusives. This is the wrong time for Nintendo to reveal anything big, most of the biggest Wii U titles have already been announced and the console is reaching its end. Next year's E3 will be probably be fantastic because they'll have new stuff to show for the NX, but there probably aren't going to be any more great Wii U titles that haven't been revealed.

This year was a travesty; I feel really bad for Nintendo, it's like kicking a wounded puppy at this point.

At least Paper Mario x Mario and Luigi and Star Fox looked good.

Everything they had screams do what you can with existing assets while we put our main teams on NX.

They should have just outright admitted that they have moved on and here are some titles we hope can keep you busy until next gen. Because that's what this is.

Emergency direct inbound

I will not be surprised at all if that is what they do after E3 or at the very end of it put something else together. The overall impression everywhere seems to be they blew it big time. Not that the games themselves save for the Metroid appear bad but the overall presentation was horrible. They wasted so much damn time and effort. We got two Fire Emblem related games, stuff not appearing until 2016, one completely in Japanese untranslated while they ignored Devil's Third and Fatal Frame. Two games that needed pushes and attention to not completely bomb that release this year!!!!. Then they waste what was also a full 10 minutes talking about Yoshi of all f'n things even though they've already talked about the last few directs.

Yeah if the message Iwata got was people were disappointed at best then great! This was a complete disappointment and it undid all the hype and good feeling that Sunday generated I feel.

For their sake, I really hope NX launches next year.
They need to unveil that thing early next year, have a great showing at E3 and then get it out for the holidays.

good with gravy
I don't think it was like that at all last year.

But yeah, it's hard to tide over a D.O.A. console for 4 years.

2014 was awesome.

And 2015 started really nicely with Smash and NWC.

They are also coming off a lot of good will with the successful launch of Splatoon.

Since E3 2014 Nintendo fans have been pretty happy. Smash, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta, Mario Kart, Splatoon, plenty of DLC, yoshi coming soon. It has honest been pretty good. This direct was a complete reversal and hype killer.

I thought it was pretty obvious what was wrong with it.
The games we know about look great (Mario Maker, Yoshi, Xenoblade, Fire Emblem IF & SMTxFE); all classic Nintendo polish and quality.
The new surprises however feel like filler to wait out for NX in 2016; lacking in the depth and value of the above mentioned games: Animal crossing spin offs, Metroid Spin off, Zelda Musou port. Zelda Three Swords & Mario RPG look like quick expansions of their previous entries (I'm being overly critical here, those two looked the better of the new games).

The other part that annoyed me was squandering the opportunity to broadcast your games to a live audience who's attention you have. 200,000 people watching yet you didn't show a Devil's third trailer, or Fatal Frame trailer; instead we get to listen to a developers interview for Mario Maker for the third time.

Had they released this video on Sunday, I doubt anyone would be complaining. They should have rode the high of that first day and doled out bits and pieces throughout the week to stay in the conversation.

The format wasn't necessarily bad, but they needed to seriously cut down the "dev diaries". Talking about the thought process behind SMB1's first mushroom powerup is cool, but it's pointless in the context of "announcements, announcements and more announcements". They should have capped it at Miyamoto talking about the inspirations behind Star Fox/ideas taken from SF2 and kept it at that, then continued launching through their lineup rapid-fire.

It also doesn't help that there's nothing really separating it from any of their previous Direct videos. A Mario competition and a bunch of anime/spinoffs aren't exactly going to inspire the same kind of hype when they're put in the wake of what might be Sony's best conference ever. Likewise, those weird "Mario turns into different creatures/items" interludes was handled better at the NWC on Sunday.

Even if this is just a stopgap before the NX, they could have handled it better.

Nah, not really. It was bad, but 2012 was worse, and 2008 was a level of disaster that is almost entirely unreachable.

There is a point where those conferences added humor or something that "redeemed" themselves.

I straight-faced cringed at the non-self awareness with those creepy/crignge-worthy puppets.

It felt like they were trying to push memes or give the worst developer talks in E3 history:

"These arches gave me the idea of putting arches you can pass through in Starfox."
"You are a yarn yoshi. You eat yarn enemies and make yarn balls. These yarn balls are how you progress in the game."
'Legends of the triforce was made for local multiplayer (used incorrectly) with your friends because of the insane reactions from your friends. [insert name] was funny because he is the loudest in the studio.'
*awkward pause as person breaks into a laugh*
" It's true I'm the loudest in the studio!"
Such cringe.

Developer talks took up 50%+ of the conference and they added nothing you can't gather from screenshots. Absolutely nothing insightful or intriguing.

They knew they had an awful presentation. I'm not surprised. Wii U is dead, they're not going to waste any more resources on that. I expect an exciting showing next year...Hopefully.

Pretty much. I'm kinda surprised they're pumping out another 3DS Zelda game though and there was no 3DS localisations in there.

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
It's obvious they're putting everything in to NX and it shows, so the argument about Nintendo being in transition carries a some weight.

But at the same time, Sony and Microsoft have been in "transition" years as well, and both of them have never, ever, ever had a conference as dreadful as Nintendo's was today. Nintendo had nothing.

MS and Sony aren't supporting two platforms though. Vita and 360 died years ago from a first party perspective.

Nintendo has only recently ramped up it's development capabilities, the last few years have been full of delayed titles, droughts, outsourcing and different teams being drafted in to finish other games. They are still not in a position to support an HD platform alongside a handheld, not under their own power. The lack of third party support is slowly killing their platforms because they just can't get the software made fast enough. That's why we get a bunch of hurriedly cobbled together spinoffs like we saw this E3.

Even if Zelda is only for NX (it's probably for both Wii U and NX), they should have just showed a fucking 30 second trailer for the game. They had NOTHING to replace the gaping hole left by Zelda's absence.

The new 3DS Zelda seems built nigh entirely with A Link Between Worlds assets so I imagine it's a pretty small investment that lets them experiment in cool ways.

I'm not sure if this Digital Event speaks to them transitioning away from a dead Wii U and aging 3DS or if it's a much larger paradigm shift toward cutting back the large scale games in general (even more than they already have been) and shifting almost completely to these cheaper, smaller side-story experiences that are more in line with a shift to mobile-like projects.

I mostly think this is due to the lack of third-party support on their platforms. To be able to support Wii U and 3DS on their own they need to make more games, which means smaller scope. On the Wii they had few, but rather big games because they had support from others.

I think they will be trying to attract a lot of support for whatever the NX is, and in doing so perhaps be able to make more ambitious things. So I'm not so sure it's a paradigm shift as much as a short-term strategy that may or may not have to continue in the future.

They announced literally two Wii U games. TWO. Animal Crossing Party and Mario Tennis HD. Keep in mind that this console also has zero third party support. Overall, an unmitigated disaster.

Both fairly sensible reactions.

I'm still a bit underwhelmed, somehow, but I can't say that they didn't give us adequate warning. The absences of Zelda U and NX were both pretty big red flags.

it could have easily been featured on the treehouse stuff as an intro to the extended gameplay there.

in the direct it felt like padding because they had nothing
I honestly prefer those cleanly edited dev stories to a bunch of nervous devs trying to relay a message to millions of people live on a crowded stage. It's so much more natural to me and presents the game and the people behind them waaaay better.

Honestly, I can sense how uncomfortable a lot of those people are at those conferences. It's weird.

Exactly how I felt about their Wii U showing. They're doing admirable with stuff like Yoshi, Star Fox and Mario Tennis considering it's a platform with limited appeal.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???

I agree; though messaging was off-point and I think everyone would say as such.

There is a way to present information and I think they failed miserably on that end - as seen in that various threads pertaining to Nintendo's E3 presentation.

I'm guessing Zelda is going to look different from what we saw before when its shown off next year.

Everything they showed looks to be something made with reused assets so they can pump them out quick and free up their big guys.

I know this is an unpopular opinion....

But I don't think it was as much of a disaster as everyone is saying.

There's some awesome games coming out in the next 6-9 months for Wii U and 3DS.

All this while obviously prepping 2 new platforms.

They could have blown everyone's minds and announced stuff that will be out for NX in 2017 or whatever, but stuck to what is realistically being released soon. It's not like NX is not getting Zelda, Mario, etc. how much better would the conference really have been if they said "new metroid in 3 years" and showed a logo and nothing else?

Just saying... It wasn't an amazing conference but it wasn't terrible imo.

I agree. Additionally, I go into it with the expectation that Nintendo doesn't see this as a conference. They see it merely as a lead-in for their week of streaming. They also care more about tone and presentation than building a list that can stand up on hype, so they'll do something like have Miyamoto reminiscence about his career rather than work hard to feed the hype beast. The whole talking bits work a lot better in their edited videos than similar awkward speeches in front of a crowd.

Is Keighly grilling Reggie this year? Id imagine he would have some added fuel for that this time around.
