Okay, you just sold a game on 2 gifs.

And a little out of topic thoughts: my impression of the new Hitman is largely bad because how women are portrayed in that trailer... Bikini swim suit, runway size 0 models and basically sex object. Perfect. :(

aye, Halo 5 coop is plenty diverse, i would say.

Feels good, man.

I'm actually shocked some people haven't cried about political correctness or whatever flavor of the month word that some of our more embarrassing straight, white, male gamers use when a game isn't pandering to us.

Picked up on this during the MS conference and it seemed to continue through most of the conferences. Almost every single IP either has main character gender choice, female main character or female companion. Very clear reaction as it takes ~2 years in the game industry to get AAA title up to presentable quality.

Ignoring the woman that gives you your contracts. Also, I think a game like Hitman has its place when you have alternatives.

Oh boy. Oh boy, oh boy.

I think it's fair to say that Hitman is set in its ways, and not the game to ever look at if you never found yourself interested in it.

I think this has to do in part with the advances in mocap we've seen, as well; while Vale didn't have a prior description in terms of her appearance, Tanaka looks fairly different compard to her incarnation in the comics. She's East Asian / African, and while she looks predominantly black in Escalation she looks a lot more mixed in-game. I think this has to do in part with both Vale and Tanaka looking a lot like their mocap actors, though. Probably easier to go with designs that have features closer to those of the women that are doing the animations to avoid any potential jankiness in keyframing, etc.

Plus, if you're not going for a full on cartoony art style, it makes sense to base your human (or humanoid) characters on, well, humans. For example, the Mass Effect series is a good example of using actual people as the basis for your designs.

If something like that turns you off, then this would definitely not be the game for you. Far too intense of a franchise.

So one out of like a couple dozens in the trailer?

edit: And the movie trailer is no better, YIKE. I should probably take the advice and stay far far away from this game.

What about all the other "isms"? It's not just women who are underrepresented right.

Can't wait for the wave of elderly, half black half Chinese, slightly overweight body type, male pattern baldness, transgendered, disabled protagonists. All with average sized penises, because if it's not small or average it's sexist and unnatural.

Don't worry, the gaming industry still caters to us overwhelmingly. Your world isn't ending mate.

I said kinda and just compare her to the other characters in this thread. She's definitely not a conventional beauty that you could put on a model runway or whatever.
I did not mean that as a negative, I was surprised as usually a trait of female characters is being sexy, doll-like etc.

She looks conventionaly pretty to me. The only "different" thing about her is her hair colour. And that she isn't "dolled up".

Oh gimme a break.

i noticed this as well.

Didn't the Halo 5 coop gameplay have 2/4 female characters.
Fallout can have a female protagonist.

We had multiple women presenting during the conferences.

Say what you will about the media coverage about female representation in gaming, but the publishers / developers seem to have really taken the hint.

E3 this year wasn't as much of a sausage fest as last year's, both in games as well as presenters, and that's no coincidence.

Gives me a lot of hope for the future. Very happy to see this.

I am so excited, as a male gamer, to play as female characters, I'm so tired of male characters, I love the badass archetype that Geralt of Rivia, Big Boss and Adam Jensen show, but I want to experience different things in something as big as videogames.

My favorite female character was definitely Aloy from Horizon, followed by Faith. But I'm sure I'm gonna love all of these characters.

Hitman promo stuff's always been like that.

Hope he's never seen the nun fight CGI trailer!

woah this slope sure is slippery right now, better exercise some caution folks

Its okay, women are actually human just like you and are actually pretty easy to relate to. Especially since most of these female characters are humans first (and superhumans second, looking at you and your eight foot pickaxe vertical leaps).

GRANTED if most of these characters are stoic, bland, and lacking emotional resonance, then true "equality" has been achieved with male characters. Sadly a boring character is still boring regardless of their gender. Hope we don't have a wave of bald female space marines to compliment our boring men and instead have a cast of interesting and unique women.

DOUBLE GRANTED though since they aren't prototypically held to the "grrrrrr must be stoic and aggressive" asuka personality type female characters should be inherently better written just on that front alone - and Emily was already a great character when she was just dreaming about being a grown-up. I have Faith that video games are improving on the fronts of inclusivity and believable human motivations.

Go into any Halo 5: Guardians thread and you'll see people spitting venom over anything and everything about Agent Locke save for his voice acting performance in his live-action "all hail the conquering hero" trailer. It's pretty easy to pick out which people think media he was featured in happen to suck like Halo: Nightfall, and people that just so happen to hate every fiber of Locke's being because "reasons." I even saw a "Locke's voice sounds like it should be in a car commercial, not a game" complaint. In a franchise whose three most prominent voice actors are Jeff Steitzer, Jen Taylor, and Steve Downes.

It's a good start but I'd like to see a bit more racial diversity. I hope this trend continues and we get to a point in the industry where we don't have to ask for these things and devs just include them from the start. And hopefully Latins get more love in the next batch of games cause right now I'm not seeing too many. :'(

Ugh, well thankfully I've steered clear of the thread then.

Why is it parroting in this case?

something something people of color need to take steps to get protags of color in games themselves and not wait on devs to do it, all-white straight 18-35 male dev teams write what they know, The Order: 1886 was the pinnacle of next-gen diversity and gamers should be thankful, something something

I'm sorry but I have to come out of the closet and say that I prefer the mass market sexy ladies of yore. These women are too homely looking to keep me interested. I don't need Ivy from Soul Caliber but definitely something closer to that direction than this.

Sorry bud, but the feminist push in games is pretty much going to ultimately only benefit white women. We'll get one main hero or so every few years but for the most part PoC's will continue to remain mostly sidekicks and npc's.

Hopefully these women were planned at the start and not because feminism.

I think the girl in Horizon was PS4's answer to Rise of Tomb Raider.

I really want a PS4 just to play Horizon.

I don't see how any of them are homely.

Yeah its great there are more female protagonists but almost all of them are pretty white girls. Still much more room for diversity for different races and body types.

i disagree.

more sexy bodies

i will concede more cheesecake for the ladies.

I'm hoping this becomes a normal enough thing that in a few years we don't need to make special threads that demonstrate the long and painfully slow process toward anything even resembling gender diversity in gaming. We don't even need gender parity. Just enough diversity for things to feel more natural.

I am terribly afraid that's the case. The fact that most of the responses mirror that gives me a sinking feeling feminism being about equality doesn't extend past a certain point when it comes to some people who wave that banner.
