Why can't they just hire a writer and give us a story in it? It looks amazing but why keep playing after visiting a few planets?

We pray, friend.

lol yeah, that seems to be about the extent of it. I mean, I'm 100% in favor of modability in games, I just don't see how they would allow for them in a PG'd universe like NMS. For one I'd imagine they'd have to let you generate an entirely new universe and then switch off the online components since the discovery data you'd upload would be incompatible with the universe everyone in the vanilla game would be playing. And then even if that was possible, it doesn't sound like there's a "stock" anything. There's a template ship/creature/plant and all the sliders for it that have them form in all kinds of crazy directions, but still ones that can exist given the other system rules in the universe, etc... It's not like somebody can create a demon Thomas the Train Engine and just have them swapped instead of those Sentinel creatures, right? And total conversions? That seems completely incompatible with the core system that they're building here. Everything about NMS' universe generation is really interesting and exciting to me, but it also seems like a system that isn't mod friendly at all.

I simply hope you can meet up with a friend to fly and explore together. Isolated exploration is only fun for so long.

I don't think it'll be easy or even feasible to meet up with friends in this game, but you can bet your ass there'll be tons of people making a herculean effort to do just that. It's gonna be pretty cool.

I have a HUGE suspicion that they were aiming for November, but when Fallout 4 was announced for that timeframe, as well as like 80 MILLION other games, they were probably like "nahhhh we're moving it."

Yeah, first thing I thought of as well when that Fall lineup started solidifying. I hope that means an even earlier-than-planned release, however...

Maybe Sony are planning some sort of splash release, maybe at PSX.

"Play it now!"

This seems super likely as well since NMS has been touted as a marquee PS4 title and this is Sony's big event now. I can't see this slipping even further into 2016 territory since Q1 2016 looks to be packed as well.

Because this is an exploration game, not a story driven one.

There is a story btw, it's just not prominent and they want the player to experience it.

So its seeming like the ultimate form of progression in this game is;;

-Level up your stuff.
-Get further into the galaxy.
-Find secrets along the way.

Exploration is great and all but im fearing now that there just wont be enough variety to make it feel worthwhile, which is why i feel its totally critical they implant a bunch of really obscure secrets all over the place, that have some real depth to them. Kinda like a FEZ type of deal.

I hope they implement proximity chat in case we do meet people. Last thing I want to do is shoot a friendly player just to have him lose all his shit.

And, while you can destroy the environment, I wonder how deep this will be?

I doubt there will be destruction where you can explore and find something like a cave? Underground chambers? Mountains to explore? Deep, deep seas with variable sea creatures at different depths?.

Everything in the environment is destroyable. Yes it is possible to come across cave systems from digging and whatnot. Sean has mentioned there being caves that can stretch out for miles. The existence of underground caves seems like a weird thing to doubt.

Seas can get extremely deep. Sean said one time he was going to a point of interest underwater but his suit wasn't upgraded enough to reach it without running out of oxygen and he never got to see what was down there.

Haven't heard much about this but given what Sean has said about the game, I wouldn't be surprised if encountering and interacting with other players took cues from Journey or Souls games in that there isn't proximity chat, but that there are other mechanisms available to communicate with.

The more I read about this game, the more my expectations are tempered.

I think this game is over hyped and some people are hoping it's going to be some very in depth game with a lot of systems and missions etc. I don't believe this will be the case. Personally, I don't really think that is a bad thing, because it's going to be different. That alone will be a draw.

Information at this point is pretty sparse, but I believe it is simply a game where you explore a vast universe and see lots of cool things, collect data, craft some simple items and so forth.

All that being said, I am very excited to play No Man's Sky. Just, the more I read, the more I realize this game is simpler that people think and I have my expectations tempered.

as long as there's a way to communicate I'll be happy.

I'm looking forward to this but I'm still not sold.

Planets are planet sized, great but what is there to see on any given planet that would make you want to do that?

People complain about cut and paste stuff in Assassin's creed or Skyrim. This sounds like it will have even more of that.

So that pretty much confirms every-single-planet is going to have life on it in some form? BE it organic or robotic (IE The Sentinels)?

That's going to get so repetitive, there should be planets that are just utterly and completely devoid of any lifeforms.

Planets made up of noxius gases, and just more vairety

Every planet shouldn't be some habitable living world.

I'm really looking forward to this, has got a real 'Minecraft in Space' vibe to it and I think I'm going to really enjoy the exploration aspect of it, just getting into a zen like state and enjoying the chilled vibes.

I'm not seeing anything on that list that confirms what you're saying. What you're saying goes against what the devs have been saying about the planet variety and life.

They'd have to be pretty out-of-touch to not know that 80 million games were coming out in November, whether they were announced or not. It's the month when half the games of any given year launch.

Yeah, but Fallout? Honestly, that game is going to make it tough even for other already well known IPs, nevermind a new indie game (Even if it has had a lot of hype).

The only game coming out around then that I think has a chance of not needing to worry is Metal Gear V (Cause it's fanbase is just as rabid).

They may have been fine with what they already knew but then Fallout showed up.

So good.

Keep the news coming.

Also I'm going to get a lot of hate for this but I'm not hoping it comes out this year, I would like April 2016+. November - March is just so stacked already, I want to have something to look forward to after those games; and I would like to play those games, and that wouldn't happen if this came out around November, it would be NMS the majority of the time.

Oh it was atlas not atlus. I was wondering what they were thinking copying atlus's name.
This kind of bothers me, and I'll use music to explain:

I'm a musician - so naturally I write and play music. These songs that I write - they're made up of an array of notes to choose from (G, A, B, C, D, E, F and all the sharps and flats of those notes).

Now these are the only notes available - in the whole entire world! With that in mind, it's only a matter of time that you're going to hear the same arrangements of notes in a plethora of different songs..songs with different messages and meaning.

Now back to NMS, I'd like to think that Hello Games was referring to the Greek mythology of Atlas, rather then a plagerisation of concept.

Plus it's well known that space-naming conventions (at least the old ones) are based off greek mythology.

Sure I'll be flogged for this, but No Man's Sky is my most anticipated game. I love exploration/sandbox. I don't need my hand held to enjoy myself, so this game is right in my wheelhouse! Thanks Sean, a lot of us see what your trying to do with here! Keep up the great work!

I still hope we get this this year, but for the first time, I'm not so sure it's gonna happen.

Don't open The Witcher, Sean!

As much as I am excited about this game, I am afraid this might become boring after few hours if things don't change much and every new planet becomes a 'been there done that'. Hopefully there is enough newness to the planets to keep things interesting for some time.

I was thinking Atlas, like a map. Which makes perfect sense in this context. And while I feel what you mean with the music comparison, Atlas made sense and Atlus wasn't a word, so I really couldn't understand why they'd use it.

For context in case you didn't see earlier, the thread title had Atlus rather than Atlas in it before.

Dan did a smart thing and acted like this year was out of the question, and then asked if he could give a timeframe in 2016, and Sean had to pause and say he cant say anything. So i think there is still hope for this year.

Me too. I will log so many hours just exploring everything I can. I don't need a story or guidance as to what to do next. I also don't need space Marines to constantly shoot at. I just can't wait. Definitely one of the games I'm looking forward to most.

Yeah, 2015 still seems like a possibility.

It sounds like they need to polish up the game and the "forces beyond their control" are stopping them from giving a firm date. Wonder why (assuming) Sony isn't letting them say anything.

I was kinda hoping for some more live demoing, oh well. There'll also be something on the Playstation Livestream tomorrow at 1pm PT.

Yeah, it was sly. But Sean makes me nervous. :)

Not every game needs a narrative. Make your own story, much more fun! (Try Minecraft Adventure Mode)

To me it sounded like he wanted to release in 2015, but that something happened and it will be mid to late 2016.

How does warp/teleport/whatever work?

It seemed like Sean could just select a random planet in the demo and travel there instantly. What prevents me from just travel to the centre of galaxy immediately?

Your ship isn't capable of warping that far. You need to upgrade it to be able to get to the center otherwise you'll end up dead real quick if you try to go straight there.
