Sony was nervous about Horizon's female protagonist, did lots of focus testing

They were actually still quite nervous heading into E3.

More about his reaction after the reveal at the link.

Polygon said:
Sony was worried about a female protagonist in Killzone dev's new IP
By Brian Crecente on Jun 18, 2015 at 9:00a @crecenteb

"Personally, The Last Guardian was very emotionally important, a great reveal, but for me the announcement of Horizon from Guerrilla Games is actually the biggest project for me for this E3 to announce because it's a big project and a new IP.

"I was nervous to see the reaction from people."

There was a third reason that Yoshida was nervous to see how people would react to the game: Horizon's protagonist is a young woman.

"She's a female lead character," he said. "That has always been the vision by the team, but we had a discussion. Is it risky to do a female character?"

In fact, once development was underway, so many questions were asked about the protagonist internally, that the company brought in a marketing team to do some focus testing.

"The concern came after the game was in development," he said. "We started to show it to many more people internally and they had questions about it. So we worked with our marketing groups to do this focus testing.

"We wanted to see how people would react to some of the things: open world RPG, the set up of machine versus primitive weapons and the female protagonist. All of those things."

While the reaction was positive, Yoshida was still a bit nervous about the game's first broad unveiling.

"The focus testing reaction was positive and that made us feel good, but you know it's a limited number of people that we were able to test."

I'm hyped for this. Finally a female protagonist that isn't all sexually dolled up and can kick ass. Dinobots! Plus I love red heads and bows lol. GG made this game for me.

I would've figured a young female protagonist with a bow would've been seen as a safe choice. The Hunger Games gross millions every time one of them is released don't they, so what's the big deal? I guess a lot of the people in power still think that only young men play video games.

First things first, people who have trouble playing as women in video games are idiots.

Secondly, I suppose it does make a little sense they were nervous. Imagine if a lot of people in fact didn't like playing like a woman, I suppose it would cost a lot of money trying to change it while they were middle in development.

It's really a non-issue though.

I imagine most people buy/don't buy a game based on whether it looks good or not, not based on whether the main character has a penis or not.

Game looks good so everyone is fine with female protag.

I think she's one of the best female character designs I've seen in ages. I love how unique she looks, how she looks rugged and muscled, how she has fierce features and red hair. I love love love her design, don't change one thing Guerrilla Games.

Well it was my favorite part of the Sony conference and currently the game on that system that makes me want a PS4 the most of what I have seen. So good job overall.

speaking of female protags, where the fuck is Gravity Rush 2? GR1 was such a fantastic (if half baked) game and dammit another game needs to get made!

Same here, really refreshing design from the usual stuff we get

This is a sad thing in our reality that someone would even be worried about such a thing. I think the main character is awesome as a female. As a male, after playing Gone Home and some of Life is Strange, and years of Tomb Raider, I find I am wanting to play a young woman more often. Bring 'em on.

Whether or not they made the right choice will remain to be seen once the game is released, as long as the game is good the gender of the protagonist won't matter.

She just looked awesome and so did the game !

She looks like what's her name from GoT, Considering how much the character talks in this game, I was half expecting her to say "You know nothing Jon Snow".

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage

Hopefully canned considering how terrible the first one was.

Why would it be risky? Female protagonists are the new 'hot' thing now. Even some TV show producers won't work with scripts unless there's a female lead in them. And I'm really glad to see this trend happening in gaming too :)

The character from this game has a really great design. This game looks awesome.

I also hope that female protagonists are not just a fad, but only time will tell.

Nothing wrong with a female lead.

I'm getting tired of the industry acting like female characters are some taboo thing.

I thought she was a great character. She looked tough and fit into the style they had. Reminds me a lot of Ygritte from Game of Thrones.

it feels like the industry collectively huddled together with female protagonists this year, if thats what it takes to make them take what they consider risks then so be it.

I was so so surprised that her design didn't look like some slim supermodel with Loreal hair.

Her features looked meaty and chiseled, with that thick hair.

Why would it be risky?
It's mostly marketing. They seem to be very conservative.

As the story says it was already in development and then marketing was concerned. Same as with them not liking that Ellie was in the foreground of The Last of Us boxart.
