Sony was nervous about Horizon's female protagonist, did lots of focus testing

I'm sure there are people out there who refuse to buy a game because the lead is a ]white male or simply male. Even in this thread, there are people who say playing as a male is boring. But I doubt there are many people doing purchases based on gender going by sales of the games I mentioned.

If that was actually true, then those people would pretty much only play 1 video game 3 years, because the majority of games star white males.

Some People ARE saying, that they are getting sick of only playing white males and when given the choice they would play something different.

Also they are a lot of people who wont buy a game based on a female character, there is a reason why companies avoid making female only leads. You can cite Metroid and Tomb Raider. But Tom Raider was able to succeed initially because they create an extremely sexualize character that hand huge ass and tits.

The point if some people want variety from the usual white male lead.

Good, she looks great and they should do it for the sake of diversity anyways, not only because it was the teams vision, they already did Killzone, now Focus Testing was not a bad idea.

It was an E3 demo. She was taking the place of the traditional developer commentary.
Yes I do suspect this is the case.

Yeah, how dare the protag in an RPG give the player insight into her psyche.

"I could barely hear things go BOOM! because she was all talky, trying to explain motives and set the tone. This dumb!"
I personally don't really care either way, but let's not pretend people haven't voiced this criticism. Same as they did for tomb raider.

And that goes along with the..ok, I'll try to avoid doing jokes like this xD

Frankly it's the red hairs trend that we have in videogame characters that thrills me, it's a bit like badies guys, but not that overused.
lol, didn't mean it like that. Has nothing to do with her gender. Just pointing out that numerous posters here commented on it during the E3 reveal. Was pretty much the only complaint anyone had.

While I don't care either way, I think it would be smart to tone it down at least when she's supposed to be stealthy. I think that's what most people found jarring.

If it took focus testing to convince Sony that an attractive white female with a bow in a post-Hunger Games world would be viable within a video game, then we ain't ever going to see a minority female lead in a AAA title Lol.

Seriously? You're exactly the reason this shit has to be focus tested and why Lara had tits the size of her head for most of Tomb Raider franchise. Grow up, teenager.
Also, you think maybe you should warn people about the NSFW Google search they might make while trying to make sense of your post.
Chill out kid, it's not like he posted pics.

Really, if someone is concercend about the main protagonist gender, race or colour in a game, should quit gamming and spend that money in therapy.

I look forward to the appropriation backlash

its already started, I've seen some folk claim that they're appropriating culture and pillaging the cultures of people of color.

I'm happy she's a female. And well designed at that. Definitely my most hyped game out of this E3

The character from only what I've seen is ok. Nothing groundbreaking or special.

I know nothing of her back story or anything else so I'm not on that hype train. The whole post-apocalyptic primitive people isn't my thing but those giant robots look cool.

I'm so glad they went with a female protagonist. I think the character they've introduced thus far is interesting, and I can't wait to see her role in the story.

This is still a concern in 2015? After Tomb Raider? After The Last of Us? After...too many critically and financially successful games to mention that focus on a female character? Then again, this is the company that wanted to pull Ellie off the box of Last of Us until ND put its foot down. I can't believe they spent money focus-testing this.

lol, didn't mean it like that. Has nothing to do with her gender.

If it continues on throughout the entirety of the game, then it needs to be quest specific in the way it's handled in TW3. I only rarely got sick of Geralt because he explained things that allowed me to play without having to use the HUD or menus.

Chill out kid, it's not like he posted pics.

All I'd have to do is highlight that name and do a Google search to get in some trouble at work. He should use his head.

I didn't even think that when I was watching the trailer. Do some people get offended or steer away from an otherwise stellar looking game that the lead or character in focus is female?

Given the choice I will choose male. But if a story needs one solid protagonist then I dont care as long as it's a good character.

Hopefully the people who wont play as an opposite gender are in the minority. I would hate to think that any game is ever designed around giving the player a choice when the story would be better with a dedicated character.

i don't see why he wouldn't be at least a little worried there are so few AAA female protagonist remember me flopped, beyond two souls relied partially on star power, last of us i'm not sure who was the main character since i never played the game, and lara croft is a legend who was famous for her boobs. I know there are couple more but these are the most recent that i could think of.

I will never understand why some people are turned-off by the idea of playing as a woman to the extent that they will avoid purchasing such games. Like, what the fuck is wrong with you ?

This is a sad thing in our reality that someone would even be worried about such a thing. I think the main character is awesome as a female. As a male, after playing Gone Home and some of Life is Strange, and years of Tomb Raider, I find I am wanting to play a young woman more often. Bring 'em on.

Yes. Yesyesyes.

I thought she was entirely uninteresting but that is just me. Every now and then I can get into a female character but not often. I just don't relate to them usually.

"What year is it?!"

I was too busy thinking about ROBOT DINOSAURS to lend any consideration to the fact that I'll be playing as a woman. That said, I did note to my wife that I loved the game's character design.

I have too many hours as Femshep to feel weird playing as the other sex.

I don't either, but we know for a fact they exist (we've even seen them in this thread) so it makes sense for Sony to try and determine how many of them are out there and if it will hamper the success of a new IP.

Glad they reached the conclusion that the lost sales are worth it, to keep the female protagonist.

It's highly unrealistic, I know, but I wish video game companies would put their marketing departments on a leash. They have absolutely no business whatsoever in the creative process. None.

I'm more interested in this game because the main character isn't the same old brown haired white dude we always get with a different name

More women please... until I'm bored of them

I wasn't entirely serious.

Well I guess it matters how many people are complaining. There will always be a few.

This is literally like saying "Well, The Order flopped, Alice: Madness Returns flopped, MediEvil 2 flopped and Sherlock Holmes Crime and Punishments flopped, we should never make a game set in Victorian London again"

Folks do that with movies, books, magazines, and music so i don't see why its a big deal. I may be generalizing but i would think most men watch movies that have male lead characters, if they read its usually a male character from what i've talked to with others, if your a guy are you gonna buy the lil wayne album or the beyonce one . Magazines could go either way depending on the content lol.

Yup, the devil is in the details.

I suspect much of the concern stems from being burned by prior titles where the speaking isn't particularly helpful, is repetitive, poorly written, etc.

I don't understand why having a female protagonist is something to be nervous about.

neither do I since they have been around forever. Maybe there were fewer during the Wii/HD twin era but female protagonists really aren't that uncommon in video games in general.

I love playing as female characters, FemShep ftw.

Just image COD having a female protag? There would be glorious meltdowns (but they would still buy it).
