It's about relative performance. They've been doing "badly" overall for ~2 decades. The female solo titles, relative to the male titles, don't sell well as a collective whole. Even takng out the "top tier" Batman/Spidey/etc titles.Comics in general are doing badly. The flood of movies and TV-series didn't help much.
Best new character of E3 for me. But i am sure it will lose tons of sales because of it.
Guerilla started development of this game years before Beyond shipped.the hell? they forget about Beyond already? lol
It annoys me so much that they even had to ask "Is it risky to do a female character?"
The character being female wasn't even a thing I thought about when I watched the gameplay. I just thought, "damn this looks good."
No, not even close.
Metroid

I mean, I could go on, but to imply having female playable characters actively harms a games success starts leading into huge amounts of disclaimers about "except for games like this, despte our only evidence being mediocre titles versus good titles" territory.
so... nariko in heavenly sword was secretly a man?

Now make her silent, because that narration all throughout that trailer was seriously annoying.
At least change her VA.
Sherlock Holmes Crime and Punishments flopped, "
When the few female protagonist that exists bombs is when publishers have an issue i would think.
Beyond didnt bomb. It did pretty ok actuallyNot sure that two games that bombed would exactly ease their mind :/
On the other hand some people might think falling in love would "lessen" her strong characterIn a post-Furiosa world, I see Alloy and other tough, capable, tomboyish women as being far more attractive than the traditional feminine types.
And again, I hope that if they have any intention of including romance in the story, they don't shy away from it because "guys don't want their playable female character kissing a dude because it makes them second-hand gay or something."
I think she's one of the best female character designs I've seen in ages. I love how unique she looks, how she looks rugged and muscled, how she has fierce features and red hair. I love love love her design, don't change one thing Guerrilla Games.
Many didn't and bombed anyway. Bayonetta? Most of those games, not the main characters, sucked.
The design is cool and all, but they have to tone down the corny self-dialog. Hated it in Uncharted and Tomb Raider too.
If your main character just has to be a white person with dreadlocks, then a lady makes more sense.
Maybe it bombed because the game sucked.
It's like saying that since Catwoman was a bad movie, it's impossible to make movies with female leads.

It's FFVII remake reaction.lol wth is this from?

It's not an accident that there's not a lot of source material for solo Marvel heroes- they're all on the X-Men, a group IP.
Are Tomb Raider and Portal the only successful franchises with female protagonists?
I, for one, believe there's probably some truth to the idea that a female protagonist generally hurts sales. So all the more reason to create more female protagonists. The more developers we see creating games led by bald space marines, the more that trope gets normalized as the default, and the harder it gets to sell a game with a woman on the box. It's been happening as long as we've all been gaming.
So I go back to my previous suggestion. Burn it down. All female protagonists, all the time.
Yeah, how dare the protag in an RPG give the player insight into her psyche.
"I could barely hear things go BOOM! because she was all talky, trying to explain motives and set the tone. This dumb!"
Were EA execs "worried" as well?
I'm glad the reaction has been positive then, should give Sony more faith going forward with their action games.
Personally I really don't care less whether I'm using a man or a woman in a game, but more diversity is always nice. Playing game after game featuring a bald/dark haired guy with a gruff voice and permanent scowl on his face does get a bit old after a while.
