Batman AK PC Perf Thread of DARKNESS, NO SETTINGS [30fps cap / intro removal in OP]

Shadows and VRAM seem to be the biggest performance hits.

Locked at 30 with;

Textures: Low

Shadows: Normal

Detail Level: High

This gives both of my 680's 40% GPU usage @ 1080 / 30FPS. Turning shadows onto High makes GPU usage skyrocket to 98-99%.

The lowest texture quality still occasionally tries to utilize over 2GB VRAM.

I'm playing with the new drivers.

No, this game isn't good.

Somebody else played with the old drivers, shit was even worse.

BTW, this game always crashes when I exit. lol.

Yeah same here. I haven't completed about the first say min of the game and it crashes so hard that my mouse will not work until I close it and end steam process.

First boot, the game crashed. Second boot after a restart everything ran fine.

Everything maxed, framerate was average in the 50-70 range with really short dips down to 30 during heavy batmobile sections and boost traveling around the city, which honestly I sort of expect moving so quickly around a game this detailed. It's noticeable but with g-sync it isn't so bad.

I think it may have something to do with some of the nVidia effects, rain seems most likely the cause of the quick dips. I may end up turning them all off except light shafts like I did with witcher 3 just to get a perfectly smooth framerate.

Did another test this time still at 1080p but with everything OFF/Low and VRAM usage is still pretty HIGH

VRAM: 2550 Mb

Ohzb.png

I played a bit like this and the framerate was almost locked at 60 FPS but it did go down to low 50s, unfortunately the stutter is still there, although not as bad as before, I guess it's mostly bad optimization but also could be Unreal Engine's famous loading of assets/textures. I might move the game to the SSD to see if it improves.

What a shit port, Witcher 3 barely gets close to 2GB VRAM at 1080p even maxed out.

Okay you guys, calm down and listen.

Do not defeat the 30 fps framerate lock. It's there for a reason it seems, however this game is designed, however the engine works, it gets really unhappy if you uncap the framerate. It's much much smoother running at 30 fps from what I've seen.

This game chews through VRAM like crazy. It's constantly capping my 980 Ti's 6 GB of VRAM at 5945 MB according to MSI Afterburner. It's literally using the entire framebuffer of my video card. This is probably what is causing some of you guys to stutter so much if you're running Normal textures and you don't have a lot of VRAM on your video card.

I really need to connect a gamepad for this game, playing with a mouse and keyboard is jank city. Why the hell is MIDDLE MOUSE mapped to firing the Batmobile's cannon. Also driving the Batmobile is kind of awful with mouse and keyboard, I hope Gotham City is okay with me gouging holes in every building I drive past as I bounce off the walls. In general the Goddamn Batmobile is pretty frustrating to control, I can't believe this is what they were hyping for over a year as the big new addition to Batman: Arkham Knight.

FWIW, on my 980 Ti it's mostly smooth, the framerate is basically locked at 30 fps in 4K res with all settings maxed and Gameworks On with my machine. If I pan the camera super fast or drive straight through Gotham as fast as I can, I do notice the occasional stutter which has to be asset streaming, either into memory or into VRAM, but it's not very often. My machine has 12 GB of RAM though in addition to the 980 Ti's 6 GB of VRAM.

This game seems to be quite resource intensive but it's certainly beautiful, it's not as it's badly optimized. It's just that damn heavy on even high-end machines from what I can see. YMMV.

Thanks for posting this, makes sense.

Think I'll just max this out and downsample the game as far as I can at 30fps in this case then.

What's CPU usage like?

I took everything down to 1280x720, all settings on Low, no geforce effects, and I still got slide show framerates after playing a few minutes with the batmobile. Fuck this shit, I shouldn't have to put up with that kind of performance. Even left the 30 fps cap in the ini, so I'm running it "as intended". Same PC ran Witcher 3 quite nicely last time I played it too.

Serious Sam is a wicked gahbidge series for chowdaheads.
I'm near the top of the page, so I'll post this:

You should probably stop detective gaffing that poster:

I did some more digging and I really do think it is just a weird coincidence.

The timelines for that linkedin profile absolutely do not match the timeline for the neogaf poster.

Edit: to give some further info that'll hopefully stop people from mining that linkedin profile person:

Linkedin profile has been working in TV for a long time. Neogaf poster owned a videogame shop at the same time period. I really don't think it's the same person.

So I think I know why this game performs so bad, for most people but especially people with 970.

My game was crashing everytime after a couple minutes of playing and almost every single time I changed resolution or any other graphic setting, Windows came up with a "Running out of memory" message so I thought it was my RAM (8Gb) but that's recommended for the game so I decided to take a look at Afterburner logs since the OSD doesn't work for me at least while in game.

This is what I found:

VRAM usage while in menu: 1906Mb

VRAM while in game: 3454Mb

VRAM while driving: 3651Mb

Unless my Afterburner is giving some bad readings that VRAM usage is batshit crazy! Especially for 1080p and this game.

No wonder it keeps crashing and stuttering so much.

I have my system info running on my G15's screen to watch things.

The "out of memory" message is totally because the game is using as much of your RAM as it can, it hit 5GB on me when I had the message come up, I went back to the game and the second it hit 90% memory utilization it crashed. What size is your page file? I've increased my max PF size to 4GB to see if that affects anything. Windows 7 really doesn't like it when your RAM usage goes above 75% and pretty sure the VRAM usage is so high because of the game using whatever is free as cache.

It is pretty ridiculous that this game, which is clearly built around consoles is using A LOT more memory than what the current gen consoles can utilize.

i had a lot of stutters and then i copied it to my ssd. REALLY helped out with the stuttering. Doesnt stutter much at all now gliding and only a little bit when driving the batmobile. Seems this is a streaming issue.

I changed the .ini file a bit and now it wants me to redownload the whole game..

LOL this is so broken. GG rocksteady.

Good thing I have 300mbps down...

Alright, I've played for a little over an hour now and can share my performance with the following rig:

Titan X
16 GB RAM
4770k @ 4.5
1440p

I've decided to just let the 30 FPS cap as is. I don't feel like doing a tweak, and I'm quite content playing at this locked framerate (although it would be nice to flex that G-Sync). Hopefully it's something that they remove in a patch.

Performance is absolutely fine though. Game stays locked at 29/30 FPS 99% of the time. There was some slight stuttering in the Batmobile as new areas were loaded, but that's to be expected I suppose, and it was nothing gamebreaking. Other than that it has been pretty stutter free for me. I understand that that is not the case for a lot of people, so perhaps it's the extra VRAM of the Titan X doing its job. In the benchmark I believed I averaged in the 70's or so and the minimum was 36.

Edit: I should add that that is with everything maxed out and all of the NVIDIA bells and whistles activated and V-Sync off.

SLI users should absolutely dedicate their second GPU for PhysX until they get SLI scaling to work. Makes a huge difference if you have smoke/fog enabled

Holy fuck.

i5 4690k
Gigabyte 970 OC
16GB Ram

I'm running this at 720p, low shadows, everything else on, and my game stutters to 34 fps when I get in the batmobile.

This is horrendous, and the game looks like shit.

The benchmark at stock high settings worked OK (rock solid 55-59 FPS...) on my 970, but I'm afraid to even try playing so I'll wait until tomorrow. Hopefully there's a day one patch.
After the crash, I've checked my installation and it literally deleted all game files

I wish I was making this up

Amazing. It would be funny if it wasn't so unfortunate.

Remember yesterday when people were worried about codes not getting out on time? Turns out that was the least of our worries!

Seems like the codes shouldn't've gone out for a couple more weeks, at the very least. :(

I don't even want to know what the game would've been like if it hadn't been delayed.

So this utilizes GPU physx?

When you say a huge difference how big a difference are we talking in terms of fps?

I have a spare 660 laying around but not sure it will be worth it considering my main GPU is a 980 ti.

Re-enabling the 30fps lock does nothing to fix the constant stuttering. The fight before meeting Poison Ivy at the beginning of the game was just a stuttery mess. I've had enough.

Anyone want to test for memory leaks?

Yeah, I've disabled v-sync but I'm leaving the cap alone, it's weird how the game in spots suddenly jumps to 60FPS though. Granted I only made it to the point where you start the first interrogation before the game crashed because of memory usage.

SteveO409

Did you know Halo invented the FPS?
Unreal...7950 gpu and amd 8350 cpu. im getting like 15-20 fps on medium quality at 1080p monitor. i think i might get a refund

Had something similar happen to me when ESO first came out. My PC crashed and once I restarted my entire 1 TB HD was wiped clean. Nothing left and it had been almost full with game files, screenshots etc.

I feel your pain :-(

The benchmark is not at all representative of the actual game as it would turn out. Also the benchmark isn't subject to the 30FPS cap like the main game.

Scrooged

Totally wronger about Nintendo's business decisions.

The streaming issue is a result of the VRAM issue. It's using waaaay more than it should, which is resulting in it swapping out huge chunks of VRAM as you move around the world.

Full screen windowed still doesn't work on my 2048x1152 display. It's like it think it's a 16:10 display, it's not rendering the full height of the screen.

It runs fine for me on a GTX980 and an i5 4770K with G-Sync at 1440p.

All settings maxed including PhysX it fluctuates between 40-70fps, which stills feels great due to G-Sync.

My main issue is why the game looks like blurry ass. I noticed it with the PS4 screenshots earlier, the game looks like shit.

Sorry to hear that so many are having issues. Hopefully they can issue some hot fixes quickly to address the problem.

For anyone that has been able to play for an extended period - any luck getting surround sound to work on PC? I'm running a 5.1 system and changed in game audio options to "large speakers" but it's only outputting in 2.1 - ended up switching to headphones in the meantime.

Curious to see if anyone else has ecoeri need this.

Disappointed here. After seeing how nicely optimized the game is for ps4 I expected a very polished PC experience. I guess I should have seen it coming since Arkham City had plenty of odd issues on the PC as well despite being a lower spec game. A mutant UE3 title with loads of bolted on features seems like a dangerous thing.

I think I disabled my pagefile when I installed my SSD, never had any problems with any game though, not even Witcher 3.

I might have to turn it on for Batman but regardless it seems they did a poor job optimizing this for the PC, it might look pretty but it shouldn't be using nowhere near this much memory.

So i turned on the 30 fps cap again. Everything nvidia on (but smoke). Drove around. Smooth 30 fps. I'm ok with this.

Just wait... i lowered everything in my settings, downed the resolution to 720p, turned off all effects, and put the 30 cap back on... ran smooth for a few minutes, but eventually the stuttery framerate came back after enough batmobile usage.

agreed ive settled for 4k dsr, and sli disabled. Leaving framrate uncapped as I have a gsync monitor. fps is between 30-40 feels much smoother than with sli enabled

LOL what... mine is still unpacking... so at least you had yours installed!
Mine unpacked for an hour and a half. Then crashed whenever I looked at it funny before ever getting into gameplay. Checked the files and 4 were bad so it's downloading the entire game from scratch again.

Right. It's so weird that they'd do that but leave the benchmark uncapped. Like, what?
