Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Small tidbit about Nintendo mobile games

DeNA has asked to clarify Shintaro Asako's remarks on the firm's plans with Nintendo.

The CEO said, when talking about the genres of the first five games, "I understand some people like RPGs, casual games. That's why we decided to work together to create five games, hitting on different genre-utilizing IPs".

Well, Metropolis Defenders bombed. I'm not surprised, but still. Do Acquire still self-publish games even though they're owned by GungHo?

Surprised that Splatoon seems to have actually increased WiiU's baseline though. And Minecraft Vita's baseline. Stable consoles in today's market is almost scary.

Shame Persona dropped like a rock.

Splatoon with dems sexy long legs. Japan really embraced it (as much as any console game could be embraced over there at this point)

This is my favourite weekly thread, I'm hoping to win my 'xb1 double digit sales before end of july' bet with a friend. 100 a few weeks ago was so, so close.

I hazarded some guesses before, but I'll still go with:

Mario: Likely an autorunning game. Plausibly multiple other genres as well, but since the first game out of this partnership is going to have a development cycle of like nine months, this would be an easy fit.

Animal Crossing: Some kind of town building and/or house building game. It fits the IP very well. I suspect this won't happen until 2016 since they'll want to sell the two new dedicated device games first.

Fire Emblem: I maintain they'll use this in some kind of mobile RPG setup, whether that be anything from your standard social tapping RPG or something more active. No clue if it will play like Fire Emblem, but as far as "mid-core RPG" mobile games go, this is the most obvious IP fit.

Zelda... well, I'd be surprised if they don't have something Zelda related, but there isn't a completely brain dead obvious way to make something related to Zelda that also makes a high revenue mobile game. I could see them taking this as an opportunity to experiment more and make a game that less resembles your standard f2p mobile title, since they have 3-4 bets (assuming I'm correct and depending on how you want to count The Pokemon Company's efforts) in safer frameworks already.

The fifth one is hard to say. I could see it simply being another Mario game of sorts, like a Mario puzzle game, but they might take another opportunity to try something left field. Kirby is a relatively casual IP that has potential for a broader audience, but it's not a super obvious fit as is. They could also try to make a cross-over game that combines a lot of their IPs and experiment to come up with a gameplay model that could work. Racing games are popular on iOS, but I don't know if they would want to try converting Mario Kart without heavily re-imagining it.

Pokemon seems to be getting handled by The Pokemon Company directly and already covers the match-3 genre, so I think they'll probably avoid that in the short term.

Oh yes, WarioWare, Rhythm Tengoku (especially if it functions something like Love Live), and pet simulators would definitely be workable.

WarioWare would probably be the hardest to monetize though.

What about GTA clone set in F-Zero universe starring Capt. Falcon?

Better leave GTA clones since we have two LEGO games coming. Btw, that would be an awesome idea to fit in mobile.

What about Zelda Maker? or a later port of Mario Maker?

That maker idea is pretty refreshing in Nintendo. Don't know if there is that kind of game in smartphone devices, though.

We're in the "throw everything and the kitchen sink" phase of Japanese console development, lol.

Haha i think we've been in that phase for a while

I hazarded some guesses before, but I'll still go with:.

I think you're probably right but I hope not (or at least they different stuff coming). Very predictable choices. I hope nintendo would bring something new a surprising to mobile. Then again they could do something with an endless runner that hasnt been done in the million other and freshen up the genre like splatoon or something.

I think Nintendogs might be one of their mobile games. It is Konno in charge after all.

Do they add cats right away, or do hold that back for a sequel?

Chances of Vita getting a DQXI version?

Y'all better get ready for the most hilarious betrayalton ever.

Just further proof that Nintendo needs to make a hybrid platform.

If nintendos mobile games are the grindy kind where it starts out fine but the requirements for advancing exponentially increase until its just not fun to play without paying I will be very disappointed with them

I imagine a f2p WW would start with a free set of microgames and you'd pay new money for new microgame packs, standalone minigames... etc. I guess that doesn't really jib with the gaems as service model, though???

What about Rhythm Heaven's structure make it easier to monetize?

It's not even 600K day one. People are trying to say that Persona 5 isn't going to outsell Splatoon at all which I disagree with. How fast and if it will outsell either this year or next? Time will tell.
If Persona 5 doesn't outsell Splatoon fast (like one or two months), it will never outsell it. Stablished franchises have less legs that new franchises and RPG are usually very frontloaded.

I wonder how much of the initial P4D sales were due to the P5 Blu-ray.

I big part of them, I would like to say.

And I think people are underestimating how big Persona has become since 4, the series is not a niche RPG anymore.

I mean, just Persona Q sold close to 300k, I would say P5 can double that.

Either stamina gating for each play (yuck), or they could take advantage of the fact that in the retail game, you only get three shots to Perfect a minigame before RNG gives you a different one to Perfect. Pay for more consecutive attempts.

the nx is most likely essentially a hybrid platform, and it's still not getting dragon quest next gen. this has more to do with square-enix establishing themselves as a sony company.

if nx becomes too big to ignore, it will probably get some ports.

Nirolak, in the older thread, mentioned how Nintendo should entice more multiplatform games by allowing exclusive content for their platforms, in the vein of the recent Skylanders: Superchargers partnership.

Honestly, I really hope Skylanders is a start for their new approach with multiplaform games in general. It shouldn't be too shoehorned in, but I think multiplatform games with Nintendo-exclusive content that involves Nintendo properties too could really see better sales on Nintendo platforms. If such exclusive content involves (hopefully not in the way that they're needed) amiibo as well, even better. It'll be quite interesting to see how Skylanders will perform this year right because of the recent Nintendo x Activision partnership. It's a title that would've done comparatively decently on Wii U anyway (compared to other SKUs), but I'm pretty curious to see what's going to be the sales increase.

Yeah, it's true, stuff like this has already been seen back in the GC days (Mario & co. in EA Sports games, anyone?) and it didn't help that much. But it's possible that, with a better execution (I feel that Mario characters in "realistic" world games was a bit forced, for example. Not well executed), there can be better results.

Of course, I'm mainly talking about titles that Nintendo can (and should) get with NX, i.e. more casual-focused Western titles and a pretty good chunk of Japanese titles. Opening the amiibo frontiers to third parties could be amazing for all actors involved: imagine a One Piece game that has a specific One Piece amiibo line, or Yokai Watch. Even more niche titles could benefit. Acitivision being the first partner which could actually get its own amiibo line (based on Nintendo characters, but it's still their amiibo line) makes me hopeful things are getting more in motion for the future.

I was only discussing it due to how the conversation formed. 700K by the end of the year in Japan? That's some faith you got there.

I don't think you quite realize how far the game has permeated, lol.

I also think a lot of people are overestimating P5 (which will still perform better than P4) based on things like PQ (cross base popularity) and the expanded re-releases.

I've said this before, but we've already been seeing the changes under the skin for Nintendo's external relations.

Problem is, outside of the Nindie stuff under Baker, most of the changes aren't going to become "console apparent" until the WiiU is shed. Its simply a shackle and a dead end for any one to invest in in any form. The 3DS is too old but its also seeing a lot of new benefits from their changes with regards to indies but, again, that stuff is easy to see. (Mind you, some bridges are burned for good.)

  • 5-7 Microgames free per day/week
  • Pay for premium Microgames/boss battles
  • Pay to "keep" favorite Microgames in a library of sorts for future replayability (you can choose to keep one non-premium Microgame per week to add to your library for free)
  • Characters, obviously
  • Stamina? I dunno, they probably wouldn't want you to keep playing the same Microgames all day, even if it's assumed boredom would takeover
  • Cosmetics? Eh, probably not, you don't look at the characters that much

Just a few musings off the top.

No legs at all? This collapsed entirely after Week 10 and Week 11. I guess that will happen when you announce 2 shortly after the release of 1.
Still seems like a bad call that they said a sequel was coming so quickly, AND didn't have anything to show for it.

I don't doubt it will be ready to ship in 2016, but they screwed themselves on sales on DQH1 with that announcement.

No stamina and no consumable IAPs please :( I like games when I have an idea of the upper limit for what I can spend and whether that's worth it for me. Cosmetics are also fine.

Pokemon Rumble World's business model is basically what I would like to see from a fremium/free-to-start game.

Well Nintendo can afford to make free games with payment cap, since their intention is to drive players to their dedicated device. I don't know how DeNA thinks about that, though.

I think this is the lowest I've ever seen Puzzle & Dragons go:

Somehow I managed to read #4 as "Disney Trauma Team".

This is now a game I wish existed.

On topic, great legs for Splatoon, Fire Emblem continues to outpace its predecessor, and Rhythm Heaven seems to be doing fine but 500k LTD may be difficult to reach.

is this a joke?

Talking about faith. You are the one who said Persona 5 would outsell Splatoon easily. That's some faith you got there.

700K for Splatoon by end of the year in Japan is completely reasonable. And Splatoon will outsell P5 this year and LT.

I think this is the lowest I've ever seen Puzzle & Dragons go:

And GH still hasn't found that second big hit. It shows how hard it is to get a breakout hit on any platform. However, once you have one, you can live it off for 3 years (Rovio, King, Supercell, GH etc) before it starts the declie. It also shows how amazing L5 is by creating hit after hit.

King and Supercell have a bunch of hits though.

King has a ton of successful saga games making money and Supercell has Clash of Clans, Boom Beach, and HayDay.

If you're using Guitar Hero to refer to Activision, they have Call of Duty, Skylanders, Destiny, World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Hearthstone still bringing in a ton of money.

I'm pretty sure GH is supposed to be GungHo.

I maintain that the 'create' piece of Super Mario Maker would be a great fit for mobile and would entice people to go to the home console to 'play'.

Or they could go with the rusty model, get a good free base game and buy more game piecemeal. Iwata said he is against whale hunting and that makes me think normal mobile get-rich-quick rules are going out the window.
