He was one of us

Some will say he was a wonderful programmer, who did coding sorcery to get games like Pokemon Gold and Silver onto cartridges that had no business fitting.

Some will say he was a jovial personable man who humanized the often fitful, draconian realm of the video game boardroom.

But I will remember him as the man who ate big pay cuts to keep his staff employed and occupied where other CEOs would throw their people under buses or flee and have someone else desperate to appease shareholders do it instead.

And for that, he will be missed deeply.

You know he was really something when everyone in the Game industry is shook up this much.. Has there been something as impactful as this? It'll be interesting to see who takes his place.. What about NX? So many questions

It's so nice to see pretty much the entire gaming industry together on this rough moment with Iwata passing away. Lot's of game developers writing RIP tweets to Iwata.

Damn. RIP.

They downplayed the illness so much in the past couple of years that I had basically forgotten about it. Guess he wasn't getting better after all.

Sad to hear this. Best wishes to his family, friends and colleagues. He will be missed.

Thank you for all you've done for the videogame industry Mr. Iwata. You portrayed a pure joy and focus that is often missing in society and in life, let alone videogames.

Isn't the last thing we heard from Iwata about how he was sorry for E3 as well?

I think that makes it worse.

E: apparently so

I was in the middle of tearing down our Comic-Con booth and I had to take a few minutes. I'm literally sitting here crying. I feel so stupid snd pretentious because it's not like I even knew him, and I'm just a game journalist + Nintendo fan. But Iwata-san was directly responsible for so much of what made my childhood awesome, and for so much of what I love now as an adult. He always seemed like he had such genuine love for Nintendo, video games, and Nintendo fans... like he just adored his job.

I can't believe he's not going to be the face of Nintendo Directs anymore. I can't reconcile how he's just... gone so suddenly. This is hitting me in a much bigger way than I ever thought possible. I'm just heartbroken.

Rest in peace, Mr. Iwata.

Exactly how I feel.

I haven't cried in years and I am full on weeping right now. Way too soon, way too young.

I know I keep posting but I can't believe this. I am so sad.

Damn this genuinely hurts. I never really felt sadness for someone I never met. Somehow this hurts as if I met him. I truly send my condolences to his friends and family. RIP sir, you will always be a legend to us.
