I...I don't understand. :(

But I don't wanna be rude by asking this, but in all seriousness, what is the protocol for this? Is there anyone who was chosen to stand in for Iwata in case this happened since I imagine Nintendo probably felt this might be coming, until they can officially decide a new President? Who is the most likely person?

Genyo Takeda and Miyamoto are the current representative Directors so I guess it will be one of them.

We lost one of our own today.

It's easy to be flippant about death when it happens half a world away, and how you will go about your business tomorrow without a thought about Mr. Iwata and the amazing work he did that improved your life and mine.

Tomorrow PM, when you get ready to lay back and enjoy your night of gaming, think about Satoru Iwata and the positive impact he had on your life. He didn't cure some disease, nor did he create a wonder of the world.

What did Satoru Iwata do? He injected fun into a business that is, all too often, by the numbers. What DLC will you buy, what expansions will you purchase, will you be my bitch for $99.99?

These are not questions that Iwata asks. What Iwata asks is, did you have fun playing our games today, and did we bring some light into your life? That is all the man wanted; to be the president of a company that brings joy to as many as possible, for the least amount of money his shareholders will let him.

These are the questions Iwata asks. Good night, friend.

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
Someone shop the ribbon onto the wall.

Ouch. This picture is just depressing now...the picture on the wall makes me think about like the pictures you put out on a funeral.

Genyo Takeda and Miyamoto are the current representative Directors so I guess it will be one of them.

Huh...I didn't think Miyamoto was really the leadership type of guy, he seemed more the type to keep to himself and work behind the scenes.

I'm in serious shock, this feels like it's coming from nowhere...it's a sad day for gamers, the industry, everyone. He will no doubt be forever remembered for his contributions at Nintendo, he definitely left his mark.

Bless his family and friends as they deal with the loss.

It's like your favorite uncle that you only see at family gatherings is gone, or something like that. RIP Iwata. Your contribution and legacy won't ever be forgotten ;_;

This is the man that was a gamer at heart and sacrificed his own paycut for the sake of not getting other employees fired. There wasn't many other presidents like him who was so dedicated and passionate into bringing happiness to people who had played the games which he was involved in. He has made many mistakes, but deep down, he wanted everyone to have a smile on their face.

Rest in peace Satoru Iwata.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
What a shitty feeling to know that one of the last things he has done as CEO is to apologize for Nintendo's E3. The man must have worked over the last months knowing that he was going to die. He didn't deserve to pass away on that note. :-(

I legit thought it was a joke in VERY bad taste when a friend messaged me this news. Then I see this thread on NeoGAF :(

Very unexpected.

God damn it.

:(

This is horrible. What sad, sudden news. I thought we'd read that he was recovering from what ailed him. Awful.

RIP Iwata-san!

Could a kind GAFer help me edit these two together? I tried to make room for the ribbon to be placed in the bottom right corner. I'll never understand how to do transparency stuff... =\

Thanks ElTorro for the ribbon!!

Iwata was a man who truly cared about games and cared about the people who make games.

I've always loved this quote. On one hand, you can look at it like Iwata is a gushing Sakurai fanboy, which makes it really funny. On the other hand, this is an interview where Iwata just foregoes all formality and genuinely talks about how he admires a former coworker. It's really unusual in the best kind of way.

I owe you much, Mr. Iwata. You are responsible for many great recent Nintendo memories. I will personally miss you and fondly remember you and your contributions, and I look forward to Nintendo's future as I know you would want me to.

Rest in piece, my gamer friend.

Life time is limited no matter who you are. We don't last forever but what we've done won't go away and will stays someone's heart.

Can I please have a ribbon for my avatar?

Just saw the news. Shaking, feel like I'm going to cry...

The man was such a huge part of my life, year after year after year. I remember when my Grandmother passed during my law exams and my father was suffering from depression. The thing that got me through the two days of the funeral was looking forward to the E3 2005 conference, and all the joy, laughter and anticipation it would bring.

Nintendo is the only company I've ever had any emotional attachment to, and so much of that was down to the way Iwata ran things. I just... I just can't believe it. I'm just in complete denial.

Rest in peace Iwata, I can't imagine ever, ever seeing your like ever again.

Jesus I'm going to lie down, I can't handle this

Same feelings over here..

Judging by the press release, it looks like Genyo Takeda is now president of Nintendo. Wikipedia says that he joined Nintendo in 1972, and was promoted to his current position when the integrated research division was founded in 1981. He mostly works on improving hardware for home consoles and handhelds, but sometimes develops video games. In software development, he is notable for creating the Punch-Out!! and StarTropics franchises. He also created Nintendo's first arcade game, EVR Race, in 1975.

I disagreed with a lot of his business moves(some I felt being downright anti-consumer), but he was clearly a passionate and talented individual, and he'll be missed. I'd like to think he was hamstrung into doing things as a corporation that he didn't personally agree with, but we'll never know. He'll be missed.

Iwata Asks were always entertaining and enlightening, he asked meaningful questions.

It's pretty damn cool that even though I've never met the man, I feel like I've connected with him through the games I've played.

Shows how this little medium of ours transcends the physical. The love and care he put into his games reached me, just another average joe on the other side of the planet.

For that, Iwata, I thank you. Thanks for being a benevolent force in my favorite hobby, and thank you for being a friend to your employees and colleagues.
