Let's not crucify, Patcher.

Seems like an honest miscalculation. He was known for his harsh assessment of Iwata's decisions.

As Ninja Scooter said, it seems like he was trying to preempt criticism, but doing so made it worse.

I'd rather honor and remember Iwata.

Seconded. There's so much to honor about this guy (Iwata's) life

I always respected Iwata for having been a programmer and therefore knowing what game development is like and seeming to genuinely care about his employees and his fans.

This hit me harder than I expected it to. You will be missed, Mr. Iwata.

Absolutely devastated. I just feel awful. Condolences to his family and friends, to Nintendo, to the video game industry and everyone who enjoys the hobby. What a huge loss. Far, far too young. Rest in peace.

You'll will be missed dearly.

Maybe one day I will be able to thank you and Mr. Yamauchi in the afterlife.

Leave Luck to Heaven I guess... :_D

Out of all of the (incredible) tribute images so far, this has hit me the hardest. Nintendo games exist in brightest parts of human imagination - they push the buttons at the epicenter of fun, slide through our brains bringing a trail of creative whimsy in their wake. Seeing a picture of Kirby crying, or Mario with his head bowed still takes me to those vibrant worlds - a sadder continent to be sure, but in those vibrant worlds nonetheless.

This image, though... this is brick and stone. Metal and mortar. This is real. An actual human of finite longevity, of failing flesh and blood, will soon be laid to rest. Another incarnation of the man can't be programmed, another Iwata asks can never be held, and another direct with him will never be filmed.

Iwata's final credits are here, the closing coda on one of the most genuine and beloved characters the game of life ever programmed. Sure, we can replay Iwata's greatest moments, but we'll never get another new level.

So thank you, Satoru Iwata. Thank you for your integrity, thank you for your prowess, and most of all - thank you for leading us through the few bright spots Earth still has to offer. </3

This got water into my eye. Man, I'm gonna miss him.

Totally agree. With all the bad things in the world like ISIS and poverty and abuse, it makes you really appreciate the real good parts of humanity like imagination, kindness and joy that Mr. Iwata brought all the more. You appreciate the humans behind the businesses.

When asked about why he refused to layoff anyone at the company:

"I sincerely doubt employees who fear that they may be laid off will be able to develop software titles that could impress people around the world"

What a guy.

This, while Nintendo was in decline, was one of the most impressive things I've seen Iwata do. They couldn't avoid the NOE restructuring in the years that followed, sadly, but he and other Nintendo execs took pay cuts in 2011 and 2014 in response to the company's performance.

Damn really did not expect this news. Sad sad day for the industry and all gamers as we truly have lost an incredible leader and a fantastic man. RIP :(

I'll take a ribbon please if someone could hook me up with that I'd greatly appreciate it,

Still thinking about this, and I'm really sad. Mr. Iwata was a truly genuine person, who had compassion and heart that you don't see a lot of in executive leadership roles. He played an influential role in the gaming industry for decades, and I respect that so much.

RIP to a true legend. Thank you for bringing games that emphasized "fun" right until the end.

Read the news at work and felt like I got punched in the gut. :(

Iwata was great (Balloon Fight is my favorite NES game) and I loved him as the "face" of Nintendo. What a tragic loss. RIP, man.

Well said. He will be missed and remembered fondly through the years. The best part is that we were all around to experience his connection to the world first hand.

I thought it right to take some time before posting, as to better compose my thoughts.

Mr. Iwata has for a long time been a shining example of the kinds of people Nintendo tries to foster, those whose passion dares them to take a different path, for good or ill, into the unknown in pursuit of something new. I hope his legacy continues to not only inspire developers at Nintendo but also many around the world to never be afraid of blazing a new path and delivering, above all, some fun in the lives of all.
