This is NOT the news I wanted to read when I woke up.

I am pretty shocked right now.
I think Iwata did a great job as Nintendo's President, even if many others don't agree.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Iwata. Nintendo will probably never be the same without you.

Welp ;-;

What also is bothering me is Iwata's passion for QoL. People have mocked it so much, but I think Iwata knew his time was coming. He really wanted to help and expand to making quality of life a popular thing to care about. Just the words Quality of Life in reference to Iwata is making me sad...

Your avatar is pretty dark and my photoshop skills are actually pretty weak, so this is all I have. I think there was another ribbon posted in here with a white edge, but its buried pretty far back and I can't find it right now. Sorry! If I can find the alternate ribbon, I'll give it another go.

Awesome, thanks.

What's so depressing about this for me is that Iwata was pretty much a living, breathing representation of everything Nintendo stood for as a company.

Thinking back to the Wii and DS eras, both were created because Iwata wanted to create brand new experiences for players that they hadn't experienced before in the face of the growing hardware arms race that he felt wasn't actually doing anything to further the experiences players could have. Whether or not they ended up being what some players wanted (and there certainly were some people who didn't like Nintendo's direction at the time), they became what they were because Iwata wanted to do what he thought was best for games and the people who play them.

Lord knows Iwata and Nintendo could be frustrating in their stubbornness and their inability or refusal to adapt to certain trends. But everything Iwata was about, creating fun games and worlds, developing new experiences for players, and just in general having the time of their lives making whatever they were making, was everything Nintendo was about, and the philosophy that's made so many of my best memories growing up, and have continued to give me countless hours of joy up until this day. And now that he's gone, for the first time, I'm wondering if they're ever going to be quite the same again.

RIP iwata. The industry was better for having you in it.

Magnificent post, nailed it.

He was Nintendo through and through, and I make no apologies for believing that Nintendo embody the best that video games, and entertainment at large, can be.

Hard to believe that Iwata's fingerprints can be traced back to games I played nearly two decades ago.

I might not have know who he was then, but I sure do now.

I like to think he's now just playing video games, somewhere. :)

Fuck cancer. My uncle died on the 4th and my cousin is starting treatment tomorrow for it. Such a devastating illness.

RIP Satoru Iwata, you were truly one of a kind and you will be missed.

If someone could PM me a ribbon so I could show my respects, I would greatly appreciate it.

So many decisions seem so clear in hindsight, especially with respect to QoL. I feel heartbroken. I can't even sleep.

That would break the poor man's heart more than it probably already is...

I wonder what will happen now, with Iwata's desire for Sakurai to take over EAD Tokyo.

I read this before, and this wasn't the actual story. Iwata wanted Sakurai to base his development in the EAD Tokyo office, not "take over it".

Actually the networking team at Nintendo's Tokyo Branch was involved in the last three Smash Bros.

Honestly, I expect Sakurai to cut ties with Nintendo and maybe game development after Smash DLC is done. Everything from 2007 on has been Iwata believing that his friend is one of the best designers in the world and doing his best to ensure he has somewhere to express his creative designs.

With everything that has happened with his stress and his health, I think Sakurai might think it best to work as a consultant from here on out.

I wondered if he wouldn't take it up out of respect and to honor a good friend. :(

Wouldn't he effectively be an overseer as head of EADT? Certainly not in charge of anything with direct programming to work himself to death over like with Smash.

Ahh okay then I had misheard.

I do hope that Sakurai does stick around with Nintendo to make more beautiful games...

This is emboldened by the fact that he was doing Iwata Asks right up until a few weeks ago. He genuinely cared about making people happy through entertainment, and was a great face for Nintendo.

Thank you for everything, Iwata!! You've left behind a great legacy, and I know Nintendo will continue to bring smiles to people's faces for many more years.

I was thinking exactly this.

It's a horrible loss with terrifying implications.

People say "end of an era" jokingly a lot but...

It's the end of an era. Wow.

Yea cancer sucks total ass. My dad died of lung cancer. I've had several family members have it. We really need to eradicate this damn disease. It just takes too many people and takes so many way too early.

No way, he was the CEO that had the most passion for gaming of them all, he will be deeply missed, what a huge heartbreak.
I feel so sorry to his family, friends and co workers.

What a great man, May he rest in peace.

And Iwata passes nearly on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the NES in America which will be this fall (October I believe).

Yeah it didn't hit me that he was still working till the end.

He will be missed :c

Shit.

Obviously, what a blow to our hobby. This is a man responsible for creating so many smiles over the years, from you, from me, from the collective world.

I've been out of the loop for a while, I wasn't aware he'd been suffering with cancer. All the best to his friends and loved ones.

His legacy will live on long past any of us do, and that means more than anything. He'll always be around.
