Morimoto is a candidate. Same type of roots as Iwata (just from GameFreak, rather than HAL). And he took over the Japanese directs, so he's been working closely with Iwata as of recent and I don't doubt Iwata had the foresight to plan out his succession given his health.

Agreed. Morimoto has sort of seemed like Iwata's protege of late. When he introduced Morimoto as taking over the Directs from time to time, alarm bells did ring in my head :/

So long Iwata. Thanks for the memories.

Thank you HUELEN, the perfect tribute. Quoting in hopes that it will bring a smile to someone else like it just did for me.

I wasn't sure if that basement photo was really from HUELEN so I waited until someone who knew better came around.

Thank you HUELEN. mariachi is right, there's basically no better tribute than this.

I in tears again.;( *SOB*

This passing away really hurts me deeply. Nintendo has a special place in my heart, being such a huge part of my childhood. Even nowadays when I have been a bit more annoyed with them, I still respect and love them in many ways.

This is a tragedy, but Iwata would not want us to mourn. I believe he just wanted gamers to love Nintendo. I think he loved the company and the fans. I am grateful for him and for all that the company has done. I believe they keep our best interests in mind more than we know, even with cultural divides and marketing and money involved. It was all about the games. Thank you, Iwata.

So was Iwata. Better someone whose games are their life be in charge.

Iwata was one too.

No I meant I knew Iwata was a designer, but I was just wondering if Miyamoto had any business background.

Reggie is a PR mouthpiece for NOA. He has little to do with any decisions made about the company.

My guess would be Genyo Takeda. He and Miyamoto are temporary managing directors, and I don't think Miyamoto would want the CEO position.

Kinda sad. Reggie is one of the most prominent black members of the video game community and I would love to have seen him elevate to that next step.

In an industry where death threats and angry cynical discourse are so commonplace, Iwata somehow managed to cut through all the cynicism and maintained a fun, likeable, public persona right until the very end. That's what I'll remember him for most, a legacy I hope his successor continues.

I've been off the Internet pretty much all day and I see this... WTF.

May he RIP. I hope he gets a very nice tribute at TGS and any other gaming shows for the next year or so.

RIP Mr. Iwata. I always liked how he , the president of a company, would be present in nintendo directs. He'd usually say something along the line of, "...hope you find our games enjoyable". Somehow gave off a good vibe to me. Don't really get presidents of companies addressing gamers unless it's E3.

WHAT.

I just learned about this. Terrible news, I thought he was recovering. Thank you very much for all your leadership years, Mr. Iwata.
This is just so unexpected, and so young. Damn.

You're right, and we'll probably each never go a day without either playing a Nintendo game and thinking about Iwata, or at least there being some significant memories forever attached to his legacy.

Now is a good time to mourn, whether he'd like it or not, because he'd know that all of us will just love his work and smile again soon enough.

I'd rather he stuck by his original tweet instead of coming back like this because some people can't understand that not everyone agrees with how people do things with their lives while they are still alive. With that being said, I am quite curious as to who will be put in Iwata's place. I would say Reggie, but I honestly think Nintendo wouldn't be down with having an American run the company.

whoever gets me my fucking Metroid console game should run the company
i wonder how they should immortalize him
NPC in Splatoon or some other game?

How old is Takeda?

Age is somewhat of an elephant in the room for Miyamoto. His getting older is the entire reason he has been scaling back and letting fresh blood have a larger role. He's not going to live forever, although I didn't think he would outlive Iwata in this way :(

One of the best dudes in the entire industry hands down. Even my kids thought he was awesome in all the Nintendo Directs they watched. They too are sad tonight at his passing. He will be sorely missed. RIP and thank you Mr. Iwata.

He was such an inspiring man in so many ways. His genuine love and passion was infectious and his vision for his company and his industry was and is one I have so much respect for. I have a truly deep sense of loss. I don't think I can put the way I feel into words except that my world will forever be a little darker from today.

Thank you Satoru Iwata. I'm so happy to have been able to witness your beautiful life.

Well I was suspicious when he introduced Morimoto and let him do the last Direct.

Yeah, Iwata probably knew for a while he'd die from it / it was back in case the doctors thought they'd defeated it. Afterall the outlook for this specific form of cancer is devastating. I just wanted to say that as far as I know, we do not know if Iwata "lied" regarding his treatment, because oh so many times doctors think they have likely beaten the cancer and it still manages to come back with full force.

Can we have one day, just one day where we don't have people justifying this drive-by crap?

This man died far too young and if your first reaction is to use that as a jumping-off point to get on a soapbox about Nintendo perhaps you could just keep that to yourself.

Oh please, you're reaching. He wasn't using his death as a jumping off point. It was more of a 'even though I've disagreed with him, he will be missed'.

Is it true Iwata debugged all of Smash Bros Melee just so it could hit the gamecube's launch window?

The man was a coding legend. He recoded Pokémon Gold & Silver to allow for Kanto to be in it and unless I'm mistaken he recoded the entire Pokémon battle system in a day for Pokémon Stadium

Cross post from Iwata Memories thread:

I didn't make the original photoshop, but i did make the It Prints Money gif way back in 2006.

I never seriously thought (pretty much anyone at Nintendo) would be the kind of person to be swimming around in a pit of money, much less Iwata.

The only reason something like this gets created is because i'm here, because of them, because i'm grateful for the enjoyment they bought and continue to bring. When you realise that their reach extends far beyond the actual games themselves, you understand what kind of an impact they have on the lives of people

I'm sure he would have seen it and hope it bought a smile to his face, knowing it stood for how much we're all indebted to his and Nintendo's efforts. A great man who will be missed by all, rest in peace.

I wonder how long they have known, it was in 2013 but perhaps Tatsumi Kimishima coming across from NoA was foreshadowing.

This is just so sudden, and so, so sad.
岩田さん、ご冥福をお祈り致します。

May I have a ribbon, too, please? My previous request went unnoticed.

Guys, the NX is likely the last Nintendo hardware to have Iwata's input on him... Sort of like a last dream, if you will :(

I really don't think anyone has used it as a soapbox, but please, by all means, keep making things up.

It's really obvious what those kinds of comments mean: "Even though I've disagreed with this man, often very publicly and very loudly, I recognize what a big figure he was (you should too) and mourn his death."
Oh please, you're reaching. He wasn't using his death as a jumping off point. It was more of a 'even though I've disagreed with him, he will be missed'.
Precisely.
